Asteroids and Movement...when do you take dmg?

By shaner, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ok...we seem to have a disagreement going on in our area.

Situation...we need clarification for when you "hit" an asteroid and take dmg/lose action.

So I am approaching an asteroid. I do a sharp 2 movement. The template clears the asteroid but just barely. If I were to run the ship over the length of the template, then the base would clip/scrape the asteroid. However, at the end of the template my ship would clear the asteroid and not overlap it. Do I take damage? I say yes, but still get to shoot. Others say no...if the template clears, then you clear the obstacle.

Advice...rule reference. ..FAQ...Errata?

Thanks

The only things to be concerned with, is whether the template overlaps the asteroid, or if the final position of the ship overlaps. Don't worry about the path down the template getting there. So in your example, neither the template or the final position has overlapped the asteroid, so no damage.

Overlapping is on page 17.

Moving into and Through Obstacles page 20.

Ok Rick, I read page 20. It says "when a ship executes a maneuver in which either the template or the ship's base physically overlaps an obstacle token..."

It did not say ends it's movement overlapping the obstacle. Seeing as the ship base extends about 1/4" to either side of the template, I assumed that during the movement the base would physically overlap the obstacle.

Hmmmm...wish it were a little clearer...

I figure that your explanation is how it is done at tournaments Rick.

Thanks

Then read page 7 under executing a maneuver. You pick up the ship and place it at the end of the template. A ship doesn't slide along a template*, it is simply placed at the end.

* unless it overlaps another ship, in which case it will slide backwards along the template! but that is a special case

Also, a ship does not count as going off the table if it starts and ends entirely on the table, yet the template extended over the edge. See pg 17 FAQ 1st question under movement!

Shaner, check page 17 on overlapping. It's just the final position that counts.

Also - and this is actually important, and often causes confusion - you are never "hit" by the asteroid. In game terms you take damage, but you are not hit.

This means that game effects that kick in when you are "hit" does not apply. For example an Interceptor does not lose a stealth device by overlapping an asteroid, because the stealth device is discarded when you are "hit" - not when you take damage.

Awesome. ..thanks everyone.
