Favorite Side-Events?

By ShadowDragon, in UFS General Discussion

Like the topic says, I want to know what peoples' favorite side-events are (top 2 or top 3 favs preferably). I'm trying to plan side-events for a regional and I'd like to know =P

something I really want to try is Double Dragon. I've never done it before so it's something I'll mention as my favorite. 2nd would probably be highlander.

Legacy Format 6x10

Favs (in no actual order)
* Heavy/Light Weight
* Blue Bloods (only characters of a designated blood type may be played (ie. O, A, B, AB, or ?)
* The format (cant remember the name) where only common and Uncommons may be played (outside of the character)
* Ladies/Guys Night (though this isnt really that different from normal play)

Hates (in no order)
* Legacy
* Highlander
* Symbol Specific tournament (ie. the patch events)

I really like the idea of different format side events and its interesting to see the stuff people can come up with. A few ones I thought about tryiing are:

Anorexia Format (only characters who are 105 lbs or less may be played)

Midget Format *just sounds better then Short Format* (only characters 5' 3'' or less may be played)

Giant Format (Only characters 7' or taller may be played)

No identity Format(only characters with ? for their height, Weight, and Blood Type my be played)

Beast Out Format (only characters who are clearly not human may be played *ie. Saquatch, Lizardman, J. Talbain, ect)
or Supernatural Format (Only non-Human Characters may be played (Cat-people, animals, Vampires, Aliens, ect)

Going in Blind Format (all players hand in their deck at the start and the scout has them randomly pick from a box a deck to play at the start of each round) *We did this once and it was actually kind of cool.*

Just the Shirt on your Back Format (Only article of clothing/objects you wear Assets may be played *ie. Red, White, Orange and/or Yellow Gi, Leather Jacket, Yun's Cap, Skull Necklace, ect...*

I have like 20-30 side-formats written down somewhere so I'm set for those, but instead of making people vote on them at the event, I'd like to get them set ahead of time since many of the more popular ones require some preparation (Legacy, Highlander, 6x10, etc). Some events like Happy Hour/Hangover that don't need much prep at all they could vote on but still, I'd like to get a sense of what people here prefer to play in.

I think it's Common Grounds is the deck format with only commons and uncommons (minus character). I've always refered to it as the Peasant format.

I've played in a few of them. So far, the ones that have been the most interesting have been the Legacy Highlander stuff, as well as random special fun formats like the one we did for Halloween - only supernatural/nonhuman characters and people wearing masks were allowed xD

Best format ever is Double Dragon. OMG. It's insanely fun. Legacy two-on-two tag team style format? O, HELLZ YEAH.

Then again, as one half of the current DD champion team, mebbe I'm biased =D

GOD that was stupid. *Cody* + ***Talbain*** = you gonna lose.

The Absolute favourite local side event around here:

Hardcore 24/7 usually played over a con... it's like a 3 day UFS tournament.

We're running it at Keycon next weekend. the rules can be found here:

That sounds awesome Antigoth. Are rating just based on # of wins/draws (like normal tournaments)? So you're really given an advantage if you can finish lots of games really quickly... or is there a penalty for losing, other than pride and an opponent with improved standing?

There are usually prizes for:

1) Most games played. So if someone plays 50 or 60 games over the weekend, and looses them all, but has played more then everyone else, he gets a prize.
2) Most wins
Then there's some other random prize stuff that will go in - longest winning streak, longest loosing streak.

We try and make sure prizes make it out to as many people who participated as possible.

Part of the fun of the event is the stories that come out of it.

IE 2 Years ago, a challenge in a Hospital emergency room.
(Remember kids - alcohol poisoning is bad. I'll leave the story there... but the poor guy will never live it down. )

One thing that some of the Green Bay guys tried out a while ago was 150 Highlander, you have a 150 card legacy deck and can only include one copy of each card. We were working on a seperate banned list but it has been kind of pushed aside for now. It is a totally crazy fun format though and is just laughs.

FIRST BLOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's fun, fast and easy! I enjoy sealed events a lot. I'm always hyped about pre-releases because it's pretty much sealed. Also, would like to try doubl dragon. It sounds fun and I was telling our group about it but I guess we never got around to getting it through.

DAVID's THEME FORMAT

This format is where every card in the deck HAS to have a picture of the character you are playing with. I know it sounds crazy and not a lot of characters can't have this possibility due to lack of support, but it's the most fun I'd have to say. I think this format would be better if it was legacy included, but when we did it no one ran legacy stuff. Yes it was hard to make a THEME deck of a certain character but everyone managed to pull it off. FUN, FUN, FUN!!!!

Only 6 people have a couple favorite side-events? Really?? >_> Please help me out here...

Ah, is it basically 150 Highlander?

No its still 99 cards plus character and you have too follow resource restrictions as well.

Favorites?

1) Draft.

2) Legacy Highlander (60-card decks.)

3) The Theme format someone mentioned above.

4) Jigs & Reels (Players grab decks randomly or by choice from a pool of near-equal power-level decks. Mediocre or theme decks work best, though it could work with highlander, or almost anything. When a player wins a match they have to give up the deck. The losing player can take it, putting their deck back in the deck pool. If the losing player doesn't want the winning deck, the winning deck gets removed from tourney, and the losing player keeps their losing deck. The winner picks a new deck from the pool.)

5) Double Dragon.

6) Sealed.

7) Brawl.

There will be a couple side events going on (most likely after the cut to top 8), so far the 1st 2 are subject to change depending on what you guys want to do. If no one wants to participate in the 1st 2 I list then you can argue amongst yourselves to pick something else out and I'll run it.

1. Legacy- All that janky goodness, but bans and erratas still in effect. This will be free.

2. Set 12 only- Only the 2 latest sets allowed. We can do this one of two ways though, either a sealed or constructed, it's up to you. If you choose constructed, it will be free, and $18 if you guys want sealed (1 starter and 3 packs, or 6 packs depending on what we have in stock).

3. Hata's Challenge- Are you in need of a BRT? Do you think you're hot ****? Well, here's the deal, if you're the first one to beat James Hata (yes he will be there) twice (as in get 2 games on him) over the course of the weekend at Misty, you can have a BRT. There are a few conditions of course...
*You must use a block 3 deck, no banned cards (Hata will be following this as well)
*You can challenge him as many times over the weekend as you want
*If someone else is waiting to challenge him, you can't challenge him twice in a row (ie you gotta take turns)
*If you lose twice in a row, your wins reset to 0
*You must use the same deck, if you use a different deck you start a new challenge tally and your old one goes out the window

Good luck, and see you Saturday!

My absolute favorite is Tag-Team Play and then after that will have to be Gender-Bender (male character using only Female cards vice-versa) and then Theme setting.
