Shooting Outside Range

By NorrecV, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I can't seem to find this rule, but I was told you can shoot outside weapon range but suffer a setback. Does anyone have the page number on this? The 'Range' section describing all the weapon stats (Damage, HP, Encumbrance, etc) doesn't mention this.

I'd rather this wasn't the case, as it'd mean range has a lot less impact than I was thinking. If that's the way it is though, I'll adapt. I want to know what page it's on though so I don't get suckered.

I don't think so. Each range band increases difficulty, i.e., Medium is PP and Long is PPP. So if a carbine was shooting at Long, and they just had to roll against PPS, that would give better odds than a rifle at Long range.

As far as I can recall, the ONLY way to shoot outside of a weapon's listed range is to either:

--Modify the weapon (Marksman Barrel is the one that pops up first))

OR

--Have the talent (there's one or two that increase range bands; I'm away from my book at the moment)

Thanks guys, I thought it seemed fishy. It worked in that instance, so not a big deal, but I'll not allow it moving forward.

I think people were talking about shooting outside range in house rules. Nothing in CRB says anything about this being possible. Weapon range is the maximum where you can shoot, if I remember correctly

You need the Sniper Shot Talent via attachment or in a spec tree. It adds an upgrade to Difficulty for each band you add in excess of a given weapon's max range in addition to the increased Difficulty level for the range band itself.

In some games, "maximum range" is as far as the weapon can shoot, which I can respect.

In others, "maximum range" is as far as a normal person is ABLE to shoot. That isn't to say that a skilled marksman couldn't hit a mark at twice the distance, but an Average Joe most likely can't.

That said, it seems like FFG handled it by the aforementioned options, showing that it's not just the weapon's capability but also the shooter's, thus why you'd need a talent to do it.

If I were to even consider allowing shooting beyond a range band at my table, I'd upgrade the base difficulty for each range band at the very LEAST (i.e. shooting at Extreme range with a weapon that caps at Long would net one upgrade on top of the Extreme Range Difficulty). Not sure how "cleanly" it'll work, but it's the best approach that comes to mind.

Keep in mind I don't have my book to review the talents to see if this matches it or not, so don't take my word for it.

That's precisely how it's done, actually. The sniper shot talent on page 142 is the only non-modded way to increase the range of your attacks. The other way is to add a marksman barrel (pg190) to a blaster rifle, as others have stated.

So with two ranks in sniper shot, you can shoot at extreme range with a blaster pistol at the low difficulty of PP RR PPPP for the extreme range, and two upgrades for the two extra range bands—plus whatever else is going on (cover, concealment, defensive talents, etc). The same range with a marksman barrel'd blaster rifle would be a paltry PPPP for range alone.

Thank you both for pointing out the exact rule reference. I had a feeling I was citing a rule but things have been a bit of a mess lately so I've been losing track of what's what.
