Space Stations, Debris Fields, Asteroids and other Battlefield BLING!

By bulldoguk, in X-Wing

Started work on a space station and some Debris fields for X-wing/Attack wing

Basic shape of the station has been fleshed out

Breaks down for easy storage

Also made up some parts to create Debris fields, Asteroids and Asteroid installations!

Debris and space junk

Asteroids of various sizes

Some little Asteroid bases, weapon platforms, etc and the mandatory SPACE SLUG!

Unfortunately I have a lot on over the next few weeks so work on the station and asteroids will have to go on the back boiler for a while...BAH!

Great minds think alike.

Nice work so far!

:)

Found a little time to assemble some debris fields, came out quite nice, just got to create a time machine so I can find the time to paint them now!

'Roids are removable to allow placement of ships

Some standard 'roids, I apologise for the lack of potatoes!

Some bases and facilities. I intend to link these using the walkways and magnets to create a network, I figure it would be fun to incorporate it into games and assign each section an ability, rather like huge ships

Space slug, careful he is hungry!

Those asteroid base pieces are familiar. A fan of EaW?

your ships are also really pretty

EaW?

I just made them up on the hoof while I was watching Angels and Demons the other night :)

Empire at War. Just noticed similarities.

ok.. that would be awesome to have on the table for an obstacle.. lol

All of this is AMAZING stuff. I can't wait to see what the asteroid outpost looks like when it's linked up and painted.

My only suggestion would be to make a bigger asteroid for the space slug to live in. He doesn't have the room to retreat back into the one he's currently riding around, and I'm imagining him floating around the galaxy like a giant hermit crab half-stuffed into his tiny 'roid, trying to find his lunch without the element of surprise on his side. "As long as I don't move they won't see me comin' " .

Then again, maybe he's PS 10.

The station looks great!! Now for the nerdy questions....

What's it made from? Card stock, plasticard?

How big is it?

Are you using reference pictures or doing it inspired by stations from the games?

Ahhhh, Empire at war, what a great game that was, although I didn't even realise they had those sort of bases, soon as I made it off the planet I usually got the crap kicked out of me! Hmmm, wonder if it will still work on my new system, still got the CDs somewhere!

Thought you actually meant the Bases they sat on but yeah, the bases, I downloaded a few pics for inspiration and thought they looked a little Starwarsy LOL

Stum, made from card, basic shape was thrown together in an evening. It was and will be(when I start detailing) one of those incredibly boing builds as everything needs to be repeated across the arms :/ I could only pull a couple of ref pics of the old game space station off the net but that suits me fine as I generally don't work from plans and make things up as I go along. I am an 'it'll do' sort of scratchbuilder :)

The size of the spans was actually dictated by the size of some off cuts it had laying around as I hate waste and didn't want to cut into a bigger sheet! As it happens turned out a nice size approx 60cm diameter, little ships look nice against it and the destroyers, Neb B and other huge ships should look the part 'docked'. Will certainly make for some interesting games!

I am attempting a station as well. I had grand designs of it being sturdy styrene(which I purchased 2 large sheets of for this) and lots of detail but I'm too lazy. I got some gray paint, black foamcore and some balsa wood strips for edging and sat down last night to craft some templates. It seriously took me like an hour+ to determine how to construct the base hexagon hub on paper. I had the walls(3 each of 2 different lengths but only 1 template of each needed) for it figured but couldn't visualize the together on paper to make a hexagon template for the roof of the lower part of the central hub. I actually had to run out and buy a protractor =/

Going to start on the bottom 1/2 of the station 1st. This will be the 3 flight decks and the hexagon hub they're attached to. Thinking this thing will be about 27" across so it'd tack up most of a standard play area.

What is that strange ship pursuing that x wing? It looks like it's from another galaxy something. Maybe far far away... A long time in the future, too...

Hi filter, I have a rainman like ability where I can simply look at something and re-create it in my mind and with the building material of my choice! I usually don't need any intermediate drawings or sketches, which I find saves a hell of a lot of time, the only time I use a ruler is to cut the odd straight line! However, it's not all good as on the flip side I am rubbish at ironing and still can't figure out how to work the washing machine...at least that's the cover story I am sticking with ;)

I need me some space junk.

I need me some space junk.

Yup...

I need me some space junk.

Yup...

We're not talking about the Lancer -class Frigate again here, are we?

Nah!

I just had a flash of inspiration while sat here on the toilet. For those of us who actually build and/or own the larger ships of the fleet wouldn't it be fun to scale up all the game templates, etc in armada and play in xwing scale!

I also bumped my head while in here and came up with this weird thing I am going to call the 'flux capacitor' :P

He draws you in with his cuteness :) I was actually thinking of having these little fellas as moving obstacles/hazards, randomly moving around the battlefield via fart propulsion :P

I already pulled that trick with STAW... dunno Bullies, it might be a bit much for me to do twice in one year...

Nicely done!

Oh I noticed that joe boss, how's it play with the larger ships? I was quite surprised at how cheap those eaglemoss ships were considering the quality, ****, stop talking myself into it!
