NPC's and gear that break the rules?

By glewis2317, in Game Masters

One of my NPC's droids, has been modified to be allow him to use it as a vehicle. Drall inside an astromech. We're nearing the end of this "movie" and I've had a lot of fun ideas for this character. What it comes down to is I want this modified astromech droid to become Crawl the Drall's Battlemech.

Is it acceptable to fudge the rules if it makes for a great moment or more during the climatic finale of a campaign?

Absolutely. No question at all. Fun trumps rule minutiae always. Particularly at the end of all things....

Thanks. I'm gonna do it. I was just curious what everyone thought.

Well so far one out of one forum rats says go for it, so that's 100%................

Our group has a long tradition of characters with unusual modes of locomotion. So I'm going to use this, except with an ugnaught inside.

EDIT: Nope! Even better. A Squib.

Remember that the rules aren't all-encompassing- FFG didn't have the time (or pagespace!) to outline every possible thing that could take place in the Star Wars universe and write detailed mechanics for it. As long as you stick to the tone & style of the rules, people will appreciate the novelty.

(Well, unless they're old-school D&D players who grew up on games with terrible GMs where you're expected to pore through the Monster Manual to know exactly what you're facing or die horribly, but they are Playing Games Wrong)

That little ride-able droid was an inspired touch!

There was a late episode of The Clone Wars where a little droid on Kamino converted into a rideable speeder, that was pretty cool too.

Just curious, what rules were you fudging?

It sounds like you needed to create some stats, but I don't know any rules that you were necessarily going against.

NO! You must have strict adherence to the rules as written at ALL TIMES! Otherwise there will be chaos at your table, and anarchy reigning in the streets. It will surely be the end of days if you allow concepts like "fun" to start overriding the rules, as handed down to your feeble mind by the Almighty Development Team! This way lies madness!

I honestly haven't stated his ride out yet. The idea is that his droid ride, also functions as a independent droid, when Crawl is not in it. It's also armed to the teeth, with whatever I may think is cool depending on what's happening in the encounter. Shield generator. Jet pack.

I have an even bigger surprise with this NPC than just the toys in his mini-mech, but since one of my players is in here, I need to keep it to myself.

There's nothing in the rules that says that NPC's need to follow PC creation rules. When I create an NPC, I give them whatever stats I think are relevant and fitting. Same with skills and talents. I pay no attention to careers and specs except for inspiration.

Heck, half the time I'm making them up at the table. Oh, you're trying to Coerce him? I guess I need to figure out his Willpower and decide if he has Discipline now...
