Stress & Fire-Control System

By JohnBoo, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This came up last night & I was pretty sure a stressed ship still got to acquire a target lock, since you werent performing an action.

But after we re-read the "acquire target lock" in the rulebook (p.9) we werent so certain. We played it as the ship wasnt able to since it was stressed.

Which way was correct?

You were initially correct, for exactly the correct reason. Stress only affects performing actions (and red maneuvers), if the card/ability has the word "action" then stress will prevent using it. Otherwise you can acquire or receive tokens and other abilities.

I understand the confusion. But you would gain the target lock from FCS.

There is a very small difference between acquiring a target lock, and performing the Action Acquire a target lock. Stress prevents you from performing the action, but nothing can prevent you from acquiring a target lock through other game effects.

Great, thank you so much for the replies!

In the end Corran owned & didn't need the TL anyway.

5 new guys hammering out rules without a seasoned vet player is a slow process. But our group is getting better, slowly but surely.

Also, be aware that while you ship is stressed it can't receive "free" actions from another source, like those from Squad Leader. That's been a trap for new players, as they assume it's a free action, so they can take it. Refer the Stress rules, page 17.

You can receive tokens like the focus from Garven when you're stressed, it's only actions you can't receive or perform.
