Do you have advice for two players looking to get started?

By bmwrider, in X-Wing

My friend and I are interested in getting this game, what should we get first? Just the basic set, or a basic set and a few extras.

There is a lot to buy how do you keep things even?

I know there is some sort of points system so I don't want to order the wrong stuff.

Is there any advantage for use to each get the basic set?

Is there any thing we should know before we start?

If you were starting over would you do anything different?

Is there anyting in the rules that we should look out for, you know to avoid early mistakes?

You cannot go wrong with 2 core sets. After that, it depends on what you like. I prefer Empire myself.

In order to acquire all of the upgrade cards, you will need to purchase one of every ship...pretty much. That being said, you don't need them.

You can download a decent squad building app.

Hello! I was in your spot, not that long ago, except I got lucky enough that a veteran player set me up and I like what he gave me:

Core set

Imperial Aces

X Wing

Tie Fighter

Millenium Falcon

Basically, it allowed me to field two 100 point squads, one Rebel, one Imperial and allowed me to play with friends who were not going to invest in the game. On the imperial side, it gave me 3 Tie Fighters and 2 Interceptors, so a mini swarm and some flankers with Elite Pilot cards for fun. On the Rebels, it gave me a classic Chewie and two Xwings filled with droids, torpedoes and ion cannons. It made for a great introduction and honestly sucked me in so hard, i have spent way too much money in two months.

All of it costs about 100 dollars (I just priced it up on Amazon at exactly 99.38).

When I first started, I grabbed a core set plus an Interceptor and A-wing. If I were to do it again, probably would get something other than the A-wing. B-wing was my next purchase, then a pair of bombers. But this was when wave 1 re[rints were unavailable.

Definitely get a pair of core sets, and a TIE fighter and X-wing pack for the pilots. Those may come slightly later because you want a variety of ships, but they're definitely important.

The Falcon+Firespray are fantastic early purchases too

Take out a loan and buy every ship, you will forget all about how irresponsible it is once you start playing this awesome game!

The things. Buy them all.

Each of you will eventually want two core sets and at least one of every ship for both sides just for the upgrade cards if nothing else!

So said, each of you should get a core set now, and singles of some of the basic ships, XWing, Falcon, Bwing, Ywing, Awing, Firespray, Tie, Interceptor, Defender.

buy what looks appealing to begin with and have fun learning.

Eventually, both of you will have them all!

Start with core set each. Play a couple of games and get your feet wet.

Then x-wing and Falcon (if your shop has it) for rebels.

Firespray and Interceptor for Empire.

That will keep you somewhat balanced on points. Then play some more.

By that point you should have a nice understanding of different abilities and can decide what next to buy.

Rules wise. My hardest thin to remember at first was declaring my action after moving. Sucks to have moved and realize you forgot to focus.

Read rules, play game reread rules play again etc etc till you are sure you're not messing anything.

Lastly have fun.

The FFG website has a link to the rules. You might want to take a quick read of that before even buying the game. After you have finished you might have more of an understanding of stuff like squad building so that you can go and buy some ships based on what you think you would like to run. There is a great squad builder here: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/

I'm not sure what your funds are but here are some suggestions.

Two core sets is not required but it is nice to have.

For the price you get three ships, 6 dice a spare set of maneuver templates and range ruler in case you lost or break one ( I've never heard of them breaking they are just cardboard)

If you were to buy each ship individually and an extra dice pack it will probably cost more.

Now I'm not sure if you intend to buy both sides or just pick imperial or rebels, but Imo these are a must

1- Xwing expansion. This gives you wedge who is imo one of the best pilots for xwings.

1- Tie expansion. This gives you Howlrunner who is a must if you want to fly with ties swarms or plan on having lots of ships in the board

1 Falcon. Great ship with its 360 degree turret, and awesome pilots like chewy,Han and Lando. The thing is a beast, and a great ship for new players. Lots of hull and good amount of shields. Also comes with some good upgrades.

1- Firespray (slave one) Again a great ship for imperials. Doesn't have the 360 turret like the falcon but can shoot from the front and back side of the ship.

A little harder to fly than the falcon but after a couple games you'll get the hang of it.

Some good pilots and some assume upgrade cards like gunner and heavy laser canon.

Those are ships that imo are a must to get off you really want to dive in

Some other good ships

Bwing- not agile but can equip heavy laser canon.

Has some great upgrade slots.

It's can take a beating with 5 shields.

