Supporting the Shuttle with Wingman

By Siddhi, in X-Wing

I've been to a tournament this weekend and tested a new squad there which turned out pretty well. Especially the combination of a Shuttle and the Wingman upgrade on a supporting ship worked like a charm! I've also tried Outmaneuver on the Firespray and found it worth every point.

My "Fetty Fetty Bumm Bumm" list:

Firespray - Boba Fett

- Recon Specialist

- Outmaneuver

Shuttle - Omicron Pilot

- Heavy Laser Cannon

- Advanced Sensors

Tie Bomber - Captain Jonus

- Wingman

The idea was that Jonus stays directly behind the Shuttle all the time and supports it with Wingman by removing stress every round. In addition to that he gave 2 rerolls to the Shuttle for it's HLC. This opened up 2 possible ways to fly the Shuttle: I could either park it permanently in one of the corners by using the stop-maneuver every round and then removing the stress with Wingman right away or I could use the enhanced maneuverability and fly around with it. The stress removal by Wingman meant that I was able to turn the Shuttle around in 2 rounds without the need for an Engine Upgrade. I mostly set my ships up in one of the corners with Jonus behind the Shuttle and had him crashing into the Shuttle constantly. His rerolls work anyway and Wingman doesn't need an action either so I could live with Jonus having no actions.

The list worked best when I just stayed in the corner and let the opponent come towards me. The Shuttle never had to move and due to the Advanced Sensors it had a focus token every round. With Jonus rerolls to push the HLC attacks the Shuttle was able to dish out damage like nobody's business and there were several one-shots against oncoming Ties.

Boba tried to get some shots in from the side while the enemy came towards the Shuttle. Boba's Outmaneuver was definitely worth it's points! It also works superb against Falcons with C-3PO on board by effectively disabling C-3PO. Outmaneuver is also perfectly suited for the Firespray since it's rear-arc works with this upgrade too. What I liked best though was the combination of Wingman and the Shuttle. This opened up new ways to use the Shuttle and made it really effective.

If I had to fight that list, I suppose I would simply ignore the shuttle, stay out of range of it, gang up on Boba, hopefully taking him out quickly, and then spend time flying in circles till the clock runs out.

And that's why it makes sense to fly Boba in a way that enables him to come back to the Shuttle quickly during the first few rounds. Also the Shuttle is maneuverable enough to take up pursuit should somebody try that approach.

Yeah, but the moment the shuttle leaves the corner, it can be flanked. Anyways, that's just the way I'd try to deal with it.

That's dirty.

I would make room for an engine upgrade on the shuttle after all, because that way, in just two turns, your shuttle could end up having turned up to 270°. That's a very maneuverable shuttle.

I love this idea, it makes me laugh.

I've been running something similar lately.

x2 Gamma + FT + Proton

BSP + Wingman

OGP + Adv Sensors + HLC + ST-321

The Proton Bombs have been fantastic. First shot with the HLC always had a TL + F. It's very nasty. I've found that Wingman + the Shuttle has been my new favorite combo. Now the shuttles dial is much more open thanks to wingman. I've also tried 2 other variations of this. one with 4 AP instead of the bombers, and one with 2 RGP + PTL as well. Not sure which I like best. All of them are fun. Jonus is a little pricey for just a Wingman. I think the BSP is the way to go.

I've been looking at this since Wingman was spoiled and love it. I've only run it a few times because 15pts for stress removal and a bumper is still a lot steeper than upgrading your second shuttle to Yorr.

I'd like to try this list with a different wingman than jonus and no HLC (THAT'S A LOT OF POINTS total).

It requires Yorr to siphon a stress off prior to movement, but this allows for a repeatable Fleet Officer+stopmove:

BSP+Wingman x2

OGP+Fleet Officer+AdvSens

Yorr

Leaves 17 points free, could load up on HLCs, maybe Mara and Tactician so it can go full stress recycling.

I like the idea to pair 2 the Shuttle and it's supporter with Bombers and Proton Bombs! Definitely need to try that because it could work perfectly with letting the Shuttle park in one of the corners. When the enemy comes into range he gets some torps in his face with the Bombers following close behind. Then they can drop their bombs, do their k-turn and have the opponent wedged between themselves and the Shuttle. I'm just a bit concerned that it will amount to less firepower than Boba plus Outmaneuver.

It's correct that Jonus plus Wingman is pretty expensive but despite of that I have to say that he was worth the points for me. The rerolls he gave to the HLC were the main reason that my squad had enough punch even with only 3 ships (and one of those having only two 2 red dice, too). He's also better suited to fly near the Shuttle since he has the 1 straight-forward maneuver that a Tie Fighter lacks. And of course there's his PS 6 which actually helped. There were several times were Jonus was able to land some hits or strip tokens from an enemy ship so the Shuttle could finish it off with the HLC.

I'm also curious about a squad where one or two Defenders with secondary weapons are supported by Jonus. Has anybody tried that yet?

Check the thread on the national championships--someone came 4th in the Nordic championship using two Defenders w/ HLCs + Jonus and Predator.
