Armada the Near End of X Wing?

By ghaerdon2, in X-Wing

Yeah, you can't really hope for a fleet game and then be upset that it's not in scale the way X-wing is (setting Epic aside). The set of ships is a bit too heterogeneous for that.

I'm not so sure that I agree that the heterogeneity of the ships makes it imperative that it couldn't be done to scale. The scale of Star Wars is part of its allure! The Star Destroyer swallowing up the Tantive in ANH was... one of the major scene-setting moments.

If they can come out with a 12" Tantive for X-Wing, then I think they can come out with a similar-size model for the ISD. Also, they can reduce the size of the corvette-size craft.

(Maybe they could train fleas to wear costumes so as to play the fighters... Okay, so that was not serious, but the previous point is in earnest.)

Armada's Tantive is talking Executor territory. ISD'll probably be noticeably bigger than the Victory but hardly a giant centrepiece.

I think that Armada will fit the EPIC role better than the the huge ships being released currently for X-wing. I'm looking at the scale as the determining factor. For months the talk about which ships would come out would have to be number crunched on what its scale size would be and if it would fit on the table. Armada solves all of this.

I can see Armada and X-wing complementing each other very well. You could campaign with capital ships in a fight, switch out to do squadron on squadron 100-150 point fights and, my prediction here, they will come out with a ground based version as well. That way you can do it all, capital ship engagements, ground objective assaults, X-wing dogfights.

And tabletop game groups everywhere will be one with the force.

And one more thing. The CR-90 is way too big in scale. FFG, what were you thinking?

Okey, i am sorry but i am not ready to read 4 pages. But hasn't been mentioned that Star destroyers are not all the same? There are Victory Star destroyers, and the scale seems about right.

I dislike the unpainted squadrons, as i hate to paint, but everything looks fine to me, as a true legitimate outlet for the EPIC gameplay withouth disrupting the dog fighting game.

And yes, WHY WOULDNT YOU PLAY BOTH!!!?!?!?!

Disgregard what i said, it looks too big for the Nebulon Frigate imho.

1 year 4 months and 9 days till Episode VII.

This game is not going anywhere.

I agree with this. There are plenty of ships to come out of the new movies.

Why not both indeed. Why not suspect that the devs have thought of ways to connect the two games. I would, and I'm not a very clever guy.

Armada will be like having a second child... Always trying to live up to the first.... Inferiority complex... Hand-me downs (asteroids and game mats)..., but we will love it anyway.

The only problem is my wife might kill me...

Actually, the question I will have to answer financially is... "Armada or a second child?" Hmmmm

Can you put children neatly away in a Plano case when you're done playing with them? No? Well, there's your answer. (c:

I'd imagine it's possible, but should probably be discouraged.

Given that the idea of Armada seems to be fielding multiple big ships, I'd think that rather than a 12" ISD, you'd see the opposite if the stuck to scale. Penny-sized Corvette's.

As I recall, when Attack Wing tried that with the Enterprise, people raged.

You'd be surprised what people can forgive if your models actually look good.

Just ensure that you convince sig others that Armada is a part of X wing and you're not spending money on a whole different game. #whiteliesforsurvival.

Yeah but for some reason I find that when I slice the wing off one of my Minatures, then say to it in a menacing voice, "No, son, *I* am your father!" It just doesn't have the right feel to it. :\

As I recall, when Attack Wing tried that with the Enterprise, people raged.

The problem with attack wing was that ships that are supposed to be the same size weren't. It would be like if in this the cr90 miniature was bigger than the nebulon b.

Having small ships be small miniatures isn't a problem, having inconsistencies is the problem.

Has anyone else thought that this may be the early signs that X Wing is nearing end life?

"Don't you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby".

Yeah I don't mind the sliding scale, as long as things look correct on the table. SWAW had the issue where the Defiance was actually as big if not bigger then the TOS Enterprise. That's a huge problem.

But having a CR-90 that isn't quite in correct scale to a VSD, because the CR-90 would be too small as a model doesn't bother me as long as they look ok on the table.

If/When they do a ISD, if the CR-90 can't quite fit in the hanger bay, but is still dwarfed by the ISD, then I'm ok.

I think Fantasy Flight is smart

They saw here on these boards many of us talking about the bigger ship class's in Star Wars and wanting to play them. Rather than try to squeeze a Star Destroyer or Nebula-B into the X-Wing rule set(and breaking the game) they simple pushed the game up to capital size gaming. If it takes off boom! they just opened up a entire new game line(and Market) with the big baddies we always dream about. I would not be surprised if the two games play very similarly (other than the movement stick thingie taking into account big ships can't turn on a dime) they look pretty much the same to me.

X-Wing is probably gonna fall into the tactical role while Armada will be our strategic level.

Imagine a double Armada/X-Wing tourney. Either way I think FF is gonna have another big seller on their hands with Armada.

Also I would like to cast my vote for the Assault Frigate ;)

Personally, i'm mildly intrigued by armada (as i'm a fleet battles gamer as opposed to dog fighter primarily); however, what drew me to x-wing was the "zoomed in" concept as related to epic play where otherwise small ships in fleet battles games get to take center stage as the big boys. Thus, while i'm pleased to see they have a neb-b in the armada set along with the cr-90 for the rebels, i'd still like to see them release a sliding scale neb-b for use by rebel fores in epic level games of x-wing.

I actually don't think eps 7-9 (especially 7) will have that many new ships. It seems like JJ is trying to pull a lot from the original 3, which didn't have quite enough for 3 waves, so I wouldn't expect a ton of new ships.

Ep 4: x-wing, y-wing, tie fighter, tie advanced, YT-1300

Ep 5: firespray 31, tie bomber, lambda shuttle (crap, can't remember if this was in 4)

Ep 6: a-wing, b-wing, tie interceptor

The skyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy is falllllllinggg....

Is that Serj Tankian's song? Nice!

EDIT: No, wait, that's "The sky is over"

While most people are concerned about the money, my biggest concern is time. I usually get to play X-wing once a week, but if I get into this game it looks like X-wing will get relegated to the every-other-week treatment, which would be sad. I'll see how the game looks at GenCon. Can't wait!

No no, I mean they made a tiny model of the first enterprise that was more to scale, the size of a penny I think because it was three times smaller than its galaxy counterpart, and I remember a lot of rage surrounding that.

But it has been a while since that ragefest, so I could be misremembering...

It wasn't quite that small, about the size of an a-wing.

What I remember is people raging because the classic trek enterprise was that small, but the reliant, a ship that should be about the same size, was bigger than the galaxy class.

The classic trek looked totally sweet btw.

Is not the end is a diferent game and diferents strategies of selling, only are similar in both are with intellestar ships, but end there, so none means the end of other only complete the expirence og gaming in the Star Wars Universe of Original Trilogy and Legends beyond, greettings.

Has anyone else thought that this may be the early signs that X Wing is nearing end life?

No. Fantasy Flight is a huge company. They have more than enough capacity to do two different Star Wars miniatures games. And aside from being space combat games with movement templates, they appear to be very different games. They're making a second Star Wars card game as well, does that mean the Star Wars LCG is coming to an end? Nevermind X-wing is as popular as it's ever been and continues to expand. They'd be morons to drop it and replace it with something different.

FFG seems like a relatively modest sized company to me.
