Storage Solution

By Lagomorphia, in X-Wing

I went battlefoam myself, a few premade trays and a few custom ones with their custom tray tool. I personally think this is the best option. I have looked at the plano cases and pictures people have posted about them. I love how well they work for cards, dials, bases, etc... But I do not in any way like the way ships are stored in them. Except for the few times I have seen pics of people customizing foam in the cases. Sure battlefoam costs a pretty penny, but I feel it is worth it. If you are willing to invest all that money in those game pieces you should be willing to spend what it takes to protect them properly. It amazes me that people can spend a grand on ships but are not willing to spend $100-$200 on nice custom storage.

Can't go wrong with Battlefoam.

This probably isn't the right thread lol... But I have purchased BF bags in the past; but that was before I found out that the owner of the company is a royal douchebag, like King James royal... Soooooo I would pass on the BF stuff.

And before anyone freaks out lol... just Google Romeo and Battlefoam, I'm sure you will find enough info to support this...

Yeah I have met the guy. He is a donkey to put it nicely. I refused to by BF products in the past because of it.

And the funny thing... I'm not usually like that; for example if the CEO of Coca Cola was a royal a$$ hat... I'd still have a coke because I enjoy it haha. But the dude from BF is a giant a-hole and irritated me enough just by his actions to never want to purchase from them again.

I totally agree. I think it is worth it. But if others don't agree, that's fine with me too. To each is their own they say.

Can't go wrong with Battlefoam.

My stressed and crited wallet with 6 direct hits says otherwise.

I use plano, nothing wrong but BF IMHO Planos are significantly cheaper and I'd rather just get more ships.

I would love to share pics of my storage solution with you guys, but I always seem to have trouble posting pictures to this forum. Does any one else have that problem?

Yeah it is probably my OCD over everything that makes me have to have battlefoam. I drive my wife crazy with how I have to have everything perfectly organized with the most expensive organization system possible. Even my stupid laptop bag, could I settle with a decent one from bestbuy or Walmart, nooooo. I had to go out and buy a $250 leather one, which meant I went without a laptop bag for 8 months to save the money.

I think I may have a problem...

I use six Plano trays, two each for Rebels and Imperials, one for tokens and templates and one for the Huge ship accessories (which also holds the GR-75). I carry them in a Wal-Mart duffel bag that is long enough to put two stacks of three trays end-to-end, with my rule/pilot/upgrade binders on top of one stack, and the shoebox with my CR-90 on top of the other.

Works great, but its getting heavy...

I just ported my collection from a Plano 1634 to a Plano 732. The 732 has a wider base, and is thus more stable (the 1634 had a habit of toppling over in the trunk of the car), and holds a lot more space. I even have the rebel transport in one of the trays, until it's space will be claimed by a YT-2400 once they're out. And since my tokens are still in a 3650 tray, I can use the old case for tournaments when I don't need to bring every ship, card, and base I own.

Finally!! Here's my storage solution. You'd be surprised what you can do with a Plano box, some shipping material, an

X-Acto knife, and a little time.WP_20140807_19_07_46_Pro_zpsd72d96a3.jpgWP_20140807_19_08_11_Pro_zps9814c367.jpgWP_20140807_19_21_27_Pro_zps96c0f78c.jpgSome of the TIE foam needs to be redone. I've just got to sit down and do it.

Is it wrong that my natural reaction to seeing all of those X-Wing lined up nice and pretty is to grab my TIE Bombers and bomb the sh*t out of them lol?

Can't go wrong with Plano tackle boxes from Wal-Mart. Cheap and they fit everything almost perfectly. Here is what I use at the moment, and you see my ship list. Everything fits, even the Rebel transport.

I use this case, and it holds everything very nicely. Room for the transport and corvette and two of each big ship on top of all my dials, tokens, templates and bases. Plano designed the back to have a mesh pocket for large objects but it looks like they never added it in. Either that or the Walmart ones didn't get them. I put a small bungee net on it and it holds the binder I keep my cards in perfectly. It should have room for two of each wave 5 ship as well.

