The Covenant of Twelve

By SaraMcDohl, in Game Masters

So I have all these old adventure seeds and whatnot, and one of them is in a setting with an Emir and a bunch of animals that can take human form. So I had an idea of taking that concept and applying it to a bunch of Sith peoples! Here's what I got so far:

Ram [Aries] - Krios

Bull [Taurus] - Tavros,

Twins [Gemini] - Mischief and Anarchy

Crab [Cancer] - Karkinos,

Lion [Leo] - Leon,

Maiden [Virgo] - Parthenos,

Scales [Libra] - Zygos,

Scorpion [scorpio] - Tula,

Archer [sagittarius] - Nedu,

Goat [Capricorn] - Caleb

Water Bearer [Aquarius] - Ismena

Fish [Pisces] - Nerissa,

Serpentarius - The Main Leader guy.

Now my problem is, finding things for them to use these "Transformation" Talismans into. Obviously I can use stuff like the Greater Krayt Dragon that was designed on the Beta form, etc. But I wanted your thoughts! I also need some sort of adornment for them, like a pair of rings with the gemstone..or a necklace, head dress, etc.

A bit of Legacy history here, talismans of transformation are a Dathomirian thing. They have a few of them, and the Queen of Endor stole the one of the Raven long ago.

well I created my first encounter with one of the Twelve.. Not a lot of feeback from here, but thats ok. Here was my first member:

Aries

5, 5, 4, 3, 3, 3

12 Soak, 40 Wound, 30 Strain, 2/2 Defense

Ranged 4, Gunnery 4, Melee 4, Vig 3, Adversary 3, Barrage 3, Point Blank 3

Heavy Repeating Blaster

15, 2, L, Auto-Fire, Pierce 2, Vicious 1

Ilum Crystal Lightsaber

10. 1, Vicious 2

This Nemesis has two initiative slots.

He has an entourage of 3 Assassin Droids [based out of the AoR CRB, but its probably the same as the EOTE one]

They only have the Light Repeating Blasters and built in melee weapon though. No missle tubes.

What do the Covenant of Twelve do? What sort of plots are they into? Is there a bunch of infighting among them, or do they truly get along and work together? Is each one responsible for some specific plot or geographical area, or do they run their business more like a committee?

Do the talismans transform the owners into creatures? I think masks would be cool for this sort of thing, but masks are horribly overplayed. Of course, that doesn't particularly matter; if you like masks, then they are masks.

I've always liked themed villains and groups of villains. The Zodiac theme is always a favorite.

Basically each of the members operates on their own, lead by "Serpentarious" the 13th Zodiac. In my particular game, the players decided they wanted to look for the Foundry from TOR. I tried to reason with them that it was destroyed, etc. They continued to look, so I build a new one...for fun, and I put Aries to the task of operating it. Aries wore a ring with a blue stone. Inside the stone was the astrological sign for Aries. His ring gives it's user Adversary +1, but any Force Sensitive hears the whispers calling them from it. Telling them how it can give them power, make them better. In truth, when the force sensitive goes to make an interaction with some sort of morality to it, it pushes them to choose the darker side of things.

Nice. Alright, you've got a little Lord of the Rings thing going on. That's cool. Twelve evil, Sith rings forever dominating the destinies of their wearers.

It's good stuff, and I like it.

Given just this information, I might build on it some thusly... The rings seek out light side Force users, especially Jedi. Perhaps the current 12 are former Jedi who have been corrupted by the ancient influence of the rings. As the PCs meet (and beat) them, they could find out their real names and, with some research, discover they were once good beings who fought for justice and peace in the galaxy. The research could even give them some insight on how to beat the others. Of course, once one of them is beaten, the ring starts calling out to the minds of its new owners, whispering of power and lust and wealth, or of adventure and excitement. But the rings always seek out light side Force users. Once it finds one, it manipulates its wearer to ensure the ring ends up in the hands of that individual. They're subtle too, most of them.

