challenge to the theorist

By Thralket Frostbane, in X-Wing

TO ALL WHO READ THIS, PASS WORD TO THEORIST ON THIS BECAUSE IT IS A PART OF THE SAMURAI RIGHT.

Dear Theorist;

I have heard that you are this planets foremost expert on the piloting of squints.

I hope that is no surprise to you that I hope to one day have that title.

I do intend to focus on finding every way to make a squint work for me to the point that all of them are my *****, which I intend to lovingly fly as they are just so much ******* fun. In addition to being imperial through and through; they are my favorite ship in the lore next to the clutch, and favorite ship in the x-wing miniatures game mechanics. I still hope; and dare I say, plan to hone my skills, and one day take the title of foremost squint pilot from you.

anyone with a shred of wisdom will understand that, important to have dreams, and goals; it is.

even though I do fully intend to take your squint title from you some day... that day is far in the future. So for now, I am content to try my skills against you whenever I can; although it may a while off yet; so that I can learn from you... even though it would seem that I have parsecs, if not light years to go in the game. the challenge is nothing more than relish and motivation to me.

in the name that is all BUSHIDO!!

I want to take your title as worlds best squint pilot with honor.

please continue to be the best... for you are the inspiration of my goals... please do not let them falter!

With all the respect and honor of achievements;

Ashen blade, Sir. Thralket Frostbane, The Volcano's fist, and; Sword of the Hearthlands.

This, right here, is the moment the forum jumped the shark. Bookmark it, ladies and gentlemen.

That sure is a weird interceptor.

I think you're better off posting this challenge on Team Covenant. To my knowledge, Theorist doesn't post or even lurk much here. And good luck in your quest.

Also... this is Star Wars... bushido has little bearing on this and is rather out of place. As well, Samurai are not part of the Star Wars universe...

Good luck to you my friend, Theorist is a GREAT player! If this battle ever does happen, let us all know so we can watch it in all its glory!

Did I mention I am a fan of Theorist and I'll lay 3:1 odd on him?

Are you kiddinng? It's pretty well known that a new hope is just a decent remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.

Well known.. this is the first time I've ever heard of this comparison.. and I'll disagree...

So... no, I'm not kidding...

Seven samurai is about poor people recruiting men to defend their small village against bandits.. other than some minor possible similarities the movies, Star Wars is far from a remake of Seven Samurai..

And none of the main characters die... most of them do in Seven Samurai...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Nikk was kidding cause I really don't see what would make A New Hope a remake of Seven Samurai, or any other Star Wars movie. The Seven Samurai remake was the Magnificent Seven, and I never got to see it becasue well... Seven Samurai rule and I usually hate remake.

What? lucas was heavily inspired by samurai when it came to the jedi, hidden fortress massively influenced the first script this isn't exactly hidden lore its widely known.

I heard that the look of Vader was inspired by the samurai armor. Make sense:

May you find peace at the end...of his blade.

Good luck! Although as others have stated this might not be the best place to call him out.

I love me some interceptors too and fly em often but this is just ballsy. Vassal log it or film it for our enjoyment please!

Because remakes are so often faithful to their source material.

Would "adaptation" please your delicate sensibilities more?

So you weren't kidding?

What exactly are the similarities between the two because I really can't tell.

This.... this is what I know... Hiden Fortress is awesome, and where the idea of R2 and 3POs personalities came from.. the 2 guys always argueing.. its too funny watching them then watching R2 And 3PO

In my original statement I was addressing the claim of it being a Seven Samurai remake...

Star Wars connection to Bushido and samurai

1- light saber dueling was based on kendo and kejitsu, the swordsmanship school of the samurai. The light saber was based on the katana.

2 - Darth Vader's helmet is a samurai helmet.

3 - the word Jedi comes from the phrase "jidai gekki" which is Japanese for period drama, however it's usage meaning refers to Samurai movies.

4 - the force is based on eastern mysticism (or it was when it was still cool)

Items 1-3 are not my opinion they were stated by Lucas. Item 4 is just obvious.

As someone else mentioned upthread, Lucas was indeed heavily influenced by Kurosawa--but it was Hidden Fortress, not Seven Samurai.

I'm not having delicate sensibilities.. the two are no where near close.. really..

Peasants finding fighters to defend them...

A rebel force taking on the established government.

2 differing ideas..

edit: got ninja'ed quite a bit on this one, but since I did, I'll point out another (EU) Kurosawa connection. In the DARK TIMES comic arc, "Blue Harvest," they paid homage to the classic Hammett novel, "Red Harvest," but also to Kurosawa film that was inspired by it, YOJIMBO. (Of course, Blue Harvest was also a dummy name that Revenge of the Jedi was filmed under.)

I have a 50 spot on Theorist for the win. Any takers?

The rebellion is poor, and most of their command structure was small enough it could fit in one base (village) on yavin.

The imperials (bandits) outnumber and overwhelm the rebels and kill off a massive number of pilots (seriously, a significant number of pilots in our game are dead.)

Throw in the incredibly obvious sword fighting that occurs (however limited) and it's not hard to see that George Lucas basically combined the hero's journey with some decent samurai movies.

And bushido isn't really mentioned either..

Let's just say, I think the overly vealous OP'r took more liberty than I thought he should... and it seemed a bit childish as well..

No. Frankly I wish people would stop invoking his name; there's a very real possibility that it could conjure him up out of R'lyeh.
