Huge Ships suck (so far)

By Shaadea, in X-Wing

In my gaming group, people refuse to play against corvettes because they consider them overpowered...

Talk about perceptions....

There seem to be plenty of positive posts in this thread regarding huge ships. And it's been dead for more than six months.

It's not that easy to organize an Epic match, so I doubt that many players actually have that much experience with huge ships. Just like the smaller ships, there's a lot of depth to huge ship strategy and tactics, and no one should declare that they suck until they've played them several times and figured out what does and doesn't work.

Also, as I've pointed out in a more current thread, huge ships perform differently based on the point totals used for the match. When talking about smaller ships here, we tend to assume we're talking about their performance in 100 point standard games. But when we discuss huge ships, important information is often missing. 200 points? 300 points? 400 points? How many obstacles, and what types? How big was the play area? Was the game played until a time limit was reached, or until a huge was destroyed, or moved off the mat, or until one side was fully destroyed? 1v1 or teams? Mission or deathmatch? You'll get very different results based on the format you use.

So take this stuff with a grain of salt, assume the best instead of the worst, and try it for yourself.

Personally, I love the option to play with huge ships and have seen them perform very well (totally overpowering) and perform poorly (bad positioning and loadout), kind of like every ship in this game.

the best fix for epic is to make each side take an epic ship. so we need to wait for the raider to come out.

then neither side will have 9 interceptors shooting at it per turn.

you could also just get 2 free energy per turn in addition to your movement gains. I would shy away from negating all hits like the OP suggested, think it is too much of a knee jerk reaction, and would swing it too far the other direction.

Dagobah Dave is spot on...I own both epics and will be proffering a raider as soon as I can convince my wife. Go and get a few games in...all but one of mg epic games ended close and were nailbiters for a good part of the game...

Don't knock it till you have tried it.

I've posted negative thoughts about the corvette in the other thread. That was for vassal play, obeying all the rules of an epic tournament game though. 300 pts each side, 12 rocks placed in pairs, etc.

You have to understand the format can be abused in list building and that 6x shuttles with HLC are possible, but very few people in real life (in general) would buy and field that.

I'm still glad I own a tantive and can't wait to play it again, on the tabletop. And again with ion batteries!

I'm a vocal critic of the Tantive and its lack of energy, but I still own 2 of them. Despite the flaws, huge ships are a BLAST to play and I am sooo looking forward to the raider.

I am absolutely terrible at Star Wars: The Card Game. You have to use your units to damage their objectives, but those same units are used to take the Force, and it's difficult for some units to attack AND help with the Force struggle. AND THEN you find that your best units have the highest force count for Edge battles in your bid for initiative, so you may not want to play them at all so you can keep them in your hand for the initiative bid. And then my head just spins trying to balance it all.

I think Epic ships and the energy rules are more like this situation. You have to think carefully about how to use your limited resources, and for some people that's a whole lot of fun.

As for me, I have played maybe one tournament-style epic game (the rest have been scenarios), and I am willing to try and try again to get a handle on the management of energy resources because these models just look so cool!
