Early speculation about game size (points per player)

By Papa Midnight, in Star Wars: Armada

While we have seen the point values for only 3 capital ships so far, what would you guess a "standard game size" to be, in points?

I would think somewhere around 150 - 200pts per side?

Well the VSD is 85. So if you have 100 point games that means a VSD has 15 points for upgrades. But if a VSD is 85, I'd guess a ISD would be 150ish...

I'm also wondering if it will be possible to have a battle where a number of Fighter squadrons go up against a lone capital ship...

A single VSD vs X-Wings, Y-Wings and B-Wings.... :D

Possible?

Well, let's consider the X-Wing starter set. You get enough ships to fill up 20-25% of the game's normal points cost. I imagine the Armada starter set will be similar; FFG wants you buying more minis! An actual ISD will probably be in the range of 150 points, and you have to be able to field at least 2 in an normal battle, so I'm going to guess 500 points as the default size.

I see.

So we are looking at around 3-5(?) capital ships per side, excluding Fighters. That sounds about right for a nominal battle. :)

I expect either 200 or 250 points personally. Gives room for expensive ships without allowing insane amounts of corvettes.

Calling it now by the way: Corvette Swarm. It's gonna be a thing.

200 sounds about right.

My guess would be 300 points.

That would give us 3 VSD's or a swarm of 6 corvettes, both with points left over for upgrades and fighters. I suppose it really comes down to how expensive fighters will be, and how effective they are.

Speaking of fighters, anyone want to bet that fighter squadrons will be their own pack to purchase? I can see it now, a wave could be a big ship for each side and a fighter squadron for each side.

Somewhere in the 300–500 point range. Guessing that an unupgraded ISD will cost 120–150 points , so that is why.

500 was my guess as well, as it would be necessary to field the larger ships (ISD, Mon Cal Cruisers, etc.) with even a few upgrades. It also won't feel very epic to me if the battle is capped around 200 points. That would be one ISD or a couple of Victories...not exactly large-scale fleet action.

Who knows, though.

One thing to consider... The point value you see on the cards may not be final.

That said, I'm betting what you get with the starter set is about half of what you'd need for a full list, perhaps a third.

I tend to like games where the points total leads to interesting and often difficult choices. With the VSD at 85 that point would come into play at 100-150 you have enough for one cool toy but not two.

Problem with that Amanal, is that there's no room for the real cool toys. Like an ISD or a Mon Cal.

So the points need to be at least high enough for one of those decently kitted out. Probably 150-200 minimum.

And perhaps enough for two of them bare bones. Perhaps 250-300.

I tend to think that will be it for standard games. Any more than that and we give people the option of fielding a dozen corvettes, which (like tie swarm in x-wing) would really bog tournaments down.

I don't see a problem with that!! You just can't take a Death Star in a standard pickup game.

I'm expecting, based on the point value we see so far, that the game will be in the 250-300 point range. 300 points makes some sense, since that matches Epic.

A 300 point game would most likely allow 2 ISD's with upgrade and escorts. 2 MonCals with either more upgrades or perhaps more escorts, since MonCals were typically a bit smaller and had less firepower then ISD's did.

I have a feeling the starter ends up being around 100 points per side.

The game relies on missions to form a ballence between larger slower but far more heavily armed ships with faster, smaller, but far less armed ships. Given that 2+ SSD's may start to tip that out of ballance, I am going to stay with the 100-150pt range.

So in the X-Wing starter, you get an X-Wing for Rebels. Without upgrades, that's roughly one fifth the tournament standard. So if the Victory-class is 85, the standard would be around 420, making it likely rounded down to 400.

When they start adding in larger Star Destroyers, especially if they ever release an Executor, it would probably be in it's own 'Epic' game mode.

Well so far we now that the Victory Star Destroyer costs 85 points, the Corellian Corvette costs 44, a Tie Fighter squadron costs 9, Howlrunner 18, Luke 20, and X Wing squadrons cost 14. So that should hopefully give us an idea. And from looking at the shot of gencon it looks like the imps are running with 2 destroyers and 6 fighters, 3 each. While the rebels are going to battle with what looks to be 2 corvettes, 2 Frigates, and 4 X wings.

It'll be 500, I'm guessing, if the points stay where they're at right now.

Think about it this way - if the points are set at 100-200, you're going to be controlling 1-2 VSDs at most.

That wouldn't be very interesting.

They're different games, obviously, but Battlefleet Gothic games usually were played at somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points per side. In that system, a cruiser would cost between 150-180 points, a battlecruiser between 180-250ish, and a battleship 300+, with smaller escort ships coming in at 25-50 points.

So, in a standard game, you'd have between 5 and 10 capital ships per side, along with fighters and escort ships.

FFG has shown with X-Wing that they prefer to structure the competitive scene on a smaller scale (in X-Wing, you might have 3-5 ships per side in a tournament list), but still, I think we're going to see a system that allows for each side to field at least 4-5 large ships at the standard points cost.

The more ships you can bring, the more interesting the game is.

Gencon demo puts the target point cost at 300. So, about 3 Victory's.

Yeah James said the standard game will be 300. He also mentioned a commander that's required but apparently wasn't part of the demo, that is around 25 points.

FFG rep in the team covenant walk through confirms its 300 points and that 6x3 is the tournament playing size

Ready to buy three core sets? :)
