Storage Solution

By Lagomorphia, in X-Wing

Given my X-wing set is the only set around here and everyone uses it, I've ended up with a lot of stuff over the past two years. The two core boxes used to be sufficient but 'round about when I got the GR-75 it started to struggle: one of the Royal Guard Interceptors got its wing snapped off and I figured this wasn't going to cut it any more. So, a few months later, I ask the forum and its many experts, what are good (and hopefully relatively cheap) storage solutions for large amounts of X-wing?

The full list

6x X-wing

2x Y-wing

3x A-wing (post RA, currently 2)

3x B-wing (post RA, currently 2)

1x Millenium Falcon

2x HWK-290

1x E-wing

2x Z-95 Headhunter

6x TIE fighter

6x TIE interceptor

2x TIE advanced

2x TIE defender

2x TIE bomber

2x TIE phantom

2x Firespray-31

1x Lambda-class shuttle

1x GR-75
1x CR90

Intending to get a Decimator and an Outrider too, so hopefully would like space for them.

That's 40ish small bases, four large bases (six with Wave 5) and two huges.

Can't go wrong with Plano tackle boxes from Wal-Mart. Cheap and they fit everything almost perfectly. Here is what I use at the moment, and you see my ship list. Everything fits, even the Rebel transport.

Plano cases work for small and large ships. You will need to be a toolbox sized container to hold something as big as the Tantive.

It is getting difficult to store my collection as well, but a plano bag with 5 cases worked for taking in Wave 4.

UK though. We don't have Walmarts.

Fair enough, GR-75 and CR90 probably need their own packaging anyway.

well technically if you can get the plano 1374, the top open compartment will hold both the Vette and Transport... Though you would want to fashion foam or the bubble they came in to ensure they don't slide around.

That case also comes with 4 trays which will fit your collection but there isn't much room for expansion if any.

Can't go wrong with Battlefoam.

any tackle box of any sort you can easily mod them to fit my dad made one for me its a small case will hold roughly 25 small ships and 2 large bases and he uses foam he cuts to pad the ships so nothing bad will happen to them in the event of the tackle box for whatever reason being smashed around

Small ships: original insert package (just the interior 2 piece-shell). Arrange in bulk in plastic storage flats or shoe boxes

Medium ships: original insert package. Same as small.

Large: I haven't figured this out yet, leaving in the box for now.

EDIT: additionally I re-use many of the tins that cookies (biscuits for you folks on the other side of the pond :D) come in.

As I am in the process of magnetizing some of the minis the tins work quite well.

I don't have the original inserts, have gathered this bunch over the last two years so a few even have repairs to the minis (most recent was a TIE bomber that got sent flying somehow).

Some really nice suggestions coming up. I've seen some of this battlefoam stuff but it doesn't seem to take very many ships.

WHAT!?!?!? you guys dont have walmarts in the UK? I thought walmart was as common as mcdonalds all around the world...

Walmart owns Asda, which is one of our big supermarkets, but Asda mostly operates like a supermarket rather than an everything store.

This probably isn't the right thread lol... But I have purchased BF bags in the past; but that was before I found out that the owner of the company is a royal douchebag, like King James royal... Soooooo I would pass on the BF stuff.

And before anyone freaks out lol... just Google Romeo and Battlefoam, I'm sure you will find enough info to support this...

Oh battlefoam can go very wrong... Especially in the wallet area. >_< lol

The Plano cases are pretty much the standard for the game right now. The bigger your collection, the bigger the box, or in some folks cases, boxes!

Any recommendations on a particular box?

Amazon carries the Plano cases too, don't know what shipping would look like in the end but you could give that a try.

I have even more ships than the OP, my solution was to buy a PACK 720, buy a hot wire foam cutter and foam sheets, and I'll cut my own custom foam. It's all still sitting in my closet at the moment.

In the UK, KR Multicase works out pretty cheap. You'd probably need two though. (I'm on my third with the big ships added, but I have room for wave 5, and a little more).

They aren't to everyone's taste, but I'm fond of mine, and nothing broken yet!

The 1374 is what i have and it is AWESOME! Great for X-wing.

The 1374 is great. I use it to store my tokens, ship dials, cards, etc.

Any office supply store usually has a sizable section of various storage containers. Many of them being sized for stationary, pencils, erasers, are about perfect for the various ships and odds and ends. However it can get quite spendy which is why I didn't suggest it.

Yeah I like it too but with 50 ships and the huge ships I am running out of room.

Like you I got the BattleFoam 720. Has more usable space, but I really really like the plano trays, they are solid by themselves. The pluck foam I got from BattleFoam is not nearly as sturdy when say grabbing one side. Not the mention you have to practically unzip the whole thing to get to the lower trays... the plano was just handier.

But you can go broke

Yeah I hear you... I'm about to fill up a Plano 1374 with just the tokens / cards / dials, and the PACK 720 with ships (6 layers, including Epic). I will need to get more after wave 5 comes out. The PACK 720 case just by itself is $100. But I bought enough foam that I could probably fill 2-3 PACK 720's worth. Between the foam sheets and foam cutter I probably spent 30% - 50% more than I would have on custom foam to fill a PACK 720, but now I have all the foam that I need going forward.
