Creating New Devices as a Technician

By toonytoon180, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

My character is a Technician with specs in Slicing and Outlaw Tech and I want to be able to create a new device that does not previously exist in the game. How would I go about doing this, if I have what would be all of the necessary components? Ex. Wireless Security Camera: fashioned from an Optical Sensor (from a droid), A Wireless Transmitter (from a comlink), a power source of some kind, scrap metal, scrap electronics, and an interface on my end with a wireless reciever attached.

Thanks!

Sounds like what you need is a thumbs up from your GM and some dice.....

Tinkerer talent lets you add hardpoints, presumably to armor and weapons, but with GM permission you could add them to any item...

Scope out the Cam Droid from Suns of Fortune, that may be modifiable the way you want.

Baring that notion, I'd use the recorder from a Holomessenger (EotE p171) slaved to an Encoded Comlink (Comlink EotE p171 and Encryption Module, 1250c 6r, Suns of Fortune p100).

Say Hard difficulty Mechanics or Computers to setup it up as a device. Use Stealth or Skullduggery to plant it where it can get the best picture and not be easily found.

It doesn't sound like he designed anything that will break the game. I say just assign some attributes to the device and let him enjoy the fruits of his ingenuity.

Sounds like a lot of fun. If you wanna really get into it, I'd recommend the GM calculate the approximate cost and rarity of such a thing, make sure the the player has the items on hand or pays for them, and then makes the Mechanics check with a difficulty similar to what you'd roll for a Negotiation/Streetwise check to obtain such an item from merchant-type sources.

Or, y'know, just make up a number and roll some dice.

Here's hoping the Technician splatbook delves into the invention portion of Inventor.

We have no idea what Q4 holds. We probably will by this time next week though.

After next week, half of the EotE career sourcebooks will be out. Exciting!
