Star Wars Armada

By Danath "ATLAS", in X-Wing

No more broken Phantoms and silly OP 'stay on target' cards... at least for a while.

Plus with proper objectives, shield facings... the only negative is unpainted fighters... I'll get over that!

This is FANTASTIC!

(Looks at Descent's release schedule)

I would wait and see before making claims about release schedules. While this likely won't be a tournament game, it will have expansions.

I see no reason why this wouldn't be in a tourney.

I hope this is a completely separate game and not an attempt to rescale X-Wing.

I used to play Axis and Allies Miniatures (the land version), where they rescaled the game to make the scale "more even." The rescaling was a flop and the game died soon afterwards. Kinda concerned the same is happening here.

Wasn't this an endeavor on the part of WotC to shoehorn yet another awesome, classic game into the Magic business model? I haven't had any experience with GW, but I got tired of WotC doing their utmost to destroy the games I love. But, hey...I'm not bitter. Okay, maybe I am. A little. Maybe.

Future expansion predictions?

Neb is rebel.Could this be the end to the hope for an Imp epic Neb?

I haven't wanted to be Debbie Downer around here, but there never was any hope for an Imperial Epic Nebulon-B. It's far too large for X-wing and, if that weren't enough, it's always been far more recognizable as a Rebel ship than an Imperial one.

I see no reason why this wouldn't be in a tourney.

Me, neither.

I suspect we might have different time scales for exactly *when* WotC started wrecking the games we love, but it's certainly in full swing now. And I haven't seen any evidence at all that they understand why their market share for those games keeps dropping.

Is that two hours for core or a proper game with expansions (equivalent of 100pt X-wing?)

Since it's on the Core, I presume just that! Usually their times are on the short side if people are playing it properly!

I don't know, a 2 hr play time does not lend it to tournament play.

I'll buy it for the minis alone. The game is a bonus.

It reminds me so much of when I was young and collected Star Wars Micromachine... only now they're bigger... and cooler...

Yeah, I'm slightly worried about what FFG will announce at Gencon. This is only the opening salvo.

Didn't think about that until you and VS said that. The fact that they're dropping this bomb shell now, rather then at Gencon, really makes me wonder what they'll unveil at the con.

Star Destroyer for Armada.

2 hours is fine for a game.. I'm pretty sure this isn't going to be a tourney game.. just doesn't feel like it to me..

A few semi-random thoughts about Armada.

1) I think that what comes with the core set is going to make for a larger game then X-Wing does, relatively speaking. The core set has about 25-33% of the number of ships you see in a typical game. Unless Armada battles are going to be played on a epic sized table I think you're looking at something hat is much close to a "100 point list" there.

2) I think we'll see fewer expansions for Armada. There's just fewer cap ships to add in. ISD, Interdictor, MonCal... and you've got the OT ships I think. Myself I don't expect to end up buying as much Armada, because I don't think you'll need as much. Even on a 3x6 table you only have so much room for ships that size.

3) I wonder if they'll release new fighter squads as a pack, like a Y-Wing squad, a B-Wing Squad, a Tie Interceptor Squad, ect... Or if they'll include those with the Cap ships.

4) I'm expecting the expansion packs to be in the $15-30 range for most of them. I'd say the CR-90 isn't much bigger then a HWK-290.

They have plenty of room for expansions. We see 2-3 different types of Mon Cal Cruisers in the movie. The starter gives us the Victory II, so the I and Imperial I and II are possible. And you don't really need to go very far to get some great additions.

Definitely excited for this and can't wait. I was about to buy the the 2 player starter for firestorm armada because I wanted to play a fleet level game but unfortunately there was really no one playing it in my area. This is a big win win for me since it's more star wars and fleet level.

Only potential downside for me and I know that it is straight up opinion is that most of the rebel capital ships were mon cal and I hate the look if those ships with a passion. They habe bad ads corvettes and frigates but severely lacking in cruisers and destroyers asthetics wise.

HELL YES.

HELLYES.

YESSSSSS.

I will buy that. Several of that.

I am not worried about the price. There are plenty of people out there with 12 tie fighters or some ridiculousness like that. This looks much more awesomer.

Oh HELL yes.

And I wouldn't worry about unpainted... The squadrons are TINY, and come in good colors... The rebels are a good beige color, and the TIE fighters are grey. I mean, look at the last picture... The tie fighters aren't painted, but you hardly notice.

I will, of course, paint the hell out of those, and buy a lot more star was capital ships.

This

Looks

AWESOME.

And way better than the hours-upon-hours, not meant for this scale Epic games,

so the I and Imperial I and II are possible.

The difference between the Imperial I and II is pretty minor, mostly in the systems they carried, and not something you'd notice the difference in models.

I just noticed that, a page back, captain lackwit posted almost the same post I did. How funny is that?

Yesssssss. ive been waiting to get my hands on a ISD. Now I can crush those rebel scum for good.

Next up-Executor.....mwa-ha ha!

Right now I'll just be watching the development of Armada and will not pull the trigger on buying this game till I've had a chance to play it a few times and see if I like it or not.

I wonder how the fighters are moved?

They seem to have a fixed (possibly maximum) speed/maneuver in yellow on their cards (3 for the x-wing, 4 for the TIE).

They also seem to have little holes within their stand that would accept the funky new movement doodad, but the article explicitly states that you only use the for capital ships...

Of course, I'm assuming that the big photo includes all of the components but...?

I heard the box is 27 feet long 27 feet wide and will be fully compatible with X-Wing Miniatures lol

Yeah but it only weights about ten pounds... the glory of plastic!

;)

Awwwww. Look at that. Since it is a miniatures game, we can keep track of (read: be tempted by) BOTH the X-wing and Armada game sets at the same time on the 'Upcoming' page. How considerate of you, FFG.

Family-guy-the-more-you-know.jpg

Now Cubanboy will have even more releases to pine over.

Just a joke, CB, we love you just the way you are, you angry penguin you

Yeah we do...

^_^

Well, the difference in the models would be minor, but they would be noticeable. Also, the capabilities are quite different. In terms of 'systems', the biggest difference is the weaponry. The ISD2's octuple turbolaser batteries are no laughing matter, whereas the ISD 1 would be a better fit for taking down and even capturing smaller starships.

What I do believe is that the core set represents a bulk starting cost, but capable of being a good solid game on its own for a while before buying expansions. The X-wing core set... drove me to buy more fighters as soon as possible because 2 to 3 round games with just three ships were quick and boring.

2) I think we'll see fewer expansions for Armada. There's just fewer cap ships to add in. ISD, Interdictor, MonCal... and you've got the OT ships I think. I doubt the core set will be close to the 100 point equivalent. We're looking at a Victory, a Nebulon-B and a Corvette. Just from the OT alone we're still missing ISD's and Mon Calamari's, which will likely be bigger both in scale and in point cost.

Doubt the idea that this game will lack expansions too. The X-wing game ran out of OT fighters by wave 3. Wave 4 was entirely EU. Heck, the Victory itself is already EU, so we know FFG won't be afraid to reach into the EU for its ships. What they might do from the beginning with this game though is two-ship expansions, rather than the four-ship expansions they've done for X-wing up until wave 5.

The fighter bundling is an interesting question. It does make sense from both accounts. You need capital ships for your fighters, but you can put different fighters on different capital ships. I can see it go either way.

As for prices... the ships have a few more bits and baubles which may raise their price, but I don't expect their cost to be radically different from X-wing. 5 to 10 dollars over their X-wing equivalents at most.
