Will you buy star wars armada?
Right now I'm not terribly excited about it since large-scale fleet battles have never been very appealing to me. I'd have to see it in action.
Edited by DagobahDaveNot likely currently. As awesome as it is, lacking the funds sort of complicates matters.
Somebody hurry up and post the futurama take-my-money gif
Definitely going to buy this.

I stand corrected
Edited by Krynn007I'll probably wait. I don't want to dive in.
However, if someone else offers the chance to play, well, yes I will!
OH GOD, I JUST NOW SAW THIS.
I need a new job that pays more money, NOW.
I can see the headline now: "Man caught selling his body to the night to pay for miniatures gaming addiction"... I wanna say it would be in the Lifestyles section of the paper
.
No, not interested. I will stick with X-Wing.
Not until I've had a chance to play it a few times to see if it's something I like.
I probably won't right away. I want to see it in action. The shield and activation markers and command stack all look like strange design decisions to me. I'll probably let everyone else be the first adopters.
Unfortunately the price point on this is about double what I'd be able to pay for it. If it's anything like X-Wing or the LCG, you'll probably want two Core sets to really get going. Plus expansions, and you're probably looking at $300-400. That's a steep plunge, and will be the biggest barrier for the game.

I completely agree with this
I will buy at least the starter to test the waters. I like the idea of having my choice between Dog Fights and Naval Battles.
The day it comes out.
Without a doubt. I just hope it plays well.

Hmm, I think that's a bit of a leap go conclusion. People often buy two core sets because, at current price, two core sets are incredibly cheap for what you get. You can easily play with just one core set and additional ships you buy separately.
But lets look at what we're getting for that $100:
- Ten unpainted squadrons
- Three bigger ship models, one of which a quite sizeable Victory.
- Nine dice
- Almost a hundred cards.
- A manoeuvring tool with plastic incorporated, rather than just cardboard.
- "dozens" of tokens
That's quite a bit more than we got in he X-wing core set. I would guess this will alleviate much of the "must buy another core set" pressure and lets people dive into the expansions. The prices of which will vary depending on the type of ship you want to get.
I'm guessing that ships like the CR90 and Nebulon-B will be around X-wing miniature price. Maybe a tad more as they have more bits and baubles. Let's say... $20 compared to X-wing's $15. The Victory seems comparable to the Falcon in size, so those those should be $35-ish.
I'd eyeball the entry price into Armada for a "full" fleet of one faction at around $200,- Still quite a bit more than X-wing (which pings at about $85 for rebels at FFG price, $110 if you're using two core sets to get to your ship cap) but unlike X-wing's core set, this core set looks like it will be an entertaining and lasting full game on its own. X-wing's starting cost may have been low, but with a single core set alone battles rarely lasted more than two or three rounds. I expect Armada's core set's games to last quite a bit longer.

But.... dude,...
I thought you were my new partner in crime and all that.
Don't abandon me.
Its a nice new shiny one thats for sure!
Im heavily...HEAVILY...invested in X-wing both as a player and collector sat on 2 Tantives, 6 Transports, 3 Falcons, 2 Slaves, 2 Shuttles and maybe 50+ fighters for each faction with 3 of each new Wave 5 ship on pre-order. I'm a scratch builder and churn out large Star Destroyers and love playing epic and large scale with several players games so as you can tell im all in for X-wing!
Historically Ive always had a love for capital ship games - Gothic, Firestorm, Star Trek Fleet Battles etc and in the past lonnnged for a half descent Star Wars version but with the release of X-wing i feel FFG really took it up several notched and changed the way and 'scale' i want to play in and collect in.
I'd be keen to know if the digital files FFG have used for Armada can be scaled up for x-wing as while i love the fighter action and quick succession of turns in x-wing love the scale of truly large models on the table which really adds to the spectacle of playing a themed game or even going so far as to use house rules on Destroyers Vs Mon Cal ships etc.
Across the board and manufacturers we are seeing a continued push really into the big kits - some of the latest being GW's Knight Titans but this can be traced back to Armourcast putting out the very first batch of Resin kits for Titans into 40k.
While X-wing takes a super detailed snap shot into a dogfight during a space battle and i love the twists and turns of a pilots/apponents trying to out manouver the other i can see the logic in pushing for a full on capital ship game for the Star Wars Universe....A in the fact its STAR WARS and B its a natural progression for FFG (I would list more reasons but this could go on forever lol)
For me though i guess the whole thing comes back to that 'Scale' question i keep asking myself and its importance to me.
On Armada given the physical model size FFG are aiming for re the pictures etc and understanding what you can get away with on the table i do know its possible to find that middle ground to produce something more in-line with the Star Wars universe's TRUE scale of starships to each other (Take an Imperial Star Destroyer, make it around 20 cm long and produce ships in-line with this etc making stuff larger or smaller as needed and apply that artistic license- within reason - http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/064/b/3/starwars_and_wh40k_ships_2_by_dirkloechel-d39j5n5.jpg )
I know with X-wing its difficult to keep track of stuff in large games let alone the what seems at times to be hundreds of tokens over the table and stat cards all over the place. Same with moving so many ships in either a small or large play area while figuring out where those Epic models are going to move.
All in all though even though i love the idea of fielding huge fleets of ships small or captial i think the physical size of x-wing and its scale now (both 1/270 or whatever it is and its physical 5cm model) works and feels best for me.....same with the size of the Tantive (1/400ish i believe and its 34 cm table model). Its a bigger spectacle and a prefered play format for me....so much so that Ive left other games for X-wings increased physical sized models on the table.
Modeller, Collector, Gamer - X-wing ticks all the right boxes for me from rules, miniatures, scale, cost price etc and while im unsure at this stage if i'll be a Gamer, Collector and Modeller in Armada i do wish it a big success....BUT id rather not see this success at the expense of X-wing or future potential products and releases within X-wing.
Maybe.. problem is I like stuff to be in scale.. also i like the detail level of the X-wing stuff.. you can only get that by being in a larger scale. however if its playable than i might get it. just hope its not like any of the other large fleet battle style games. basically a big 360 degree arc slug match and not much maneuvering makes for a kind of boring game..

From what we've seen so far, front arcs deal the most damage, followed by broadsides and lastly the rear. You can fire two different arcs a turn which means that getting enemy ships into that sweet spot so you can aim both front and one of your broadside arcs at it seems to be the ideal firing position. Depending on the distance, position and the size of your target, this makes manoeuvring in this game even harder than X-wing, where you only have to point one arc at your opponent for maximum firepower. And with huge ships like the Victory it will make it quite a challenge to predict where your opponent will be three turns in advance.
...Yeah, I think manoeuvring is still key to victory in Armada.
Edited by kerokoPersonally I will buy the starter, if.....
The posts about buying a double starter are important, I think. The text on the product description page states that 10 squads of fighters come with the set. If the picture at the bottom is correct, and you get 6 squads of TIE fighters, then the remaining 4 are X-Wings. Depending on the rules this seems like all you would need to play through games. Another this is how is FF going to tie this in to X-Wing? Will there be crossover tournament play where an Armada battle will turn into an X-Wing mop up mission? It's hard to tell at this point, but I think most X-wing players will at least give it a try.
No.
I will be buying Armada as well as the inevitable ground war game that will eventually follow it.
