GenCon Gaming Question

By Spivy, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey folks. I live in the Indianapolis area and attended GenCon for a day a couple of years ago, but I quickly found that I'm pretty ignorant about how gaming sessions take place during the event. If I'm able to get the time to attend and by a pass, will there be any Star Wars EotE games that I'll be able to jump into? Or at this point is everything already pre-arranged and full?

Honestly, most of the games went up to register for months ago, and sold out pretty instantly. However, you do have two options here.

1.) Go to the FFG booth on the main floor. They are likely to be runnin demos (much shorter games, usually 30 minutes ish) of Edge, Age, and/or Force and Destiny. They did this last year, and I don't see why that would change. Granted, these sessions are generally just an introduction to the rules, but they are still great fun.

2.) Buy some generic tickets, and show up at 10 am and 2 pm at the FFG play area, and hope someone no-shows to a game they registered for. These are for the 4 hour game sessions with developers of the game. Still, the people who signed up for these at some point really really wanted to be there, so I wouldn't expect a ton of open slots. Still, if its your main reason for coming to the con, you can try it.

3.) I can't speak for the rest of the writers/devs, but I will be running some pick-up games during GenCon. They are likely to be last-minute affairs that I'll announce on my facebook page, but if you respond and get your butt to whatever hotel lobby I'm doing that in, you can get in a nice long gaming session that way. I'm sure I'll start a thread here for a day or two before GenCon.

Otherwise, bring or buy a CRB from the FFG store at the con, find an empty table, and get your game on!

I feel like some nerdy Cinderella type person. This is my first Gen Con and I lucked out in getting into a FFG hosted F&D game as well as another Star Wars game run by Mr. Kappal or Mr. Brooks (I won't know until I show up). Based on what others are saying I consider my self quite lucky.

Know what would be awesome? If someone would record a gaming session (or all of them for that matter) at Gencon and post them to youtube so everyone can see games GM'ed by Jay Little and other experienced GM's. I for one know that it would not hurt my GM'ing style to see them in action.

Not sure about rules at Gencon or if people playing would have to sign off so that they could be recorded and posted, but I know three things for sure.

1. I will never get to go to Gencon - My boss always takes vaction in August and tells me at I can take vacation any time except during August.

2. Watching experienced GM's (and people that designed/worked on the game) and players can only make others better at GM'ing & playing.

3. I would watch the videos more than once to glean as much as possible.

So I guess my Gencon gaming question is Will someone please record some of the games and post them so that I may view them?

Please & Thank you,

J

If someone has an interest in recording a pick-up game, I think I'll be running some either Friday or Saturday night. Obviously you'd learn a lot more from watching someone like Sam, Andy, Jay, or Sterling, as they probably have a tighter grasp over some of the more subtle nuances, but I'm more than happy to volunteer if they aren't.

I'm really excited to be going for the first time. I was really disappointed I didn't get into any of the FFG star wars games. I really hope I can find a pick up game so I can see how others run the game and to see their creativity.

Machine (and anyone else that got absolutely stonewalled trying to get into the official FFG games, and wants a chance). Follow the Order66 Podcast/Gamer Nation studios on twitter. If you don't have twitter, get it just for gencon. I'm going to probably run my pick-up games through them, and it'll be on a first come first serve sort of basis through twitter announcements by them. This will probably occur after dinner hours. Friday and/or Saturday look to be the days I'll be doing this for sure. Even if you don't get into the game, though, feel free to swing by and just hang out, wherever we are. (Probably GM Chris and GM Dave's hotel lobby).

Well I never listen to the order 66 podcast. But I may just have to smuggle a Com link with that twitter feed.

I'm going to have a pocketful of Star Wars Roleplay dice on me pretty much all the time... In between seminars, panels and playtests, I plan on running pickup games of EotE/AoR throughout the 'con.

One of the players I bought a ticket for a game is unable to go, and I probably won't need the generic tickets I would get if I returned the ticket to the system, so if anyone wants it, I'm just looking for the face value of the ticket, $6. We can meet at the Con at some point to do the deal, I will be there Wednesday to pick it up at Will Call, and likely to attend the dinner with d20 radio at Old Spaghetti Factory (if any spots are still open). Here is the info from the event's page:

Ooo one of the coveted Force and Destiny tickets. That's like a Willy Wonka golden ticket right there.

Yup! And it's at a prime time slot also!

And don't forget the drink vouchers :D:lol:

More than likely several of us from the RPG Academy will be running games on demand throughout the week. If you guys are interested in playing in one I'll put them out on twitter when they happen. Brad_Knipper@brad_knipper

See you guys at GenCon!
