Question about Gunner upgrade

By shaner, in X-Wing

Hey everyone.

I am wondering about the gunner. The card tells me that if I miss with one attack I can make a Prim Wpn attack. Now there has been suggestions that the gunner also provides a second attack if you choose. I can't find this in any of the books. Is this correct?

Thanks

The second attack is after you miss your first. Unless I'm missing something?

Yeah the gunner is your second attack but it only activates if you manage to roll blanks.

No, it only activates if the attack misses. You can roll 4 [kaboom]s and if the target gets 4 [evade]s gunner goes off and you get your second attack.

Yeah the gunner is your second attack but it only activates if you manage to roll blanks.

Which would make Gunner suck big time and you'd almost never hear about it much less see it paired with Han Solo.

Gunner triggers if there are no uncancelled [hit] or [crit] results after your opponent is done cancelling your attack dice. As Forgottenlore suggests even if you manage to roll all [crit] results on 4 attack dice if your opponent cancels all of them with [evade] results or Evade Tokens your attack actually MISSES despite having such a great roll.

Ahhh...that's neat then.

Hmmmm....5 points eh? That seems like a lot. Do you guys feel like it is worth it? If it gave you a second attack, then for sure....but a reroll?

What are the thoughts on this?

Edit...

Now that I think about it...the defender may have blown his tokens to fight off the primary attack. The reroll is likely to blast through.

Question. ..if you still have a focus or target lock, can you use them with the gunner attack?

Think of Gunner as "attack insurance" - it's worth it when you're fielding the big or expensive ships it can be used on, absolutely. The last thing you want when spending 40 points on a single ship is for it's solitary attack to be avoided. If you whiff your dice roll, or your opponent manages three evades, you get a second chance.

If you didn't use either your Focus or Target Lock for the first attack yes, you can use them now after Gunner activates. If you do not have a Target Lock on your opponent, and have Fire Control System as a System Upgrade, you can also use the Target Lock it generates here as well. Sure it's 7 points, but it gives you a chance to make a second attack with Target Lock, against an opponent that probably doesn't have any Focus and/or Evade tokens left. Kablam, indeed.

A single focus token or TL does not work for BOTH attacks however.

If you spend a focus on the first attack and it still misses, you need another focus token for the second attack. The token's effects do not carry over.

Just wanted to make that clear.

Gunner certainly can be "worth it" although determining exactly where that is can sometime be tricky. On a ship with a 1 die primary attack (HWK) I'll say the Gunner is never worth it. As the number of dice in your primary attack goes up funny things happen. With 2 dice you're more likely to miss which triggers Gunner but by that same margin your second attack may not be any more likely to hit. With 3 or 4 attack dice Gunner may not always trigger making it a waste but when it does you really want to make sure the ship hits with an attack. Similarly Gunner is best when shooting at hard to hit targets as they are more likely to cause a miss and if you can force them to spend tokens or single use abilities that's all the better.

Sometimes the "counter" to Gunner is to simply leave an uncancelled die result. There are ships you can do that with but when using Gunner you want to pay special attention to ships that just don't want to get hit at all. A prime example would be the PtL Fel who loads up with Evade and two Focus tokens while wearing a Stealth Device; this is a ship that doesn't want to get hit but a good first attack could strip away some of those tokens to cause the miss after which the Gunner just pounds the ship.

This.

I typically use Gunner on a Lambda with HLC: a 4-dice attack at any range (Range 2-3 HLC, range 1 primary with bonus die) that should hit with a TL or Focus (sometimes both) BUT in case it doesn't, bam, still got a 3 or 4-attack ready to go. It's expensive, but I've never regretted it. Now that I have some Phantoms, gonna throw a Tactician on my Lambda and go to town. "Oh? You dodged my range 2 attack? Here's a stress and another attack."

The Marksmanship EPT does, however, work on both attacks (see the FAQ), which is why you see it used occasionally alongside cards like Gunner and Corran Horn. Although, now that Predator exists, that probably won't be the case as often.

Some really awesome suggestions here. Many thanks.
