horsepire, I've read a fair number of EU books, but mostly from post Return of the Jedi. More specifically from the Thrawn trilogy onward. For that reason my experience with Rebellion capital ships stemmed mostly from the original trilogy and Star Wars: Rebellion. I had no idea that most of the rebel ships were completely made up for Rebellion and not used elsewhere.
What other ships from the EU did the rebellion use during the same time period as the original trilogy? (I know they used a lot of stolen empire ships, but I hate the idea of the same ship being released for both factions in this game)
Well, my background is pretty much the same in terms of books, though I also played pretty much all of the video games up through X-Wing Alliance.
These are, from what I can recall, all the ships we see the Rebels use in the OT: Mon Cal (multiple versions), Nebulon B, CR90, GR-75...and that's it.
So there's definitely a problem here - the Rebels don't have that many instantly recognizable capital ships. Moreover, they don't have any BIG capital ships, like, ships that could take on a Star Destroyer one on one.
Rebellion and other games recognized that this was a problem, and it's still kind of a problem. I just don't agree with the way Rebellion in particular tried to solve the problem.
If it were up to me (it isn't, at all), this is what I'd propose for the Rebel line:
- MC80 Mon Cal Cruiser/Home One
- MC40 Mon Cal Light Cruiser
- Assault Frigate
- Nebulon B Frigate
- Some kind of escort carrier?
- CR90 (Corellian Corvette)
- DP20 (Corellian Gunship)
- GR-75?
That's 8 ships. For the Empire, I'd have the ISD and VSD, dreadnaught, Nebulon 2, Vindicator/Interdictor, and Lancer/Carrack.
That's a start. But you'd definitely want to expand both lines. The Imperials would be easy, but the Rebels? I dunno.
Honestly I don't have any attachment at all to the ships in Rebellion so if FFG wanted to design an entirely new capital ship I could get on board with it, so long as it was good looking and was uniquely Rebelly.
