Some Of My Bad Habits

By Jisforjets, in X-Wing

I often out myself in a position to win or lose on a dice roll. Most typically relying on a PS gambit, or he dice. This Phantom at range one with innitiave against his B wing on 3 hull left. Or a 4 hull mauler in range of of Han. Obviously not the slickest moves!

Another bad habit is taking a movement action to escape all but one arc. You give me a barrel roll... I will almost always take it. When do I suck it up and focus or evade vs moving out of dodge?

I like the high risk high reward plays, but lacking more ressillient builds or ships I find I am burning myself as often as not.

How do I break myself from this push the limit flying?

I can surmise from your post that you are an Imperial player. As a fellow fighter of terrorists, I can sympathize with you because I have been there. I tend to play conservative until I sense that I can get a kill, then I am very aggressive.

1) Quantity over quality. Imperial ships, with some notable exceptions, are fragile and die when subjected to stern looks or harsh language. Because of this I tend to take a lot of cheap ships so if one dies, it is no big deal. You killed my Academy Pilot. So what. I've got 4 more where he came from.

2) Take some time to learn the math. Sometimes those "I sense I can get a kill" moments aren't all they are cracked up to be. Take a second to do the odds in your head. If the odds of you getting the kill or doing significant damage are not in your favor (less than 50-50) and the move puts you out of position and in multiple firing arcs, don't do it. You may be being baited into a trap. Now if it is a ship trading situation and you are just losing a cheap ship and the opponent is losing an expensive ship, then it may be worth it.

3) Practice slow-playing and/or playing conservatively. I don't mean slow playing in the sense of taking forever to do your dials. I mean avoiding direct engagements and creeping forward. Make your opponent make the first move and commit. A frustrated opponent makes mistakes. Play some games with that mindset the whole time. That way you can go back to it when you need to.
