One of those moments of oh crap.

By Dagger Squadron, in X-Wing

Last night I was getting a rematch in against one of the local guys. After a few rounds of manuevers and me scoring one kill I found Rexler Brath facing off with a knave Squadron pilot from about 4 mm.

Rexler opens up, 4 blanks. Predator reroll. Still blanks. Target Lock reroll. Nothin.

My opponent and I just sit there and laugh.

The rest of shooting goes on then the knave Squadron pilot shoots. Natural 3 hits 1 crit, flip the the crit and it's a Direct Hit!

Rexler almost got one shotted by a rookie! That was a good game.

You cant use both a target lock and predator, cant re-roll a re-roll.

And people say the Dice Gods don't play fast and loose with our gaming lives!

Yeah, I've seen similar things happen, and it does sometimes come down to luck. I had a similar experience using an Interceptor at range 3, behind an asteroid, with stealth device and a hull upgrade. Came up 5 blanks, and my opponent one shotted me. Hate to see that happen, but it does.

hahaha.

A lot of people complain about dice, but for me those are the best moments.

You don't stand up and laugh or have those epic moments of emotion from pure technical skill. It's when things are out of your hands and up to the fate of the dice that things are truly exciting and unpredictable.

I love dice in my games.

Ahh. My bad.

It was a close game. After that point I had 4 of 5 ships with only a shot on the E Wing and he finally couldn't jinks his way out of it. Ended the match with Rexler, Howlrunner, and 2 Academy Pilots. All of them had one health left except for one academy who was unscathed.

But you could reroll 1 with Predator and the other 3 with TL. Not sure why you would, but you could.

I had a game last night where I think I set a personal record for blanks rolled on offense.

All my ships had predator, and usually I had a focus to go with it. However I only had two attacks all games where I didn't roll any blanks I think, and most of my attacks rolled 2 or more blanks, including one where i rolled 3 blanks out of 4 dice on a crucial roll to kill a ship (got a second hit on the reroll but wasn't enough to kill).

And as anyone who has played with predator knows, rolling multiple blanks really sucks since you can only reroll one against most ships.

Those blanks cost me the game, and it didn't help that my opponent was rolling above average evades either.

I just had the worst time the other night. I had my whisper at range one on Han and I rolled 5 blanks! Next turn I have Corran in sight 4 blanks. It was so crazy we just had to laugh about it.

The guy I played against doesnt like to use named pilots. the first time we played his named pilots did zero damage and got smoked but his rookies made a few kills and were the only effective units on his side. So now we always make fun of the named guys and in particular I use 37 to mark on of my Academy Ties and he never does anything in a game. He usually misses his shot and does not eveade hits.

Its just one of those things.

hahaha.

There have been a couple of close shaves that have set both myself and my opponent to laughing maniacally without the intervention of dice of any kind. But the uncertainty of dice not only raises the excitement level, it can also raise the skill level. Not in terms of strategy per se, but in forcing judgment calls and requiring the player to adapt to unpredicted (and sometimes unpredictable) outcomes.

The odds of rolling for blanks is crazy low. LOL

Last week, on the first turn of a 300 vs. 300 Epic Game, my team mate took a range 4 pot shot *with the Corvette* at a cloaked echo 4 Attack Dice vs. 6 Defense. One Shotted.

Edit: inserted 'with the Corvette' for clarity

I recently had a Dagger Squadron B-wing with HLC and FCS, with one hull remaining, survive five TIE Fighters shoot at him in a row. The TIEs never got more than one hit, but every single one got in a single hit...and against every hit, I rolled a natural evade. My opponent laughed about it every single time after the second evade. When my opponent declared his sixth and last TIE would be shooting the same B-wing, I even cracked a joke that if this one turned up evade, I'd go grab the glass of water myself (to test the die's fairness). It came up a Focus, which, luckily, I still had on me...

Those same B-wings (same as above, but two of them), earlier in that game, couldn't blow up a single Obsidian Squadron TIE Fighter over two turns, despite having Focus for the first shots and Target Locks for the second...

Exceedingly fickle, the dice gods are...

With that many blanks you can (but only ....edited: what Bohrdumb said)

but it is amazing how often it happens :P

He could have used his predator reroll on 1(2) dice then not getting the hits he desired choose to spend the TL to reroll the remaining (and not reroll a reroll).

I'm pretty sure this is legal, I don't believe you have to declare if you will use your target lock until after you use predator (once again not rerolling the dice you already rerolled but the other ones), because both things occur in the modify attack dice step.

I did do it wrong and re rolled the reroll but it was all blanks anyway.
