Well, we for sure need a new forum for that game.
They have one set up already.

but I would not be done touching up/faffing in less than an hour...
That's something I learned painting Flames of War stuff. There comes a point where the model is too small for any more detail to be noticed.
Ok, I get that this is not going to kill X-Wing, but I think an honest question is if this is going to kill Epic?
I realize keeping everything to scale would be hard, but they could have tried a bit more.
The victory should be 3 times as long as the nebulon, but only looks 1.5 at best.
The corvette should be half the size of the nebulon, but look almost equal in size.
One other interesting thing I noticed. One of the reasons people say prequel ships can't be added to X-Wing is that by its very name it denotes a certain era. However with this game being called "Armada" you could possibly include ships from any era.

I don't know, RodentMastermind may disagree . . .
The rules seem super complicated. Big turn-off.
Expensive buy-in price. BIG problem. Means other releases will be expensive.
Includes unpainted miniatures.
Much more assembly, likely that has to take place during setup.
I don't necessarily see these as negatives, more that they're not making this as a game to compete with/replace X-wing.
Honestly, I think everyone knew this was coming at some point. We'll have to see how it actually plays, but I have to give them a ton of credit for not just making X-wing with a 3" Star Destroyer on the stand (*cough* Attack Wing! *cough*). The rules certainly look more complex, and the gameplay will CERTAINLY be more complex - movement looks far more restrictive, and the need to pre-stack actions over the course of turns is going to make for a game where looking ahead is VERY key. Different arcs having different shielding and volume of fire is going to make maneuver a big deal.
I'm certainly intrigued.
Am I the only person upset by this news? Will they continue to support two miniature games? More likely I see that they eventually run out of ideas with X-wing, taper off its releases, and then begin releasing this as its flagship minis title. I mean, sure, I totally support this existing if they continue to support X-wing just as much as they always have, but not otherwise. Is this a single-box game? Or will it be a new competitive tabletop game with expansions? (I think that's likely)

All reasons I don't like games like Warhammer...
Only good news I see: If they are releasing another competitive miniatures game, it is likely that they are not under threat of loss of license anytime soon. They just NEED to continue to support X-wing or many, myself included, will be sorely disappointed.
But, hey, if I don't like it, I won't play it. All of my concerns could be unfounded, and in fact I hope they are! And they DO have other Star Wars games, just not competing miniatures games. We shall see. Just don't take away my X-wing, FFG.
I think what people fail to realize about XWMG.. is that the ships are not infinite. They will eventually run out of ideas, or run out of ships they think they can sell and make money on.. I said it a year or kore ago.. I don't see support for this game after 2016 or so.. other than reprints to keep new players in ships.. not many games get decades of support and new material...
Just my 2 credits...
Then why'd FFG release this before xwing hits it's apex (which it hasn't yet in my opinion). I don't think this is about replacing xwing-it's about expanding their product lines at a time when they have a clearly receptive audience (sure this essentially makes them their own competition but hey-as long as the money roles in...)

Remember that this game is still a ways off, so things may change (they did with X-wing).

No.

Maybe... I don't see them releasing more than maybe 3 huge ships per side... Perhaps the GR-75 and CR-90 is all the Rebels are going to see.
Still stoked by this. Its going to be awesome.

For sensible people maybe...
It is all happening as I have forseen and I can't wait. It is a steep buy in but, I play other steep buy in games and I doubt this will end up more so then that. I can't wait to try it out.
In the words Pam Ploovey....."Holy **** snacks."
Ok, I get that this is not going to kill X-Wing, but I think an honest question is if this is going to kill Epic?
No. Epic is essentially a larger dogfight-transports and large ships up to corvette max-armada goes beyond this...
hmm "star fleet" battles with a "sopwith" interface.. well sort of..... I personally like things in scale if i wanted out of scale ship battles with 360 degree firing arcs on everything i would just dig out my old Star fleet battles game.. or might try my hand at attack wing... does look cool though. but i am kind of worried that they might be splitting their time between this and X-wing... Hope not... The multiple shield aspect tracking is interesting...

