The Namless Ones

By TheGreedyMerchant, in X-Wing

Has anyone had any success with the nameless phantom pilots?

I watched Theorist kick my but with two Sigma Squadron pilots and Whisper! Now, that was in the hands of an expert mind you, but those 4 attack dice are no joke.

Only really tried echo, and she made mince meat out of the rebels, someone else had an interesting idea to use the basic guys just as cheap jousters.

Not much in Regionals, little enough that I can quickly copy / paste it below:

Take note that none of those were US events, I am curious about the cultural differences in the meta.

I tried a 3 phantom list and found the generic ones just don't have the same impact that Echo or Whisper does, but mostly due to the low PS making ACD less effective.

Except for the Malmo event, there were no 3POs to be found. He might have made some of the difference in the US events.

Take note that none of those were US events, I am curious about the cultural differences in the meta.

One guy, the one that had Whisper + Stygium Particle Accelerator, apparently was confused about SPA vs. ACD somehow. He still did alright though, to make it into Top 8 out of 22.

I've flown 4 naked Sigma's which tear up Falcons.

I have run two Shadows each with ACD+Intl Agent and 3 Academies... did alright going 1-1.

I have also run two Shadows each with ACD + Recon and 2 Black Squad + VI... lost the only match with that one... did okay considering it was Lando +Luke+Outmanuver and 2 Rookie X-Wings.

Took the X-Wings out quick with only losing one Black squad but couldn't get the hits to take out Lando. Phantoms hate the 360!

I'm finding shadows surprisingly effective...

I have been having luck with the following list:

Whisper+ACD+VI

Shadow Squadron Pilot+ACD x 2

99 points.

Though last night the first 3 damage dealt to Whisper was from asteroids... My spatial acuity was way off.

Since the advanced sensors + SPA FAQ I've not used them. Not the same mobility or consistent. Damage output... Sad... It wasn't a broken combo an certainly no worse than named+ACD.

With systems and crew slots they'll prop ably perk back up someday.

I just got to try out the generic Phantom and I am honestly quite impressed with it. So much so that once the initial fervor over Echo and Whisper with the Advanced Cloaking Device has worn off, I expect to see easily as many or more Sigma Squadron Pilots as the unique pilots.

I'm not sure if it's going to replace my tournament list, but I just today ran two games with:

  • Sigma Phantom with a Stygium Particle Accelerator (27 points)
  • Bounty Hunter with a Recon Specialist and a Seismic Charge (38 points)
  • Onyx Defender with an Ion Cannon (35 points)

And I was really rather impressed. The Sigma hits like a brick, and the SPA saved my pilot in a few different rounds. Now, with only the four hit points and the two defense dice, I'm not expecting it to live very long, and I did what I could to only take a few safe shots (either at Range 3 or without fear of reprisal), but every time it shot it hit hard. I really liked the action efficiency of decloaking to gain an evade and then focusing for my attack, or shooting off and away to cloak up and still gaining an evade (four or five green dice with an evade token is practically a cement wall, as the Interceptor pilots can tell you, although they're not something to rely on overmuch!). Not having to decloak every single turn was actually pretty nice, because I found it made my actions less predictable; I didn't have to fit that 2-straight template in somewhere every round, and that usually gave me more options in with the asteroids, but that's probably personal preference more than anything (same goes for moving everyone at PS3, another preference of mine, although I've been thinking of dropping the Seismic Charge and demoting the Onyx to a Delta to fit in a Heavy Cannon, but that's neither here nor there).

My favorite ships is easily the Defender, although the ship I'm best at flying is the Firespray; the Sigma Phantom may be encroaching on both of them! I can't say for using more than one of them, but I highly recommend trying to add in a Sigma pilot with the SPA to your preferred lists (possibly in the place of a shuttle or an expensive Interceptor). Give it a shot! Once you wrap your head around the movement and action economy, I really think it's one of the best ships in the game right now, and I think it's going to catch on pretty quickly.

I also typically run Whisper VI ACD and 2x Shadow ACD for 99 pts. I find it to be highly effective.

You can see me piloting them in two games (once very poorly and once very well) Here: http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/112387-battle-for-the-best-wave-4-ship-pure-tie-phantom-list-squares-off-against-tala-z-95s-twice-2-reports-3mb/

I really enjoy this list but it does suffer against certain builds and it feels like i'm putting all my eggs in one basket, and that is ACD.
