Huge ships for the Empire?

By whafrog, in X-Wing Rules Questions

newb alert....

Since there are no iconically Imperial Huge ships available, can an Imperial player use the freighter and/or corvette in epic play?

Officially? No, the ship cards all say "Rebel Only" on them.

For friendly games, sure no reason why not. The Empire did use the CR-90 after all. Just have to ignore the "rebel only" part.

I'm curious then...is nobody playing Epic play yet with these? Or maybe a better question is, how does the game balance out if one side has Huge ships and the other doesn't?

It currently doesn't. It was the one big mistake FFG made when they went Epic. They only released ships for one faction.

I think they're trying to address the balance with Armada. But there has been endless requests for an epic Imperial ship.

Thanks for the info. Seems kind of weird, they might have come up with a way to balance it with points. Ah well, the models look good on my shelf :-/

Many are guessing that FFG will announce some kind of Imperial Epic ship at GenCon this coming weekend. Maybe. Maybe not. But we'll all find out in a few days.

Oooh, the anticip............ ation.

I would love to see a Star Destroyer, but with the announcement of Armada I fear that it will never come to fruition. As an Imperial player, I just want something to help balance the Epic matches.

A star destroyer would be too large to slide the scale down, remember the Tantive IV fit inside the ISD, and even a VSD like what comes in Armada, would be too large to be playable..

In most cases if I find the imperial just engulfs the rebels with ships and firepower.

At least my opponents are coming at me with a few ships with hlc and missles along with tie swarms and squints.

The Tantive costing so much to field leaving me with very few escort ships that u find it very hard to win

In all honesty it seems like it would be better to just not user the Tantive at all and put in more small ships.

Which is why I started a thread a few days ago asking that once imperials get theirs they should update the tournament ruling to say epic Game each side most include one huge ship.

I think with the cost and firepower of the imperial ship that it'll even the score

People are playing epic but just one side had the huge ships.

Thanks, I guess I'm still not understanding this part. The Epic play rules say the Tantive costs 3 Epic Points, which seems to have no impact on the squad costs. So if the Imperials can't field Epic ships, how do they overpower when the squad point costs are the same? Or is there some rule I'm missing that converts Epic Points to squad points?

Forget the Epic points. A naked Corvette costs 90 Squad points and you probably want some upgrades on it, so you're looking at only around 200 points tops for other ships.

The Imperial player can come at the corvette with everything he's got, and conceivably take it out before it gets much chance to do anything, leaving the Rebel player at a huge deficit.

I believe this is why the huge ships got buffed in the recent rules changes. To strengthen them a bit in the early rounds.

The Epic points are so that you don't face two Tantives or a swarm of GR-75 transports. It is meant to limit the number of Huge ships in play when squad building.

Once the Imperial ships are revealed, squad building with Epic points will make more sense than it does now.

Ah, the huge ship costs also come out of the squad pool, got it, thanks.

Yes, and when I field the Tantive it costs about 120 points.

Leaving me 180 roughly for escorts.

So when the imperial player had 300 worth of small and large ships you really feel outgunned.

The first few rounds the Tantive is great but keeping the weapons firing with full energy is tough one it starts taking fire and the few escorts you have try to take on a massive swarm.

Can't wait to see what imperials get for huge ships.

It was suggested the CR90 can be used by Imperial players in casual play.

There are some very good looking Imperial cards for the CR90 here.