Core sets are usually underpriced. I hate to think how much the expansions'll cost.
If this means the CR90 is the upper limit in ship size for X-wing, hooray.
Another question..... anyone else feel that this is what Attack Wing should have been?
Armada's CR-90 would be something like
Executor
. Now
that's
going to have a **** high price point.

Attack Wing shouldn't have been at all.

Very excited. Currently out of my price range, but I am very excited.
I'm sure work is already being done to find some way to merge these games in a campaign format!
I'd like more details about the movement system. I'll probably reread it in the morning though, and I wouldn't be surprised if FFG demo it in a video (which would be nice, I often find visuals help with demonstrating rules using tools like this). Nice that they've incorporated the idea of momentum for larger ships in a 2-D way that looks intuitive/doesn't need a hex grid, transparent film and grease pencils*.
I like the use of dials to track shields and a command stack as well.
Looks like they've found a good way to balance small and light ships against large and heavy ones.
I'll be watching this one closely!
*Winchell Chung, who writes the atomic rockets website, has a section of his homepage about space combat mechanics ( http://www.projectrho.com/game/coolgame.html ). It's worth checking out if you are a nerd for that kind of stuff. The 'command stack' system is very similar to another game I read about on that site.
EDIT: these are the games that sprung to mind:
Triplanetary: 2-D momentum movement: http://www.projectrho.com/game/triplanetary.html
Fifth Frontier: Command Stack idea: http://www.projectrho.com/game/fifthfrontierwar.html

Am I the only person upset by this news?
Yes.
Will they continue to support two miniature games?
Yes.
Moving swiftly on, a fleet-based game was widely requested stroke predicted on this forum... which begs the question, when will we see our Ground Assault game with AT-AT's, AT-ST's and Speeders?
I don't see this as much a miniature game as it is a "board game with minis"...it fills a couple of niches.
1: guys get their MASSIVE ships in a realistic scale.
2: Its strategical rather than tactical! A commander has a FLEET rather than a ship or squad!
They will support both and I bet there won't be a lot of additions to the Armada game...it will be a stand alone game, not a tournament based system like XWing. That actually seems silly and counter productive.
Lastly, I too figure a land based game isn't too far out now either. I'd guess it will be somewhere in between these two with individual vehicles and bases of troops.

Not sure I agree. I'm sure we'll see more Extended Universe ships. I'm sure we'll see more "Aces" packs. I'm sure we'll see more Epic scale ships. I'm sure we'll see ships that feature in the upcoming "Rebels" series. We may even still see that much talked about new faction...
And I'm sure that will be more than enough to take us through to the next Star Wars film... which will most likely deliver a plethora of new ships, new pilots and new enemies in it's own right...
At the end of the day, we're only 18 months or so into the games' life - there's plenty of places FFG can go with it yet.
Edited by FTS GeckoIm thinking they saw what WotC did with Star Trek and said, how can we make a capital game and not suck. Thus Armada was born.
This is great. No ships larger than the Corvette in Xwing, and I can play with capital ships in Armada. I figure the expansions will all be around 20-40 bucks, a bit more than xwing. Also unlike the xwing core, this game seems to have much more plastic in it. Remember the xwing core is those awful cardboard manuever templates and asteroids, and 3 little ships. This is 3 big ships, a bunch of strike fighter stands, and a manuever snake with clicks to set turns. Its much more stuff.
I cant wait. There goes a full day on the weekend though. Armada scale engagement with squadrons handled by xwing.
Reminds me of the time we spent a weekend playing Epic BFG 40k. Space battle handled in Battlefleet Gothic, followed by a massive Epic 40k battle for, with objectives captured at the 40k scale. We even thought about breaking out the Inquisitor, but no one had enough of those stupid models.
**** I spent way too much on GW.
