Can someone help me get started?

By Frosty015, in Only War

So my friends and I are big 40k fans, and we've been meaning to play Only War. I was appointed GM, so right now I'm working on figuring out the game. I've played DnD before, so I'm not too green when it comes to RPGs, but I've never been GM before.

Right now i'm trying to figure out the character creation process, I'm using the core rulebook and am currently making a mock character for the time being. Do the players get to choose which basic skills they are "Trained" in? and what's with the +10, +20 and so on beside those?

It can be somewhat of a hassle for me, since I have a PDF for the rulebook, and it can be somewhat frustrating scrolling back and forth with my slow computer.

Would anyone have a step by step procedure on character/regiment creation? Thanks!

You spend starting XP or earned XP to train in a skill. If you have the right aptitudes, it's not really THAT expensive. The +10,+20 etc is a bonus to the skill test. Say a skill test had a +0 modifier, but I had a trained skill (+10), then I would add my plus ten modifier to the initial test.

So if a player were to train a skill, they would tick both the [trained] box and one of the [+ x] modifiers? (Basing this off the character sheets in the core rulebook)

I'm not 100%, so i'd wait for other opinions but that's what I think.

Every Skill has staggered levels of training. Untrained is when no box is ticked, then you get a -20 malus , because the character has no training in the skill or can outright not use the skill in case of specialized skills (like Forbidden Lore, Navigation (Warp)) If you have trained a skill (called known - first box) you can use the skill without penalty or bonus. After that there are the +10 (called trained, yes is confusing), +20 (called experienced), +30 (called veteran) box that you by in order and get the listed bonus. So +10 if you bought or got the skill twice, +20 trice and so on. A character start with the skills trained (first box, unless he get one twice then the first to boxes for +10 bonus) demoted by the regiment and specialization. After that he can spend xp to buy more skills to trained level or improve the already trained skills further. Also see page 102 the levels and cost for buying skills.