The 13th, Serpentarius, was an ancient Sith artificer who created the rings using Dathomiri rituals and magic. (You mentioned the Dathomir in your first post.) Now the Lord only exists as a Sith holocron, well hidden, but active, and very subtly directing the ring wearers to his bidding.

The rings themselves, and not all of them need to be rings per se, have very interesting stones set in them. The stones are Kyber crystals, twisted with evil to be sure. They would make very interesting and highly unique lightsabers...

As merely a creative suggestion, maybe modify the Zodiac idea a little bit. Use Star Wars creatures. One of them is The Rancor. Another The Wampa. Nexu, gundarks, that buggy mantis critter from Attack of the Clones... You get the idea. That might be what I would do if I were to, you know, steal this idea for my own game.

I like where this is going. I've never run a fantasy-based Star Wars game, but this might convince me to.

I was orgiinally going to use the Rancor, Wampa, etc. But the Dathomirian Talismans of Transformation were all named after various species on that planet..so I didn't want to just straight up use the names. You are correct in not all of the artifacts are rings. In fact the ones I have planned for Gemini are like the DBZ Fusion earrings, without the fusion part. The twins each wear 1 half of the pair. I think Leo should wear a circlet of some kind as well, but as I'm introducing them in order, I need to figure out Taurus next~

So what happened at the new Foundry place? How did the research and such unfold? Or did they perhaps just receive the information and made their way there? Was Krios (the Aries guy) and the three assassin droids the only opposition? Did Krios know they were coming? Aside from the ring, a lightsaber, and some blasters, what was the loot?

You are having the PCs encounter these guys in a particular order. Is there an over-arcing story involved, or is it more just a series of encounters?

I can't get the image of Taurus having a nose ring out of my head.

RLogue, oh I wasn't sure people actually wanted to know what happened. So the party went through the path of Revan, finding all of the star maps which normally would lead to the Star Forge, but as we know that was destroyed, so I had them changed to this location. :D Anyway, they had to go to each planet, finding pieces. It all started because one of the party members, my "Kill-bot" player, never designated his make / model. So I came up to him with the idea that his make / model was created by 'The Foundry' and he was cast out as a malfunction. After all their little adventures on the various planets. [Tatooine, Kashyyk, Korriban (now known as Moraband), Manaan, and Dantooine.] They found themselves with coordinates to a spot in dark space. They're arrival was met with some opposition from the station itself, as it attacked their ships, and tractor beamed them into the station. They met with 6 of the Assassin droids. [They're stat line is actually modded to be 4, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1]

After this a hologram of a man in a robe with a mask appeared, and began to talk to them, while talking down to the malfunction [Now designated HN-XX by the Master] They wandered through the halls and the assembly area where they found 8 more of these superior droids, as well as more berating from The Master of the Foundry. After that fight, they had to slice through a door to find it led to what they saw as open space, but in fact was a clear dome protecting them from the vacuum of space. While crossing this area, they came across 3 Ackley's [stat line 6, 3, 1, 3, 3, 1. 12 Soak, 25 W, 15 S, 2/1]. Finally they found the Master of the Foundry, who after some taunting and devestating attacks, was taken down.

Amongst the loot they found was the equipment drops, about 10,000 credits on Aries himself, as well as a data pad with letters from "Serpentarious". The first being his orders to Aries to claim the Foundry, the second was a more recent letter asking for a progress report.

And that was the story. At least a very simplified version of it. There was a lot of fluff and stuff that happened along the way. Most of it was off the cuff writing on my part.

Very nice. Knowing what happened helps put the villains into context.

Now about this Taurus fellow.....

