I have a dream...

No, not the one involving Orks . This one's about Somnium VIII. You know, the crazy planet.

I have need of Adamantium, and for some reason it's an "ore" on this world instead of being made from different ores as some sorta alloy, but that 's fine.

Only problem is that warp ghosts make everyone crazy after a day or so.

So what have you guys done to bypass said craziness?

I would remind myself that the loss of hundreds of crewmen is a small price to pay for even a small amount of adamantium.

Depends on your GM. You could send Servitors, but they can still be possessed by daemons, so that's no guaranteed fix.

I also recommend looking into lancing parts of the planet off from orbit, hauling it into space and mining it there.

I was actually thinking of sending down some Gellar Field-equipped mining facilities like the ones used on Lucin's Breath (sans GF). But I like the whole "lance it from orbit" plan better.

Question: since these xenos killed each other and were pretty advanced, would this not just give my GM grounds to come up with ghostships and so on?

No GM anywhere actually needs grounds to come up with ghostships. If your GM wants ghostships they'll happen. :)

I have no idea how these ghosts work, but if you were to activate a Gellar field down on the planet, it would become impossible for them to use the Phase trait within the field, which I assume would make them a lot easier to spot and set fire to.

I'm not sold on being able to just drop a Gellar Field inside of a mining construct and be done with it. They're clearly meant to integrate very carefully with a ship, rather than a personal bubble that you could carry around with you. Maybe it can be done, but it would require very carefully wiring it into the building you're dropping, and then you would need the power generation systems and hope that the carefully balanced components work in a planetary atmosphere instead of only in the Void/Hellscape of the Warp. Also that the impact of landing doesn't damage things.

I believe very firmly in science. Find as many null rods as you can and send a few miners down there to see if this helps stave off the madness. Send down many miners without null rods as control groups.

Alternatively leak to one of your rivals that pirates stole your Warrant of Trade, and made for Somnium and that you are looking to acquire some very expensive components slowly and secretly in order to reclaim it. Then watch as they frantically try a bunch of different options to try to claim your warrant, and see if any of them work. Kill their depleted, warp-maddened forces and mine the adamantium yourself.

Well, those are your rules - and that aside, I'm only suggesting a way to handle Phasing, which is only one of the possible problems presented by these ghosts. Not only that, but It's only an example. Any barrier at all that messes with space and/or warp stuff makes Phasing impossible. It doesn't specifically have to be a Gellar field generator.

Though if you did get a ship's Gellar field generator down there, you wouldn't really need to carry it around - it covers a significant amount of cubic kilometers. Besides, a man-portable version probably wouldn't have the range needed to prevent ambushes - Phase isn't really a combat trait anyway.

It might not be quick, but I believe that Null Rods ALSO cause madness, so even if they did work, it would be the same, irritating problem, just a different flavor. As for a power field, or a small Gellar field, i don't know if, in my head, that would work. Not sure what a good, manageable way to stop "ghosts" is.

Blow up the planet, and mining it's debris could work. However, I'm a devious GM, and would simply state the ghosts have now migrated to the debris field, and can infiltrate void ships nearby. But that is just me. :)

I'm starting to think that adamantium vein may be tainted already.

Are there any other canon systems near Footfall rich in the stuff? Our dynasty has/will have a source for it in the Heathen Stars.

I can't think of any canon sources of adamantium, BUT, just make up a GM-brew system with a planet with that delicious ore. Then plant Eldar in said system, and make the planet with said ore really dangerous.

But that's just how I do.

There're some interesting ores in the Slinnar Drift in Jerycho Reach. (Achilus Assault p. 56).

Yeah, we have plenty of non-canon material. I suppose some prospecting and surveying would be fun.

I think the Jericho Reach may be out of our range at the moment... But thanks, that's certainly good to know.

Can't you just find someone else mining it and then turn to piracy?

Piracy seems like a one-time deal. I'd rather conquer the mine the ore came from.

Well perhaps you're not applying the unofficial maxim of the Ankh Morpork guild of thieves well enough.

"Hit a man too hard and you can only hit him once; hit him just hard enough and you can rob him every week.”

"lance it from orbit"

It's the only way to be sure...
