Will you buy star wars armada?

By Krynn007, in X-Wing

Looks like FFG may still encounter problems with scaling in this game.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but I'd guess the Victory Class Star Destroyer looks to be around 8-10 cms long

-Using the same scale for other models, that would put the standard Imperial class SD in the region of 16-20cms and the Executor class SSD at close to 2 metres in length.

My guess is that FFG are simply not going to bother having the models to the same scale at all.

Well to be fair, to have a practical game, somthing in the scale department has to give. Also these appear to be just renders at this point, the actual models could be sized differently.

Buying starter, expansions if I can get atleast 2 friends to play it with me. Just like how I handled x-wing, and any other expandable collectible game that sounds epic

I promised them I would buy it if they built it. Star destroyer models alone will make it something I want to own. Not so big on painting though... I wonder if all my paints are as dry as they ought to be. (Yes they are 20 years old, and yes for some reason I keep bringing them with me when I move.)

After being away all weekend, I'll jump in now (because I know everyone was waiting for *my* input on this...) ;)

I'd have to see a demo of it first. Or someone who really knows how to play, run a session or two of it. Besides, I'm too heavily invested into X-Wing now to start buying another complete system. It's just too much, too soon in my books. I barely get to play enough X-Wing as it is.

It may appeal to a certain market, but it almost feels like it could go the WH40K epic route and just be a cute alternate game to play. If someone else buys the miniatures and just lets me play when I show up.

In a word: Yup.

I just built a 100 model Elf army for $500. 100 small base ships would cost me $1,500 and be about the same amount of material.

you're comparing apples to oranges, and total net weight to useful material...

I've spent around $500 on X-Wing, and for that I have about 58 models. With those 58 models I can put together about 65-70 different lists between Rebels and Imperials. Your 100 model elf army you can do what 3-5 different armies?

The amount of models just doesn't matter because of the scale. The only thing that really matters is the amount of money it takes to put together an effective list. With a much smaller model count X-Wing is a much better deal.

Again the idea that X-Wing is higher cost per model, that's somewhat debatable. A Dreadnaught costs $46... The amount of plastic in it, just doesn't matter to me, what matters is how much per model.

Sure a single squad of space marines works out to be $4 per model. But you need at least 2 boxes of them as the core of a list, so that's $80 for 20 models... But those 20 models isn't enough to give you a playable force. So looking at it purely as price per model is not really a useful comparison.

Maybe, I do not have the same salary as I had last year and to be honest I wait until the product line develops before I get into it.

I was away over the weekend, though when i read the release news I didn't even try to convince myself to wait or not to get this game. I am as exited by this as I was X-Wing, I regressed to my 8 year-old self and can't wait to get my hands on this game next year... is it "early 2015 yet?" :)

The only thing I hope is that FFG don't release x-wing waves and Armada waves at the same time... just to keep the 'minister of finance' happy (happy being a relative term in this case) in our house.

I will buy both and enjoy them for different reasons.

Shut up and accept my credit card!!!

100 Elven models is just 1 list, with some small variations. It is like having 8 tie fighters, and choosing between 8 Ties, Howlrunner + 6 ties swarm, or full named Tie swarm. Except of course, those 8 tie fighters cost much cheaper if you know how to get them.

How do i know this ? Well, i actually had played the last years High elves and Wood elves ^^

Yes. Coolstuffinc or amazon for $80.00 per core (I'm guessing on the discount, but I don't think I'm off by much). Two core sets for my Birthday (October). If I don't really enjoy it then I'll trade it for an LCG or something.

I won't be buying Armada. I'm already invested in X-Wing and can't afford another miniatures game.

Unless they stop making new X-Wing releases of course.

At first I squealed like a little girl. Then after mulling it over, I have come to the conclusion that I can take it or leave it. I have no doubt that it will be a good game with awesome models, but I really don't need another game system. So if people in the area are playing it, then I will get it. If not, I will leave it alone (maybe buy the starter and a ship or two) because my hobby funds can only go in so many directions.

i'm not sure, i don't really dig epic, and 100$ bucks is a lot , and there is stuff to paint uuuhhhgggg.

I'm on the fence about it.

On the one hand, I think they've done the "sliding/relative scale" thing just about exactly right. Some people STILL, incredibly, insist upon Pure Scale for such a game, and that's just not gonna happen. They've done it as best as can be.

That said, I don't think they topped out BIG enough. It looks like the Victory will mass somewhere between the Decimator and the Transport. It SHOULD mass at about the Transport and the inevitable Imperial-class closer to the Tantive IV. Then, leave out the Executor entirely since it's ridiculously big for the game.

Then, I feel like the ships are overwhelmed by the crazy bases. They even have feet, like a bookcase or something. Dials stickin' out ever'whur... if the ships were bigger, it might fly. But for me, as it is the models are put on the back-burner.

For lots of you, that might be fine. You wanna play the game. Me, I want the ships... and I'm juuuusst not feelin' it at this time.

Will you buy the new star wars armada when it's released?

Will you wait?

Will you not buy it at all?

Will you continue to play both

Or move on?

What will determine if you decide to buy or not to buy?

Cost?

Simplicity?

Time length?

I'm all for it.

I'll probably buy it on release.

I don't see this taking me away from xwing.

Xwing is and will always be my main baby

1. No

2. No

3. Yes

4. No, just X-wing

5. For me it is a treason. Of course some x-wings match can be very long and that is not so good, but i think they should release those ships on x-wing not create a new game.

Those victory class star destroyer and Medical frigate should be at x-wing and not change focus to a new game.

Ima buy the crap out of Armada!

no

nothing. Buying no matter what

Its probably around 9cm (about the leanght of a game card judging from the pictures), it would make sense since its 900 meters long normally.

That would make Imperial class 16 cm long but it might be scaled down a bit to 13 cm or so. Same as Corvette and Nebulon were brought closer in size.

Empire might also get vindicator class heavy cruiser (600m-6cm) and imperial class frigate (400m-4cm) as some of the smaller ships. Personally i dont like those other unimperial looking imperial cruisers, trinagles stronk.

On the Rebel side Calamari cruisers won't probably be longer than 12 cm.

I don't think I'll get into Armada. I'd be curious to play it, but I can't really commit to another miniatures game. At least they seem to be different enough to not be competing with each other. I already don't get to play X-Wing as much as I'd like, so...

Will buy it.

Will play it.

It will take some time away from X-Wing and Clix, but wil probably only play Armada once every 4 to 6 weeks unless it is absolutely amazing.

The thought of commanding a Star Destroyer is an opportunity I cannot pass up. I will be buying the core set when it comes out. If all goes to plan money and time won't be a concern next year. Also I will continue to play X-wing.

In a straightforward reply to the OP, yes. :)

Maybe, but only if the small squads of ships feel fun to fly and have cool characters headlining them.

My gaming group has already decided we're all basically in on it. I just hope the pricing is similar to xwing to keep me interested
