Explorator Background - is this 40k approved?

By El_Jairo, in Rogue Trader

Hi you all,

if have been lurking around here and I do appreciate this community a lot. There is so much background info on 40k you guys & gal's are sharing here. It is wonderful as I don't have much spare time for reading 40k novels, any books in fact.

Without further ado let me jump into the background I have been creating for my Explorator "Grugius".

I chose this Origin Path: Forge-World born, Scapegrace, Renegade-Free Thinker, Press-Ganged, Fortune, and came up with the following story.

Would you please be so kind to share your thoughts and feelings on this? Is it credible in the 40k universe?

Would IN have such dealings with Ad Mech?
Is a forge-world like this plausible or should it be more like the Lathe world, if the were famous for weapon building?

Grugius was born on Hongruar, a Forge-World, famous for it Thuder Hammers it produced and all utilities needed to manufacture weapons. From mining tools, to the transport ships that brought in the exotic ore for the metals.
Grugius himself wasn't so lucky that he could work any near the great machines which created those magnificent weapons. He lived on the outskirts where common hammer and tools where created to make ends meet. The scavenged for bits of junk, leftovers and spilled ore which they could melt down to make new, crude tools from.

There were some proper tech-priests around here, they were demoted to this zone as they didn't prove of any worth to the Fabricators proper Factorums. Here the needed to make sure that order was maintained, in some way and people served the Omnissiah properly.

In fact, for centuries the local Ad Mech powers had a deal with the Imperial Navy that the latter could "recruit" any needed tech-adepts and tech-priest for the subs, in reward for the convoy protection they supplied to the transport ships.

Rather than triaging through the losers and scum from the subs, the IN used a transport ship with a huge "claw", which grabbed any figure that looked like a tech-adept or priest. This device was designed a long time ago by the main Prime Enginseer, because he didn't wan't real competent Tech-Priests joining in his ranks, as he wanted to remain undisputed.

Because of this there were no volunteers to climb up in rank of the Ad Mech, you would become "blessed" with a bionic upgrade and where more easy to pick out by the IN.

Grugius, however, did volunteer but didn't choose any limb Binonics but rather an upgrade of his Calculus Logi and a MIU. Most Tech-Priest where laughing at him, because these upgraded wouldn't keep Grugius alive for a long time, they snarled at him.

But Grugius had a plan. He studied all the Manufacturom processes, so he knew exactly when he could pick up left-over ores and when the forge wasn't in use. Through his MIU he found out all this intel and this let him secretly create a multi-sectioned staff.

When he was in the open, he always made sure he had a 'companion' with him. In case the IN would come by to resupply, he would toss the hapless person to feed the claw, so he had time to cower away inside.

One his staff was finished, he waited for the day he could jump into the claw, jam his staff in he claw so he wouldn't get crushed, like all others.

This is how he got into the IN, from where he could talk his way into a deal with a Rogue Trader, short of some Ad Mech. The Prime Enginseer, was very keen on sending him off, as Grugius was intelligent enough to threaten his position. He was already gaining the support of a large portion of the Omnisiac Cogitator crew. As because of his augmentations, Grugius was very adapt in communicating with the Machini Spirit of the ship.

Hilarious. In all seriousness, though, only your GM can tell you what's okay and what isn't. Personally I don't see any need for The Claw - getting rid of the third-rate tech-priests first seems like exactly the sort of thing the Mechanicus would do anyway.

Origin Paths have always felt a little weird for me with Explorators, because the idea is that they're members of the Mechanicus who are sent to look for lost technology possibly because they're brilliant, possibly because they're insane, probably because they're politically inconvenient, but it all starts with them being fairly decently-ranked members of the Mechanicus. To me this has always assumed they'd be raised on a Forge World for this career very early, or possibly recruited later and mind-wiped into being a suitable priest, but that a lot of the options for an origin shouldn't really apply to them.

As a GM I would love a backstory like this and have no problem with it. I'll echo Magellan that it is a bit of a wacky bent, but as long as your GM gives it the okay then you can reshape the lore to fit your campaign.

There is nothing in the Lore that would prevent this kind of interpretation. It is a bit wacky and hilarious but 40k is all about "over the top" stuff so, why not? Check with your Gm first though!

We did make up this background story together with the GM and he typically approves over the top wacky stories. I was just a little unsure if this would be possible in the 40k universe.

I do agree with the fact that Explorators aren't generated through a typical origin path. I feel like they should be part of a deal between the Ad Mech and the RT anyway. But my Grugius is a little weird anyway because he is a free thinker and I want him to carve his own path. Ultimately I would like him to become a respected member of the Ad Mech and I would like to see what happens if he were to visit hongruar again

I have no problem with the Origin path. After all, The characters in RT are the ship's command crew! They are not newbies! As such, They will have life experiences beyond basic education. With a "distinct" background like yours, I would suggest working with the GM to come up with a "Path" that fits your story. Perhaps a non-linear path that fits your story. I can see a few that would seem to work!

I am currently working with this background and yet I am also interested in hearing your thoughts on a working origin path.

I would like to see what happens if he were to visit hongruar again

He could come out of it with a massively increased tech support staff if he brings a lot of quarters.