I'm thinking of giving Feldherr a go.

Where did you get your foam ar? That's the style I've been looking for for my case but I can't seem to find it.

Where I work, we ordered a bunch of hard drives and they came packed in this foam. I'm not even sure what it's called.

You can usually get the yellow kind of egg crate foam at fabric stores like Hancock and Jo Ann' it is usuallysold by those stores for people reupholstering furniture.

I put a small bungee net on it and it holds the binder I keep my cards in perfectly. It should have room for two of each wave 5 ship as well.

Pray tell, where did you find such a beast? I moved my stuff into a 732 a few days ago, and this would simplify life for me. I currently keep all my small cards, except for the damage decks, in a coupon wallet, and this would allow me to keep the wallet in the net, opening space for the incoming transport. Of course, streamlining my current storage system for tokens will also help. Plastic baby food containers, and a couple of clinical specimen cups. Don't worry, the seals weren't broken until I put the tokens in. ;) Thanks.

I wanted to add my new system to the list as well. Hopefully it will help someone with their issues. So I dug up this thread up instead of starting another storage one.

I used to use the double-sided plano box (3952) and overall I was very happy with it. It was able to fit a ton of stuff in a compact space. In fact, it was able to every thing you'll see here in it (plus another bomber & one set of the upcoming rebel aces) except for the playmat & the huge ship movement templates.

There was one main reason I decided to find something else: I wanted to reduce the set up time. Flipping the plano over constantly really started to get on my nerves. I decided my next storage solution would be able to house the majority of the ships on their bases in order to speed up set up to get more games in. So here is what i came up with.

I had been looking at these cases from Harbor Freight for awhile. I got a good coupon for it and pulled the trigger. I used 2" pluck foam ordered from the Foam Factory. Each tray has a quarter inch layer of foam glued to the bottom.

Here is the ship case. This was my first attempt at making a storage trays. Somehow I measured wrong and had one row of foam too much. That is why one side one each is a little wonky. Luckily I was able to take it off with out messing up the settings. Protip: Do not use super glue to fix errors. I learned a lot from this go around.

There is some inefficient use of space that will be changed for the next set of trays I make. It has really helped with the set up. The next batch will also house wave 5 and Rebel Aces.

Here is the box with all of the bits.

The last picture is just the "layer" underneath so you can see what is in it. The dividers are the ones that came with the case. Behind where the movement templates are stored, I have a folder with the rules, cheat sheets, etc. This case has all of the mission tokens & extra tokens that I could get rid of if I need the space. That mega pcc box in the middle houses all of the upgrade cards although I think I will eventually get some type of small binder for those.

I also bought a third case that I use for the huge ships but I usually don't travel with those so I didn't include it. It should hold the Imperial huge ships too as long as they are not crazy big. If you want to see it I can post it as well.

All together, I've spent about $75. That includes 3 cases and enough foam for 6 trays with bottoms. I bought extra foam to make the shipping worth while and in anticipation of expansions. Also in case I royally messed one up :) . Obviously this is not something you would not want to bring to a tournament but I only play casually. I also do not mind carrying around two cases. I am very happy with how it turned out.

Anyway, sorry for the long post but I hope this helps somebody out. Let me know if you have any questions.

To the OP...

While I think the Plano 1374 is an awesome rig that can fit a large collection and everything, your collection is similar to mine and the end was drawing near as the new wave came out and more on the horizon.

I bought a BattleFoam 720 with some pluck foam. While setting it up, it certainly was bigger and a little bit more efficient there were some other issues. The foam was pretty bad for cards and cits, the dials and square bits were ok but any accessory try seemed really flimsy, had to use 2 hands to pick up, chits slide under the foam wall etc.. The bag doesn't have any nice pockets, there are a couple of big ones but they are thin, the ultra pro card holders people use stretched them out. You can add smaller pockets at a charge of 20-30 bucks. With Imperial huge coming up not sure if you can fit all Huge in a single pack 3" tray... etc Even then I was looking at not having everything in on place like extra cards and chits etc.

