Any issue with always being the winner? (Flyin' Casual)
Bring your A game. Don't throw games, and don't deny the rest of your store the chance to fight a worthy opponent.
If you win several in a row, maybe work on finding or cultivating a more competitive meta, but don't stop playing on the off chance that your local players are going to be poor sports about it.
Edited by WickedGreyIf you're winning by a huge margin and it wasn't just because of dice luck maybe you should take a weaker list? Play those bad ships/upgrades that nobody ever uses, that way even if you do win again it hopefully won't be by such a large margin that other people start to lose interest in coming back.
I would say instead of dropping from tourneys, actively try to teach the other players how you keep beating them, and why its working. That way everyone wins. You get more challenging and exciting matchups, and they aren't guaranteed to lose to you all the time.
Go... have fun.... if someone accuses you of cheating, make them prove it..
If the players are gonna complain, then they probably need to game more and improve.. aside from that griping because they lose makes them petty.
Go and enjoy the games and don't worry about the what ifs.... if they happen.. deal with it but don't let it ruin your fun before you even get there.
Hello! You Play to Win the Game! It's the the other guys job to stop you, it's not your job to make the game unfair by not playing to win. Think of it this way, if you're going in to throw the games, you give an advantage to everyone you're matched up against, and are giving a disadvantage to everyone who isn't matched up with you.
Got a situation that I want your input on. So, a local store has been holding bi-weekly tournaments for X-Wing, with prize support. All tournaments are stand-alone, and there are no cumulative prizes for winning more than one tournament. Aside from the bi-weekly tournaments, there are also weekly casual play events on another day.Recently, I won a resounding victory in a bi-weekly tournament. I think playing in a tournament is quite fun, and I am pretty good at making good builds and playing the game. I wasn't even running any cheesy builds (e.g. 3x Phantom or 2x Falcon); I was just running a standard Rebel build. There is another bi-weekly tournament coming up. I want to participate in that one, but I have some concerns. As I have already won the previous one in resounding fashion, there is a good likelihood that I might win the next tournament as well. However, I don't know how other players and the store will take that.Other players might get jealous and start accusing me of cheating, etc. (even though I always play fairly), or otherwise start acting hostile towards me. Further, the store owner might decide that having the same person always win her store's tournaments is bad for business and might act accordingly. (To be sure, I did once quit another game where all the local tournaments were dominated by a couple guys because I didn't see the point of going to a tournament where I am guaranteed to lose miserably. I think that at least some other players might feel the same way as I did.)I suppose I could go and "give chance." However, since there is an entry fee and I also have other things that I could be doing, I don't want to go to a tournament and just lose games (or throw games, which is worse).I was thinking of going every other tournament, so that way, other players would win the tournament on the weeks when I am not going. However, this limits me to only half the tournaments. Of course, I could go to the casual nights instead, but that may or may not work depending on the date.So (and also TLDR), I want to ask you: Is there any issue with always being the winner? What should I do in this situation?
Never go back to this crap store.

Exactly, which is why I don't want to throw games. Another reason is that it feels dumb (to me anyways) to intentionally lose.
Cut out for brevity, see supra.
Never go back to this crap store.
Nothing has happened yet. I'm just being proactive, trying to stave off problems before they arise. Believe me, my job is already stressful enough. Don't need a controversy to arise at my gaming place.
I say .. unless it happens, don't worry about it.. this will just give you an ulcer... go have fun and if anyone gives you guff.. then address it..
If those are the things that you feel actually may happen you might want to be proactive in looking at other venues. Those are pretty out of left field concerns.
The main worry about winning too often is that you likely aren't getting better if your opposition isn't going to push you to do so.
Maybe fly some fun builds? Still try your best but do some wacky lists? Have fun.
The best thing I can suggest is to build squads with ships that you don't normally use or are typically labeled "not tournament viable".
the last time I did that it introduced me to several new tactics that I hadn't thought about before as well as appreciating those "unworthy ships" from a different angle.
I have a list I have been wanting to try out specifically for this purpose:
Jan Ors + Blaster Turret + RecSpec + Moldy Crow 35
Horton Salm + ICT + R7-T1 33
Tycho + PTL + SD 32
this list looks bad on paper (and to be honest, probably is bad!) but if you can build a list that isn't just straight up bad or loaded with ordinance to fill out points and actually do well with it, it can be more satisfying that suiting up super Chewy and his 3 bandit friends.
Winning is good and fun but winning with a new squad can be so much more rewarding.

Well then, just kind of pool shark the poor players...

I don't totally disagree with this, but I also....
I feel that a tourney is there to be fun.. and you also go to win the prize.. the brass ring isn't the only thing to shoot for, bit it is a major incentive.
If the store owner is gonna have issues with one person always winning then they need to stop giving out rewards..
I don't know.. just have mixed emotions about this.. if it had already happened I know I would think one way.. but since it hasn't this is all just worrying for possibly no real reason.. unless there is a precident for this feeling..

Might be time to try a Vader build. Seriously, though, I don't think Vader is as bad (gameplay wise) as people say he is.

Dont get me wrong I totally agree, however it also depends on how large the player base is in the area you live and how much you want to foster the long term growth of the game in your area as opposed to short term gain of winning all the tournaments.
The last thing you want to do is drive players away from events, and indeed the chance to better themselves, by crushing dreams and scooping the prize pool every time. I prefer to build the player base in my area and ensure everyone is enjoying themselves rather than playing ruthlessly efficient lists and tabling my opponents in every game.
Remember, Fly Casual.
Edited by Mace Windu^ Yes, that is a concern - driving players away from events, unintentionally to be sure, but driving them away nonetheless. As I stated, I too have once quit another game because the local tournament scene was dominated by two players and was no longer fun.
And, there was once a guy who I played chess with. After reading a couple books, I was able to beat him at least 9 times out of 10. The guy quit chess shortly thereafter, even though I offered to help him learn what I learned.
Edited by gundamvAlso interested to hear if any of you have encountered any problems as a result of winning too often.
Lol.. I lose way more than I win.. but I have some great moments in every game that contribute to my enjoyment of this awesome game..
Even though I lose, I have lots of fun.. and that is what, to me, is the most important thing.
If your going for the enjoyment of playing, and you feel you are winning too much (no such concept in Merica) then talk to the store owner/TO about your concerns..
Play the tourney as a ghost...where your final results don't count. Everyone gets bumped up 1 place as far as prize support (which may be a large part of the problem...no one wants to pay good cash just to watch the Ace Player walk away with it all the time).
Then start working with the play group. Hold clinics on the mechanics of the game. Work out 1 on 1 sessions with other players. Get them up to your level. At some point they will start beating you...then you can un-ghost and start raising the bar all over again.
Unless I missed it I have a couple questions.
1) Is there an entry fee, and if so how much?
2) Is the prize support only for the winner, or is it top2/4/8/whatever?
If the entry fee is fairly high, like $10 or more, and the prizes are only for first, or maybe only top two, and the same 1-2 people are always winning those prizes, then yea I'd come to the tourneys a lot less, and instead just play the casual days for cheaper (or free).
Play and help your local community play better. I always helped my opponent along such as taking actions when they forget or remind them of their abilities.
Too many bad attitudes in this post...
If you are destroying the competition, you will kill the game at the store and then have nobody to play with. Have fun, test various lists, teach others how to play. If you win, be mindful how you win.
Good luck...
