Price Point -- Breaking the Bank

By tlbauerle, in Star Wars: Armada

$100 for a core set. This box size looks comparable to the X-Win core set, which allows me to speculate on model size, and extrapolate expansion costs at $25-$35 a ship dependng on squadron size.

Um...

Does this seem incredibly expensive to you? Sure there are tons of bits... But with all the money poured into my X-Wing components...I can't see jumping in to this next year. All my excitement went out the window with the price point.

There is no way you can compare box sizes based on those pictures.

Starter sets aren't designed to make any money for the company really, they often break even at best on them. Because selling the starter set means buying more things.

So $100 for the core set means you're most likely getting more then $100 worth of stuff just like with the X-Wing core set.

That said, yes I'd expect the expansions to run the $20-30 range for most stuff, more for big ships like a ISD. If that's more then you can manage then that's just how it is.

My wallet is fu€£ed...

Given the 3rd party market for acrylic tokens and what-not, I'm guessing they're just increasing the cost (and value?) of their gaming aids. Look at the dials, miniature bases, and the movement template in the preview picture. It looks like they're sinking more money into those.

Also, while it's hard to gauge the size of the box from the imagery, it looks to me like it's a bit bigger than the X-Wing core set. Maybe I'm getting that from the imagery, comparing the size of the dice and the cards (which is probably standard), to the minis and then the minis to the box.

Now, I don't know if that equates to a $40->$100 jump, but that's where I'm guessing the money is going.

The Core set includes a VSD, a Neb-B, a CR90, and 10 fighter groups. 13 "miniatures", (10 small, 2 medium, 1 big), plus dice, movement stuff, tokens and such. It's not quite the same as X-Wing's 3 medium miniatures (for a fair comparison).

Did you expect the minis to all be the same size as X-Wing's snubfighters? Capital-scale battles are going to have a capital-scale cost. The Victory alone likely accounts for a significant chunk of the cost, as it looks to be 2x-3x the size and volume of X-Wing's normal minis, and the set has 11 other playing pieces.

X-Wing has been priced very reasonably, and I have no doubt that Armada will be as well, to the extent that production costs allow.

That box looks like it's the same size as the x-wing core to you?

I'd be willing to put money down that it's the FFGs standard box size for board games like arkham horror, netrunner, merchant of Venus and so on. Those boxes measure 12"x12"x4"

Geez, you guys are a bunch of apologists. Looking at card sizes, compared to models and everything else, t s very easy to assume this box may be only an inch deeper than the x-wing box. The length and width look the same. Whatever.

Yes, I see it comes with more "miniatures". I am not ignorant.

But I don't see 60% greater value...enough for ME to guarantee I will pop in and buy two core sets on release.

$100 to start in this game is way too much. This isn't a Fleet Captains size box (I know, I know) but comparatively, look at the ships they gave you there. I don't care about counting the squadron avatars, which their size is fine...but I see a CAPITAL SHIP game and three CAPITAL SHIPS for $100 being too expensive for me. I am probably not alone...and I see it growing like X-Wing because of the price point.

I am sure this will be priced the same as x-wing. Probably $40-$50 retail for the core box set and $15 for most blisters and $20-$30 for the larger ships. They are all made for cheap in China anyway.

So, you're thinking that they're lying to us about the $99.95 price tag up on their website ?

Only 100 bucks.

Put my preorder down for two please.

Don't care.

Gimmie.

That being said, who pays full retail for any game these days? I am sure all the major online outlets will have it for much less.

I do. I feel like the FLGS (friendly local gaming store) where I like to go and play deserves some support because of the playing location that it offers me, and the opportunity it gives for me to meet fellow gamers. Sure, I have to pay a little more, but I'm not so destitute that I can't afford that.

Yeah, I paid retail for pretty much everything on my X-Wing list, though it is hard to not Amazon the Transport and Corvette. Still, even if you hit sales, this is an expensive game.

The quality is way up for this new game. The neat bases with their built in dials alone cost a nice bit to produce, and in full color no less. There are three sets of full color cards too. Not to mention plenty of wonderful miniatures! This is just great!

:) ^_^

STAR WARS ARMADA is going to be an awesome game!!!

^_^

You cheap-ass-people do not deserve the privilege of owning this level of quality and workmanship from such an excellent company.

All I know is that I saw the movie for the first time in 1977. I was 6 years old.

It's been part of my life SINCE then. Gaming too since early 80's.

It is unavoidable...it is...my destiny.

You and me both. I love me some FFG now.

The dimensions look closer to the Descent 2nd Ed box, to me. Of course, we won't know till we actually see the models this week at Gencon.

Apologist? No, I just have a different definition of "too much". $100 feels very fair for what's in the Core Set. Not too expensive, and not too cheap.

You are welcome to not buy it, no one has ever made it a requirement.

Lessee, if we guestimate the round bases for the fighter to be around X-wing base size, then the Victory is going to be about the size of a Decimator. Maybe slightly smaller. The Nebulon-B is slightly bigger than most fighters, while the CR90 seems to be the only fighter sized ship. So say...

$35 for the Victory.

$20 for the Nebulon-B

$15 for the CR90.

Total guestimated value in big ships alone: $70.

What we get for the remaining $30 more than makes up for it.

The clicker movement thing seems like a fairly complex piece of plastic. The X-wing movement was all cardboard templates.

I could imagine that they might need to have gone to a higher end place in China to get the movement clicker manufactured properly.

Ah, didn't see they had priced it yet. Plus, they could always change that at a later date. $100 puts it on the upper end of any FFG product.

I don't think there's any chance they'll change the MSRP. Everything they're manufacturing is based around that target number. And since (as others have said) starters are typically a break-even venture, I'm sure that $99.95 is about as low as they could go.

Doesn't mean that's what we're all gonna pay though. :)

I was excited at first, too. But it's just another Über-Rich Games production, after all.

X-Wing has been priced very reasonably, and I have no doubt that Armada will be as well, to the extent that production costs allow.

X-wing is outrageously priced compared to all other games of its type. Once upon a time, $100 bucks netted 84 figures. Today it nets as many as 10 and as few as 1.

Someone here is already chomping at the bit to scream GAMES WORKSHOP but if that is your only argument in defense of this statement, you've already lost. Everyone knows they're a rip off company.

Rich Man Games, that's what FFG means.

I think comparing it to collectible miniature games is a bit unfair. Games have gotten fairly expensive.
