Expansions

By pgarfunkle, in Star Wars: Armada

OK so this is a bit premature considering the game has barely been announced but as the image below shows core sets suggest expansions.

What expansions do you think/hope this game will see (to get in early I assume everyone wants a Death Star)?

I'm making the assumption that the expansions will include a capital ship and support ships of some sort.

First expansion I would like to see for the Rebels is a Mon Cal cruiser with squadrons of B-Wings.

For Imperials I'm trying to think of something other than Star Destroyers

They'll probably start with the ISD and the Mon Cal, plus more of the Core ships.

Come on!

They'll never do a Star Destroyer. It's too big!

(Oops, wrong forum.)

The question now becomes the Death Star. Will it make it in or not?

Death Star kit is enough paint and a guide that you use on a gym training balloon.

FFG could just include a folded poster that you stick onto your wall with a print of the death star surface with concave dish and call it good.

I'm sure they'll have a death star scenario where a section of it or some such sits in the corner of the play area. Every 2 or 3 turns you get to blow up a Rebel capital ship. Could be fun!

They could add the Executor!

I think a Deathstar and an SSD would be too large, but the standard ISD might be a little over 2x the Victory class ship shown.. so not impossible on this one..

There are quite a few they can do for this... and of course the ISDs and Victorys should have multiple cards for different ships... same with Nebulons and CRs

Honestly, there are probably as many capital ships in the Star Wars inventory as there are starfighters, maybe even more.

Prepare your wallets boys. Its going to be a bumpy ride.

The Executor would be several feet long, and not something I would think they will do.. but who knows.. they may throw scale to the wind on this one

Soo, by my rough calculations:

VSD (1): 900 m
SSD: 19,000 m

So, basically, just over 21 VSDs lined up is the length of the SSD.

So FFG will have to either pull scale shenanigans, or we won't get and SSD.

Fortunately, the ISD is only 1,900 m which would be big but certainly more feasible given my guess is that would be smaller than the epic Corvette (maybe?).

The Death Star may be pushing it, maybe. I would not rule out a SSD however. You can already tell scale means nothing in this game. If they just make it bigger it would work.

I expect a SSD will eventually be done and be about the size of the x-wing cr90 model, so about a foot long.

This game does not and can not have a set scale, scale will have to slide as the ships get bigger. As long as the sliding scale is consistent it will be fine.

You make a fair point.

I'm actually wondering, are the items in the core set to scale?

I assumed they were, but you know what they say about assumptions...

If I could get away with a poster on the wall of a Death Star It wouldn't just be for xwing/armada games-it wouldn't come down! Now I'm thinking of what you'd do for your ultimate xwing (or armada) games room if money/the mrs weren't a problem...

They are not. Look at the CR90 and then the Nebulon-B. Very nearly the same size when the former should be much smaller.

I know very little about Star Wars lore, but from what I gathered, aren't there a ton of star destroyer variants? X-Wing has a bunch of TIE permutations, I wouldn't rule out a bunch of different destroyers...

I think it could has one or two expansions, but not like the X-Wing, because the design of the game don't let it has more, greettings.

And FFG does seem to be fans of the 90's video games.

Most of those ships in Rebellion came from the West End Games RPG as well, so they're all pretty firmly established.

Man, I loved that Rebellion game...

Since they seem to be using a "make smaller ships look smaller and bigger ships look bigger so you get the feel but aren't limited by accuracy" kind of scaling, I expect they'll give the ISD twice half, maybe two-third extra bulk compared to the VCD at most. Got to keep the game playable.

I will probably resist, but if this game gets an Interdictor....

I am excited about the announcement of this game. Unlike a lot of members posting here, I have refrained from purchasing Xwing as, although I have enjoyed the game every time I have played it, a gaming friend of mine has purchased every Xwing ship and it seems, XWing comes out whenever we have a gaming night.

So, I will invest in this game for sure and let my friend continue with Xwing. We can probably have Star Wars themed gaming nights that include both games and perhaps I can win once in a while.

So, why my comment under Expansions? Because I hope that there continues to be some overlap - not only with different Rebel and Empire fighters but with, eventually a Millennium Falcon and Slave One - as part of the expansions (particularly the Millennium Falcon). Like many members here, the MF was a part of my child hood and to be able to include it in certain scenarios would be epic.

Obviously the game is more strategic, capital ship centric but wee models as discussed above on fighter sized bases would make for an exciting gaming experience. Bring on the capital ships FFG - I will pre-order what ever you produce, but please include some larger than fighter, smaller than corvette ships as well - even if its more for theme than strategic game play.
