Star Wars continuity and the RPG

By newbiedm, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I think they are really going to shake things up with these new movies in regards to the story post Endor and a lot of assumptions about how things played out. I think that's a big motivation in this canon purge as it allows them to make all aspects new and fresh. Even the parts I like of the EU I'm really not interested is seeing covered verbatim. Something old and something new is nice.

Doesn't Mark Hamill do the Joker in some Batman animated thing? And everyone seems to love him for it? He must have some phat villain cred... I'm just sayin'.

He did the Joker for years in the animated series and cartoon movies, some of the games as well I believe.

Yeah, Rebels is going to have the ISB and an Inquisitor. Both, I believe, were things created by WEG for the old D6 RPG.

Inquisitors were mentioned in the radio drama from 1981 so they predate WEG. However, I doubt the guys doing Rebels know that.

I'm sorry, you are incorrect. there are no mention of them in the Radio Dramas. The Imperial Inquisitors are a creation WEG, and first talked about in the 1987 WEG Star Wars Sourcebook, and heavily expanded upon in Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments of the Rim. Please do not state erroneous ideas as facts. So yes you are correct, I'm pretty sure the guys doing Rebels don't know...Do you know anything about the guys doing Rebels? Um, Dave Filoni can pretty much blow about any of us out of the water with his SW knowledge and Fandom, not to mention he is the supervising director of both The Clone Wars and Rebels. So while we play make believe every now and again, he is doing it for real, and making mad cash while living most our of our dreams.

The news paper comics from the 80's by Russ Manning did have the Blackhole and the Shadow Stormtroopers. He could be thought of a precursor to the idea of the Imperial Inquisitors.

Yes Mark Hamill has been the voice of the Joker for a long time now in the animated series and a ton of the Video games. He did not do the latest Batman game, nor did the normal voice actor for Batman. They went with younger actors as the game was a a prequel of sorts. He has been a prolific voice actor for decades now.

Wait! Am I given to understand Star Wars is now fiction of some kind. I'm more worried the new films will suck than I am that Han and Leia will not produce Darth Caedus for the movies

To put it as simple as possible: the "Legends" doesn't mean it's "nuked" from canon, it only means that it's canon status is uncertain until it is referenced or contradicted in any future published stories, be it film, tv-series, comics, novels etc. If it isn't referenced it can both be canon and not, at least for your games. Anything Legends is potentially canon, Legends is being used as inspiration for the new stories we're getting, but it is no longer holy or untouchable, which is a good thing I think.

Sounds like Schrodinger's Star Wars to me. It is both alive and dead until someone opens the book/movie.

What Disney does or doesnt do with canon is irrelevant to us - at least as far as the game goes. There is only one source of canon at the table:

If I want Thrawn to exist while simutaniously throwing Admiral Daala under the bus, then it is so. If the only movie that exists in my game universe is the Holiday Special - well, I am a horrifying indiviual - but that's the way I roll. And George or Disney or FFG or whomever has no say.

(Although if Judge Dredd showed up and started dictating canon, I might give him some serious consideration. . . )

I never broke the RAW! I am the RAW!

RRAAAAWW!

I for one am a fan of the whole rewrite of the cannon post movies. I felt the Star wars lore lost its way compeltly with Jedi Academy... some of that stuff was simply stupid.

Yah, it in no way has bearing on what goes on at people's tables. We are making canon when we play as technically the stories we tell are all new fan fiction moving forward.

Not my stories, they are all canon for EVERYONE!!!

:)

This Legends/Canon thing was mostly for Disney to simultaneously demonstrate ownership and control of the IP while also freeing themselves of being held to any boundaries in regards to the direction of the story.

I'm pretending it's solely so they can unthrow a moon at Chewie.
