Watch out for space rocks!!!

By BEAULONEA, in X-Wing

So I played a friendly game of x-wing on sat. and aside from the usual dice blaming and cheating accusations, it was a really good match. This is prolly the 4th or 5th game my buddy and I have played and each time we learn something new. This time for me, I found the asteroids to be incredibly annoying. My piloting skill aside, I found it frustrating that ships can bump into each other with little consequence, but can't seem to maneuver a highly advanced starfighter around a floating space rock without having to roll for damage. Now I'm sure I would have less a of an issue with this rule if not for it knocking the shields off of two of my z-95s and providing the death-blow for one of my E-wings (yes, my skill with the maneuver dial has room for improvement, but we can save that issue for another post). It just irks me that when an Interceptor can't boost out of my firing arc it can just barrol roll into my E-wing to prevent a range 1 attack and take no damage for it, but I get turned into shiney dust when flying past a floating rock.

You can't boost or barrel roll into a ship. If you are going to bump from a boost or barrel then you can't initiate it.

Ok, so I just have to ask. Was the first sentence:

"So I played a friendly game of x-wing on sat. and aside from the usual dice blaming and cheating accusations"

you just being snarky, or do you seriously have issues with cheating when playing with friends? If there are cheating issues (blatant or otherwise), I am curious as to what form they take?

He didn't actually barrel roll into one of my ship, but we joked about it.

Keep in mind the ships aren't actually colliding, just coming dangerously close and have to put their energy into some quick evasive maneuvers instead of futzing with their targeting computer, focusing on the battle, etc.

Also, the asteroids aren't just a single rock, but a small field of asteroids. Of which, the chances of successfully navigating through are 50%. Not too bad.

And I know you asked not to hear it, but you should practice navigating around them. They are designed to be problematic, the game would be kinda bland if we were all just flying through the void of deep space, methinks.

It's a bit abstract, yeah. 3D is abstracted away in a way that makes the game the most interesting for games at the tournament level, where players should rarely fly into asteroids if they don't want to. It's as realistic as any other 3D abstraction would be really, except for a real 3D board and maneuvering rules - but that would be a completely different and much more complex game :D

They aren't really bumping into other ships, they are flying very close in an offputting way. So fast is the relative motion that it is impossible to line up a shot at point blank range.

And an asteroid might not be a single large rock, it might be a cloud of pebbles very difficult to avoid which knock off shields or degrade your hull.

Seriously though, asteroids make manoeuvring more interesting than dancing around each other in a vacuum.

Edit: ninja'd! They came from behind!!

The words you type make sense, but I still think asteroids are lame-sauce.

You don't HAVE to play with asteroids ... but it would make the game really, REALLY boring.

I was the buddy, and needless to say seeing his e-wing bounce off an asteroid and even out the game at 1 ship a piece left a smile on my face lol all cheating aside. But the Corn hole-orn got me in the end...
