Unique dice roll and marked dice. What is going on here?

By Chchcherry, in X-Wing

My take on this topic is this. If dice were so important in whether you win or lose at X-Wing, Paul Heaver would have to be the biggest dice cheat in the World (Three times at that!). So If you're counting on your dice to win you a game, go home you've already lost. I'm no different than any other X-Wing player. I curse dice every time they don't go my way. I tend to complain about my opponents good fortune more than anything. When the dust settles and I look back at a game I lost, I always find something I did wrong with my list build, obstacle deployment, ship deployment, initial movement or some other aspect of the game. Stop blaming dice for losses and fix the real problem. I like this quote from Rounders Why does this still seem like gambling to you? I mean, why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table of the World Series of Poker EVERY SINGLE YEAR? What--are they the luckiest guys in Las Vegas?

And to necro'd a year and a half old post why? I can't imagine this being on any less than page 100.

There are all kinds of dice-rolling superstitions out there. They aren't necessarily cheating just because they look silly.

The only thing that bothers me here is that he set all dice facing up and on a line. Given that starting point, it could well be that he is trying to spin them more or less with the same force, so that they would flip a few times and possibly land facing the same way.

In any case, if I was playing him I would simply ask that both of us used the same set of dice. Problem solved.

This is why you call the TO over ASAP before you end up with a cheater at the top table. Someone cheating to the top table only to get a slap on the wrist once they get there has already won.

Don't hesitate to call TO's over. If they give you **** they're either actually cheating or they're not and just being unreasonable. In either case they must be made to squirm.

When they get huffy tell them to, "Fly casual, bro." and get the TO on them.

TL:DR the entire thread.

I wrote a much longer post but then realized this thread was 18 months old. Move along.

Regardless, it could happen again (or has). The subject hasn't aged.

If you happen to roll dice the exact same way on the same exact surface every time, you WILL roll the same dice results every time.

Think about it in Physica terms. We are able to predict very accurately how far an object will travel through air when thrown at a certain angle and with a certain force. We are able to model this with an equation based on certain parameters.

There is no reason that we shouldn't be able to do the same with predicting what face of a dice turns up.

That being said, we obviously can't control our hands and surfaces well enough to do this. But, it does stand to reason that if you use the same rolling method every time, then you WILL increase your odds of rolling consistently by purposely taking out some of the possible randomness that our hands create. It may also just happen to be that consistent placement in your hand has the greatest effect in reducing randomness.

I'm not saying one way or the other what we should enforce, but at some point maybe the game should have more randomness enforced in some way, maybe. New dice assigned in new big tournies? Being forced to never roll the same way twice? Idk, all seems too much for a casual game to me, maybe.

Probably the easiest way to ensure a fair roll with the game format the way it is played now is to either use the FFG dice app or a dice cup with a trip lip. A smooth lipped dice cup would only make the problem worse.

I have a back dot on my dice because they always seem to get mixed up with my opponent. I mark my astoroids too. They are all the same, I just kept coming home with fewer dice than I left with. I never thought about it being some sort of cheating thing. Maybe I ought to scrub off the dots and just keep buying more dice.

Yup... That's a cheat roll. Same technique for d6 and spin-down d20.

To put in perspective, is a well enough known technique he would be banned from our store for at least a period of time. Certainly ejected from one of my tourneys if I'm TO and see this. Particularly with the marks on them. Obvious much? There are some who get away with this by just being very good at misdirection though and that's when it gets hard to call.

Is the dice app widely used and accepted as an actual dice replacement by those here? I've never actually seen anyone use it.

It burns through too much battery life and while I would say it is user friendly, it's not as efficient as just having dice out. Have to press too many things to go through a single attack. Hell of a lot of fun though.

Flipping your hand isn't rolling. This generation, I swear to gucking fog.

Zero evidence of cheating in the video. He rolls an evade, focus and blank. The focus rolls forever. They all spin in the air. The dice that moves the least after bouncing (i.e the one you could be the most suspicious about) rolls a blank. His hand moves quite dramatically out of shot straight up. Hardly the action you want if you want to softly roll a dice onto specific edge.

They start in his hand evade, focus and evade. You can't even see if the marked sides start up when he rolls. The focus wasn't marked in the photo which means most likely one of the dice was in an unknown position in relation to the mark. Basically irrelevant based on how much they move in the air and bounce (except the blank) afterwords.

Rolling dice in your hand to get specific face up before rolling sounds far fetched. You could be shaking them in your hand for ages. 8x8x8.

Video has no sound. Zero discussion of lists he played against. Original poster posted once and never returned.

Marking the dice has nothing to do with cheating, unless the mark makes the dice unbalanced.

Sounded way worse in text.

When k saw the video, that guy isn't cheating. No way he could influence a dice roll like that.

Star Wars is a.hot money maker this year and next for obvious reasons. Can't imagine why any company with a license wouldn't take advantage of that.

In the video the guy was not cheating, his dice were rolled aggressively.

There are people who "can't loose" meaning if they loose its because the other party cheated or did something unfair. In another game I used to play I consistently would beat the TO, this was impossible and I must be cheating so he forced me to use a set of dice he provided. After using his dice and still beating him, he just opted to never play against me and generally try to make my experience as bad as possible because I was cheating somehow.

Guess what sometimes someone is just better then you or on a hot streak or you are having a bad day. Don't jump to accusing people of cheating.
