Win on a error

By markcsoul, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Had a game on vassal last night that for about 95% of the game was in my opponent's favor, until the last two attack rounds in the game switched it to my favor because of some errors on my opponent's part.

My Squad:

Boba + HLC + Predator

Kath + HLC + Predator + Rebel Captive

Opponent's Squad:

Corran + PTL + FCS + R2

Red Squadron

Bandit Squadron X 3

He setup all his ships in his left side corner where the most asteroids were. Because of this I was debating jousting vs having him try to fly through the asteroids to get at me since they were so heavily by him.

I chose to do the latter which almost cost me the game. After a few rounds of moving the only shots available were corran against kath at range 3 through a rock. He got 2 hits that I evaded, I got 4 hits that gave him 1 damage.

But now I was at the point that nearly (and probably should have) cost me the game. Boba was in a decent position, however Kath was really close to a rock and had very few moves that wouldn't be on the asteroid or go through it. I finally elected to do a 3 right turn so I could at least have a shot at someone.

My turn did go through the rock and I took a damage for it. I had a shot on one of his bandits, but also had all of his other ships having shots at kath, including corran having a range 1 blindside shot.

I was able to 1 shot his bandit before it fired thanks to predator's 2 rerolls even though I didn't have a focus which was huge (he had taken target lock so no focus for defense). Also Boba gave his corran 2 more hits to be down to 2 hull. All of his ships fired on Kath, and Corran took his second shot, which left kath down to 1 hull.

The next couple rounds saw me take down another bandit and do some damage to his Red, but Kath was finished off and Boba was hurting.

Near the end of the game it was down to my Boba at 5 hull vs his Corran at 2 hull, Red at 2 hull, and full health bandit.

I did a nice move where I had a range 1 butt shot on the red while bandit was at range 2 of me and corran didn't have a shot. I finished off the red and only took 1 damage from the bandit.

Now comes the last two rounds of the game that decided it. On my next move I did a 4k that my opponent wasn't expecting. He had corran out of firing range, and his bandit had gone the opposite way. In an exact mirror of what happened early in the game, I got 4 hits using predator without focus, and he had taken a target lock so no focus on defense and I 1-shotted another Bandit.

On the final round of the game I went 1 forward to clear stress and get ready for the last round of shooting most likely. However my opponent made a critical error when his 2 bank landed him on the edge of an asteroid to have no shot, no action, and also took a crit to add insult to injury. I easily finished him off with my shot.

So even though I made a bad deployment choice early in the game, and exposed Kath to way too much focused fire. thanks to some key attacks on his ships and a late error I was able to get the win.

Very nice clear write up, bless those tricksey asteroids, they make or brake many a game!

So I must be on a streak right now, as I just won another game last night on vassal that also ended on a error.

In this instance, I was down to Wedge with 2 hull, and my opponent was down to Soontir with 2 hull. I moved first and did a 4k turn. Soontir then did a 2 turn towards me. He was in my firing arc which he didn't want, so he tried to squeeze in a barrel roll to the left and just made it off the board.

He thought if he couldn't make it he didn't have to, but someone pointed out that the rules say if you try to barrel roll and go off the board, then you are dead, no do overs.

For fun we had him stay where he was and play out the attacks, and he ended up killing me, so if not for his barrel roll error I would have lost, but instead got a lucky win again.
