A-Wings with Lone Wolf

By kryzak, in X-Wing

Thanks for the good discussion on Lone Wolf on Phantoms so far (in the other thread), but the other obvious ship to have Lone Wolf (besides maybe the Defender and Advanced, since Interceptors almost always needs PtL) is the A-Wing.

Now with all A-wings having EPT (with the title) or TWO EPT (for elite pilots like Tycho and Jake), I'm thinking Lone Wolf will totally make the A-Wing a great ship to fly as a flanker.

Imagine (these are SEPARATE builds, not all in the same list since LW is a unique :P)

Tycho with PTL+Lone Wolf => crazy actions/flanking and amazing turtling with respectable attack. All for 1 pt less than predator (and 6 pts less than predator+flight instructor, if the A-wing were able to take crew), as long as you keep R2+ away from your friends (which shouldn't be too hard)

OR

Green + Title + Lone Wolf => for 19 points (assuming you took the refit for -2), you now have a predator-esque A-Wing with more survivability, again for 1 point cheaper.

OR

Jake + PTL + Lone Wolf => 3 actions a turn (focus, boost/BR, one other action) and a built in limited predator/flight instructor, you can have a Focus/mini-TL/evade/BR-Boost/mini-FI ship all for 29 points.

What do you all think? What are some other cool combos on individual A-Wings?

I'm also pretty excited about LW, but I'm not sure how much it could be used within one list. Remember each of your LW ships has to stay outside range 2 of all other friendly ships for this to work. That could be pretty restricting if you have three ships a;; operating this way. I would do some tests in vassal or on the table just to see what the interval you need to keep looks like. Even if you had them in position for the first engagement it might be really tough to keep them at good intervals for the subsequent turns.

I think it's best used on outflankers, and maybe for double YT type lists.

First of all, it's unique. So, you should run a single flanker with LW along with a formation of other ships to maintain focus fire.

Ooh, nice catch. So yeah, not only hard to make this work, but also illegal! Sorry Kryzak, looks like this squad is DOA

Not sure why you'd push for PtL, though. With Predator + Lone Wolf, you're re-rolling up to 2 of your 2 attack dice (IE., basically getting a free 'target lock'...only you don't need to declare a target, and it doesn't take an action) ALL the time, and up to 3 dice for low-talent captains (so the folks you got a range-1 drop on). No stress to manage, then, either, or actions to worry about...you are just always getting those re-rolls.

Actually, I meant to list that as 3 separate combos with A-Wings, not all together. Ninja-ing it to be more clear. Thanks for pointing out the confusion! :)

I don't think I would want to put Predator along with Lone Wolf, since *most* of the time you only need to reroll one dice, so Predator is wasted or Lone Wolf is only there to do defense die re-rolling. I mean, it's definitely viable if you *really* want to make sure you have a TL every turn plus a defense. The reason for PTL is not always for TL+Focus, but also Boost+Evade and other options. This way, LW handles the partial TL, so you can always choose focus+boost or focus+evade (for even more survivability).

I really love flankers, so I really like Lone Wolf. A-Wings are my favorite Rebel ship. I can't wait to start flying more of them with all their shiny new toys!!

Yeah, this will make me want to fly Rebels more. :)

Yeah I was thinking of using green squadron+chardaan refit+outmaneuver+lone wolf. Already have 2 possible lists planned, 22 points for a flanker with those abilities will be totally worth it. Except against Decimator possibly...

I like the idea of Lone Wolf + Outmaneuver on an A-wing, maybe even Opportunist on a green A-wing.
