Dealing with Tough groups

By tronenberg, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

a ubese group therw smoke a grenade that they could see thru. 1 threat

tear gas - 1 threat visibility, 1 threat breathing, 1 threat burning eyes..

stun grenades - 8 blast, perfecy for low strian maruders. three at once.

ambush - minions with a leader and a light repeating blaster. leader tacks hits on other minions.

Trying to figure out what the OP is asking...?

Tronenberg, I want to help you, but I am having problems determining what your issue is. Are you trying to gauge difficulties for combat checks with those hazards you mentioned.

I think - and I could be mistaken here - that's he's offering advice on how to deal with tough groups of players (or NPCs). Suggestions include tear gas (one setback die for smoke, one for running eyes and one for having trouble breathing), tossing stun grenades, and having NPCs lying in ambush with a light repeating blaster.

I may have been doing that too. I can't be sure though.

Oh freddled gruntbuggly,

Thy micturitions are to me,

As plurdled gabbleblotchits,

On a lurgid bee,

That mordiously hath blurted out,

Its earted jurtles,

Into a rancid festering confectious organ squealer.

Someone got a decoder ring from his box of breakfast cereal!

It was an epic first post though. Welcome top the boards to Tronenberg. This all reminds me of this gem.

Is it just me, or does Dirk Thistlebritches sound like an awesome name for a Gnomish Ranger?

And of course, the Strong Bad Email that started it all: http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail58.html

[mind blown]

Haley, you make everything so clear!

I imagined him as a pulpy, Selonian archaeologist.

To go back to what the OP was talking about:

It all depends on what you classify as "tough." There's a lot of discussions with dealing with PCs with high soak values or favored tactics against NPCs, but here's some info that may be related to what you want:

==Tactics==

You hit the nail on the head with the distraction-like things. Smoke grenades, flashbangs, getting rid of the lights (but the opponents can function via technology or a racial bonus), etc.

Setting up a crossfire is never a bad idea, either. In a previous session, there was one minion left of a minion group, but rivals were still standing. I then gave the boost die for an assisted action instead of trying to roll and HOPING for the advantages needed. Sometimes, nothing's more intimidating than a firing squad providing support to that one shooter. . .

==Environmental Hazards==

Like the above, alterations to the environment (purposely or accidentally) can be great to use. Is the party fighting on a ship and the pilot wants to make things tougher for the opposition? Turn off the inertial dampeners and make things interesting by shifting gravity! Need to make an escape? Set fire on things behind you!

==Destiny Points==

You have them for a reason, and it's weighted to give the GM more points than the players. Upgrade those difficulties!

==Deux Ex==

Make things tougher and seemingly impossible just because. If the players are that tough and they think that well, they'll appreciate the challenge.
