Dutch Vander's "Lock-on copy" ability clarification

By hammerghast, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello,

So with Dutch Vander "after acquiring a target lock" , you may then allow another ship ship in range 1-2 to do so for free. Its quite clearly worded that the recipient ship can target lock whoever they please.

However, I'm unclear whether, in order to keep handing off a target lock, even repeatedly to the same ship in instances such as when they spend it and Dutch still has his TL, does Dutch then have to spend his for no reason to then RE-acquire a lock, thus allowing him to copy it onto a friend? Or does "after acquiring a target lock" extend past the current turn, which makes the rule effectively "while dutch has a target lock, you may copy it" ?

Help appreciated, thanks!

You've got to acquire a target lock with Dutch in order to allow another ship to acquire one also. Merely having a lock in play from a previous turn does not allow you pass it on. Also, you cannot re-acquire a new lock on a ship if you've already got a lock on it, just to get Dutch's ability to kick in.

As for spending the lock for no reason - you can't. Use it during combat or acquire a new target.

Page 9 of the rulebook: "Target lock tokens are only removed if the locking ship either acquires a target lock on a different ship or spends the target lock during the Combat phase."

Dutch's ability can only be used at the time he acquires his own target lock, it cannot be held for later use.

Note also that according to the FAQ, Dutch cannot re-acquire a lock on the same ship in order to trigger his ability. He can, however, acquire a lock on a different ship, which will trigger his ability.

Also, with R5-K6, if he spends his lock during an attack (even if it is to roll 0 dice) he may attempt to re-acquire it by rolling a single defense die. If that roll is successful he will acquire a lock on the same ship, which will trigger his ability.

Note also that according to the FAQ, Dutch cannot re-acquire a lock on the same ship in order to trigger his ability.

It's not just Dutch that has this restriction.

Didn't consider R5-K6, very cool. Thanks.

Keep in mind that R5-K6 is an Action card, and his ability will only happen after spending a target lock, not just acquiring one.

R5-K6 is not an Action card. His ability is used whenever the ship he is on spends a Target Lock. It does not require an action to use.

Oops, my bad. I just double checked, and Jim is 100% correct. Not sure where I got the Action card from.