Basically BattleFoam could work but seemed way more suited to a mini-centric game where as X-wings has tons of cards chits etc.

If anyone in MN wants a Battlefoam 720 pretty much unused and some already plucked foam for $50 let me know.

I ended up getting a bigger tackle bag, that holds 8 plano 3700 series trays (same as the 1374).

I found one for pretty cheap with trays at my local fleet store: http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/-magnum-softsided-tackle-bag/0000000002349

Immediately I like it better then battlefoam. Mostly because of the plano trays.

I have on order 2 plano 3700 series 3" open trays for my rebel/imperial huge ships (this will replace 3 of the 2" trays the come with the bag). My collection similar to yours...

I know have...

2 3750 plano trays for each faction (3750s are really nice because they have a large area for large ships like the falcon, shuttle and slave).

1 3" 3700 tray for each faction HUGE ships, do have to get some foam to store them since the 3" tray is completely open.

1 3750 tray for rulers, cards, tokens, asteroids etc

Baggies where I keep chits for the missions if I want to play them, extra mission chits, extra cards, play mats EVERYTHING fits in the pockets.

The plano trays are great if you don't have to have your models in individual foam, they are changeable and nice and stiff so you can hand whole trays to people. I highly suggest using them in some fashion.

I started with 2 Plano deep 3700 boxes, 1 for Rebels and 1 for Imperials. These worked very well until I picked up multiple wave 4 ships and eying wave 5. I moved stuff around then started taking out some stuff. Each box carried a set of maneuver templates, that sides dials & cards. I pushed the asteroid, bomb and misc tokens into a smaller box.

I bagged stuff for each side to carry now:

10 of each of evade, stress, ion & focus tokens

20 shield tokens for Rebels, 15 for Imperials

5 or 6 TL sets

2 sets of number tokens like 1-10 and then 20-29

I carry about 10 stands/bases per side + 4 more that have the ship tokens stacked onto them and a rule book just in case.

All this is now in a Plano 1374 fishing tackle box. It's pretty big but the huge top compartment can hold the Corvette and, if I had one, a transport, with ease. I got the box just today and spent an hour figuring out how to set spaces up to hold stuff. I may get a deck card box to hold the pilot cards and put the in the top with the Corvette but atm, they're divided into to Rebs and Imps each in their own space in one of the boxes that comes with the 1374. 1 box is Rebs, 1 Imps, 1 for stands, dials, pilot cards and ship tokens and the last has tokens, templates, asteroids, Corvette bitz.

All my dupe unique cards(with the dot next to the name) along with another 10+ bases, a handful of dupe ship tokens, a huge bag of extra TL sets, stress, evade, etc...tokens, 2nd set of maneuver templates and asteroids and large ship/aces pamphlets tucked back into a core set box. Doing this will save you space plus keep some dupes safe in case you loses something.

This is a few months prior to wave four.

Showing how nice and orderly die cut foam can be.

Even though you roll the boxes around, all the tokens, dice, cards, maneuver templates and dials, stay in place.

Found this on the Holocron net:

pic2059190_lg.jpg

I am using a mix.

For the tokens I use a tackle box (but with the amount of tokens it gets pretty filled up now)

For the Pilots Ultra Pro binders which look quit nice to display the cards (and they fit in sleeved)

For the Upgrade cards there are 2 business card folders (one for each faction)

and for the ships there is the Feldherr Case which works pretty well but will be too full now with Wave 5 and my urge to get 2 Decimators. Ill have to rethink that soon, probably will get a second one or a bigger one.

My big ships are on the shelf with my blue rays currently. Maybe Ill get a bigger Feldherr case for the big ships and the decimator.
