A Discussion about He Who Must Not Be Named....

By Saldre, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello All!

So I was sitting here at Work during my break, deathly bored, when i decided to type out this (relative) plea. It pertains to one Outer God in particular, H*st*r. (censored to preserve my good fortune.)

I'd post his card myself, but well, I cant do that from work.

The idea is simple: Out of all of the Ancient Ones or Great Old Ones that the game has to offer, I dont think a single one is (Fortunatly) as (Unfortunatly) badly designed as the unspeakable one.

Why do you say? Well, here are my thoughts. Even tough his worshipper ability brings the cultists to the sky and keeps them relatively out of harms way, which allows for the monster limit to be hit, his slumbering ability is completely counter productive. Infact, it encourage closing gates, instead of waiting to get clue tokens (and risk monster surges) in order to seal them. The fact that he starts off with a modifier based on the terror level is cool, unfortunatly is not nearly hard enough for him to be worth anyone's while because most people rush to have him wake up and destroy him while it is still low.

The New Expansion, the King in Yellow, introduces the Herald with the same name. (Coolest herald in my opinion). And even though the expansion itself causes the terror trick to spin out of control rather quickly, the Herald only refocuses that energy into waking up his master -even faster-, by giving us a choice of where to invest the Yellow Sign tokens.

I think, in light of this new *Official* Expansion, and the matching Herald, a rework of you know who is in Order. Even though there are a couple of Reworks of our favorite Feaster from Afar in the Fan's section (Which I Visit, contribute too and even use in my sessions), I think there needs to be an official rework of the guy for those people who are a bit stingier then me when it comes to using Home Brewed Material. I got the impression that not a lot of people visit the Custom's section for that reason.

So what do you guys think about about Hastur? Is there another AO that suffers so from it's own abilities? I think reworking him to match up with his Herald would be cool, and with new rules from new expansions better matching abilities can be made up.

For example, his worshippers can be members of the elusive cult of the Yellow sign (Giving Cultists the eluvise ability) which would make them even stronger at raising up that monster limit. While his slumbering Ability could involve anything as simple as throwing a die to raise the terror level every time he gains a clue token.

That actually gives me an idea, which I will post in the Custom's section later. Though this is mostly for those people who dont visit there, and what they tihnk about AOs who have suffering similair treatment.

Ps: Darn, i said it didnt i? that explains why my break ended five minutes ago...