Interceptor - A glass canon is best way to describe it.

It can really hurt, but it can die very easy.

It's all about maneuvering and staying out of arcs.

Soontir Fel is imo one of the best pilots on the imperial side. If flown well he can be devastating and hard to kill.

Imperial aces- This will give you two tie interceptor but you get different pilots and new upgrade cards.

Some great pilots in here. Two royal guards which are great for their point cost.

Upgrades like push the limit x2 which is what you want on Sontir Fel.

The other pilots can be fun if they are used right.

Plus the ships look really cool.

Awings - are fast just like tie interceptors. But have one extra hit point. Where the tie interceptors don't have shields, the awing do.

Not as powerful damage wise as an interceptor, but flown well they can be real anoying.

Tyco is a cool pilot and it also has some good upgrades like push the limit.

Tie phantom - This is probably one of my favorite ships. It's real nasty. It had a bit of a learning curve but it had the most attack dice by default in the game and the only ship to have cloak which increases your agility. It's all about maneuvering and staying out of arcs.

The downside I find is i don't have a lot of people to play against so I don't use it much anymore because it really is a beast when flown well. Some people may get discouraged if you use this a lot.

Awesome pilots and upgrades come with this. Some upgrades can only be used by this particular ship.

Hwk - A good support ship. This ship is not about inflicting damage but supporting your other ships. Some pilots can give you an extra attack dice, or increase your pilot skill so one ship can shoot first.

Great upgrades like recon specialist comes with it and a few others. I don't use it much but when I do is a fun ship to have.

It's not a ship your opponent will initially feel threatened by but it can create an headache if ignored.

If you have the money and want to do epic play I suggest

Transport this comes with 4 new xwing pilots which are all awesome in theirv own way and had some great upgrades.

The transport is a hard thing to fly but it looks cool as hell.

The Tantive it may not see much user but just looks awesome.

Comes with C3PO upgrade which is extremely popular on Falcons right now

One ship I suggest to buy last

Tie advanced.

You get vader but it's just not a powerful ship for what it costs to play.

Vader is a cool pilot though, but it really doesn't see the table to much anywhere it seems.

Finally

I suggest to pick away at what you can get. Don't feel the need to rush out and buy everything, unless you have the cash.

Get a few things, and take your time, learn how to fly.

I dove right in and got kind of overwhelmed.

You don't need much to make a good tournament list.

The ships I said are a must would be enough for you to start making some tournament lists and as you pick up more, you can create more.

Hope this helps

Go slow, buy one ship at a time.

You will eventually have a huge collection within a year, and will not burn out. Most important, have fun and don't take a loss too seriously.

I posted this advice on the X-Wing G+ group, and it's worth posting here:

Easy tip for new players:

First, read the rules. Don't get too hung up on things, just read them once and get a sense for the possibility space of the game.

Then play the game.

Play it with a friend who knows it's a learning game. Know that it will take a bit of time to play this first game. Say "pew pew pew" a few times, though.

Now switch sides with your friend and play again. Same squads as before, but now with each of you controlling the other side. Say "pew pew pew" some more.

Now read the rules again. Slap your forehead at the things you got wrong. But grin knowing how much fun you had. Chat with your friend about some of the rules you got wrong, and enjoy having a better understanding of the game.

Play again. New squads, built with a more solid understanding of what works. Say "ker-pow" when things blow up. Now switch sides with your friend and play the same 2 squads. Say "pew pew Ker-boom!"

Read the rules _again_. Notice even more things you hadn't previously realized were rules.

Play some more. Never stop saying "pew", "Ker-pow", or "Boom".

May the Force be With You.

or a high paying job. also try to put of marriage and kids they cut into X wing time and money you spend on presents, hoildays and food for them is less money you have to give to FFG :P

I agree with this, but would double up on the Core set as many will tell you.

You can't go wrong with two core sets, but whatever you do, don't combine the damage decks!

Other than that, I'd try and add expansions in a fairly balanced way. That will give you more options for both sides as you get to grips with the game. You can generally download the upgrade cards from various places around the 'net in order to try things before buying packs. It's a great way to see if you like particular builds before committing dollars.

I agree with this, but would double up on the Core set as many will tell you.

If he's playing with another guy. I'd consider just 1 core set each. Can swap ships, then each one has a set of templates, dice, ect...

Thanks for the combo of good advice with a fun candy topping.

Yes. Osoroshii.

1 core set each is the idea.