That is what I need to work on next. The Twins, I changed from being Didy and Moi to being my two GM characters who were in fact twins. Mostly they were the liaisons for the Hutt I created as their adopted father. Kimee [Kimberly] and Ellie [Elizabeth] were force sensitive healers. Kimee was actually a Medic from the AoR book, and Ellie was a Doctor from the EotE book, as none of my players wished to play the healer role. They were kidnapped by Cipher Agent Tau, and taken to meet with Ysanne Isard, who was early in her career as a specialist in creating sleeper agents, however, she used an experimental treatment on the two and twisted their memories of everything that happened so far into the players attacking them, killing their father instead of Teemo the Hutt, etc. In another post I made about a very strong adversary is a picture of them as sith ladies. [ http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/111764-help-with-major-nemesis/ ] Now I have changed them since this post as with the release of Force and Destiny, but my players will soon know the wrath of Mischief and Anarchy. :D

So here are some new additions to my thoughts:

We know of the Ring of Aries, which member #1 was carrying. I decided it should give Adversary +1, as well as call to any force user as a way of corrupting them.

Next is The Taurus Bracer, currently I have the idea to make it give Defense +2 [General Defense for M / R]

I have the Circlet of Leo planned, The Earrings of the Twins, and the Necklace of the Maiden. As for what they do, I haven't gotten that far.

Thoughts and opinions on the items are appreciated.

Also each of these objects pulls you to do things that would cause conflict, and not be very moral.

It sounds like your players are going to be juiced up when all of this is through. Have you given thought to how powerful they will eventually be?

The problem is my players have all decided to create characters that have a 5 in any 1 statistic, for instance my Kill-bot player with a 6 in Agility now, and throws 6Y 3B against 3P on normal enemies unless I of course give the enemies Adversary. So I have yet to have a 'normal' player that isn't exactly OP as all heck. I literally have to buff EVERY enemy since the inception of this game in order to even make any form of Challenge. Giving them any extra bonuses? It's moot at this point. A trandoshan enforcer with 3 ranks of fearsome and intimidate, 5 brawn and a weapon that does 11 pierce 5 on a single hit.

Yeesh. I do not envy you. I can see why you would want to give the NPCs some better equipment.

Ok so Taurus is this at the moment!

Taurus - Herglic Sith Lord dude

Brawn: 5

Agility: 3

Intellect: 3

Cunning: 5

Willpower: 4

Presence: 4

Soak 12

Wounds 40

Strain 30

Defense 5/5

Adversary 3

Fearsome 4 [2R 2P]

(Maybe some other skills here, like Discipline or Cool, etc)

"Force Shield" - Blocks Blaster damage [Once defeated, shield crumbles and becomes useless]

Force Move - Able to disarm opponents.

Weapon: I dunno yet. Something awesome.

Bracer of Taurus: Adds +2 Defense [Melee and Ranged]

Whatcha think?

Hmm.. the shield breaking after defeat would be more plausible if it happened gradually throughout the fight, otherwise it makes it more obvious that the players aren't intended to have it. Doing it the other way is more digestible.

The shield is actually held together by a focus crystal that is powered by Taurus' Force ability. Without him to sustain it, it crumbles to dust.

Ah. that makes sense. Sounds pretty vicious, but your group also sounds formidable, so I wouldn't worry about him being overpowered.

Ok so I still haven't figured out which weapon to give Taurus, but here we go with the Gemini twins. These characters are actually my GM PCs, which were there to help the players and be their Point of Contact with the Hutt I created named Morella. They were kidnapped by the Imperials and Ms. Izard had her way with their brains turning them into psychotic sith ladies.

Also side note, I do not know how you are supposed to do the Lightsaber skill, however I base it off of Force Rating. So Brawn [or whatever skill you use for lightsaber due to the new book] is your base ability score in it, and your FR is your Proficiency. I think it keeps Lightsaber users at a good pace, and not be COMPLETELY OP as Lightsabers can tend to be.

Please use them as you see fit, if you wish to have a very powerful group of enemies.

EDIT: WHOOPS! Something messed up with the program, Taurus is only supposed to be 5 / 5. I added a bit too much there. XD
