Go not to the FFG forums for counsel, for they will say both no and yes.
Where should he go for counsel? This is where I would have asked.... I think he got some good answers and making his decision will be a lot easier now.

This is where to go but Raven1015 was making a joke referring to when Frodo was talking to Gildor about the counsel of elves.... ![]()
And yes he has now heard many opinions and can hopefully make a better decision when and if to jump back into this game.
Thanks for the tip everyone. I have reordered...for a 4th time...LotR. I will slowly recollect everything I imagine in the long run, but just wanted to jump in with HoN and VoI. I will play on EASY Mode with no Shadow Cards. I may only be playing half a game to some people, but like I said, I'm not a sadist gamer. I enjoy the experience and the adventure rather than the sabremetrics of deck building. I should be able to build whatever deck I want with Elenor and still have a chance to win!! haha.
Sounds great!
no shadow cards will definitely help and is a forgotten "easy" rule from the core rulebook.

This deck should make your life easier as well. Plus, you can tweak it with any cards from expansions. Good luck!
I might actually just get VoI. The more I read, the more it looks like I get more Story for my money.

If I may ask, why does the story matter? It's simply an insert that you read before and after you complete the quest - it changes nothing about how the game is played.
You seemed more concerned about difficulty of the game - and I'm not really seeing how having a story insert - or not - changes the calculus.
That, and the stories are not very....errr....deep.
They are a nice enough addition, but the game stays the same.
Now that you already ordered the core set, I might suggest you try 2 handed solo play?
I never did, but I guess you could synchronise 2 decks to work together and make the game easier still?
