Star Wars Armada

By Danath "ATLAS", in X-Wing

First: hello to any Fantasy Flight people reading this thread. I'm positive you must be reading this thread if no other. :)

I'm interested in that objective system they have. That looks like something that might be straight forward to port over to X-Wing.

Something I'd love to pick the developer's brains about is the extent to which lessons learned in X-Wing helped them design Armada. I notice that Armada fires first and moves second. That's interesting! Why do it that way? Did play testing Coran Horn inspire it? Etc.

I'm interested in seeing how this plays on the table. I hope it expands the audience for both games more than it cannibalize sales of either.

"ten unpainted squadrons" ... Really? Now I have to paint tiny X Wings and Ties? Not so happy now.

It says play time of 2 HOURS! This is not going to be a tournament friendly system, etc. hence, XWing will be safe and battling away at the tournament and league tables!

40k and Fantasy tournament games are 2 hours.

Ok, I get that this is not going to kill X-Wing, but I think an honest question is if this is going to kill Epic?

EXCELLENT question!

I think what people fail to realize about XWMG.. is that the ships are not infinite. They will eventually run out of ideas, or run out of ships they think they can sell and make money on.. I said it a year or kore ago.. I don't see support for this game after 2016 or so.. other than reprints to keep new players in ships.. not many games get decades of support and new material...

Just my 2 credits...

Not sure I agree. I'm sure we'll see more Extended Universe ships. I'm sure we'll see more "Aces" packs. I'm sure we'll see more Epic scale ships. I'm sure we'll see ships that feature in the upcoming "Rebels" series. We may even still see that much talked about new faction...

And I'm sure that will be more than enough to take us through to the next Star Wars film... which will deliver new ships, new pilots and maybe an entirely new faction in it's own right...

At the end of the day, we're only 18 months or so into the games' life - there's plenty of places FFG can go with it yet.

As was mentioned further above, I dont think thisnthe death knellmof Xwing, I'm also in agreement this is to expand the game overall.. but I've seen games come and go in my near 40 years of gaming...

Dont get me wrong, I dig the game and would like to see it go on and on.. but FFG had a great game.. Wings of War.. a WWI aerial game.. another company now makes that game under a changed yet similar name...

Plus games of this nature have a life expectancy.. yes we all want it to go on, but this will be in .. like you mentioned.. aces packs and some EU ships.. bit those do run out.. and the new movie is so far out of the era for the game, I think they won't use them.. but I could be wrong there.. we shall see..

Overall I'm just saying that this game is fun and I enjoy it.. I dont see new product being made in 3 more years at the outside range.. just my thought.. could I be wrong... yes.. do many want me to be wrong.. probably..

Just my opinion.

I love tactical games that require strategy and a lot of thinking

I'll probably buy it

I just hope it doesn't cut into the xwing games

"ten unpainted squadrons" ... Really? Now I have to paint tiny X Wings and Ties? Not so happy now.

You dont HAVE TO do anything.. if you want to.. feel free.. like other games that use these types of plane squadrons.. they are unpainted.. not really needed

SOOOOOOO glad I'm going to Gencon to check this thing out. I now know which booth I'll be hanging around if I don't make it to the Sat tournament for X Wing.

**** I spent way too much on GW.

So did I. However, GW's ludicrous pricing policies and switch to failcast means that I'm recouping a decent amount of that expenditure on eBay, thus funding my X-Wing obsession...

...and so we are all connected, in the circle of life.

It says play time of 2 HOURS! This is not going to be a tournament friendly system, etc. hence, XWing will be safe and battling away at the tournament and league tables!

They probably arent looking to do this one as tourneys.. I'm gonna assume that right now.. like mentioned.. this is a board game in miniatures...

Is that two hours for core or a proper game with expansions (equivalent of 100pt X-wing?)

I realize keeping everything to scale would be hard, but they could have tried a bit more.

The victory should be 3 times as long as the nebulon, but only looks 1.5 at best.

The corvette should be half the size of the nebulon, but look almost equal in size.

Presume FFG will release a Super Star Destroyer mini - because, obviously they will.

If they made that the size of the current largest-'mini'-they've-released (the "X-Wing Miniatures" Tantive-IV), then the Victory Star Destroyer, in scale with it, would be the size of an XWM A-Wing.

So I think we can see a good argument for the sliding scale...

****. Time to spend more money...

And we aren't even up to the GenCon announcements yet.

We'll see what happens, I for one won't be holding my breath for a SSD

Playing X-Wing made me miss all those extra elements like the ground assaults, Star Destroyers, larger scale space battles...so I went searching in my storage for this little game I played way back called Star Wars Empire at War.

I just finished re-installing this so I could once again get into larger scale play.

And Armada is announced.

I swear it was like they read my mind.

So when is the ground assault xpac coming out? :D

Yeah, I'm slightly worried about what FFG will announce at Gencon. This is only the opening salvo.

Personally I don't think it obvious they will do an SSD granted with a sliding scale it could be done.. but seripusly, a ISD is gonna be 2-3 times the Victory class.. an SSD would be maybe 3 feet long.. on that slideing scale...

Well, that's the whole point of a "sliding" scale.

The 'canon' size of an ISD is about twice the length of a VSD...

...but since the scale slides, FFG doesn't have to do anything but just make it 'noticeably bigger', and they are golden.

Just make it 25% bigger, and *bam*, done!

just be glad they did not include tie/advanced and y wing upgrades for xwing in the box :)

Is that a Mon Calamari cruiser expansion I hear comming in? This was bound to happen, but I'm game. Well played FFG, well played
