Edge of the Empire: The Movie (or clearly, the best Star Wars movie in years!)

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Walked out? What the hell did he think he was going to get? There's been a talking Racoon, riding a talking tree in every trailer! What a tool. Some people want to be disappointed I think. It's cool if you genuinely don't like something. I understand that, but some fanboys have a habit of being over critical little pricks.

Maybe it strayed too far from the source material for him? It he went into the film without knowing anything about it an it wasn't his thing.

It was very close to the source material. I've read almost every Marvel cosmic comic since Annihilation, which is where this iteration of Guardians came from.

To your second point, if anyone can walk into a theater these days, not knowing a thing about the big summer movie with the millions of dollars of advertising behind it, my hat is off to them. Seriously, that individual has perfected personal media black outs. Good for him.

Yeah the biggest change I noticed was to character backstories. Gamora's got changed somewhat, and Peter Quill's a lot more but they weren't bad changes IMO, and it will be interesting to see how much Quill's has changed since one of the changes mentioned in the flim is only given a vague level detail, presumably with more to come in the sequel.

I haven't read other people's posts yet, I'll do that in a moment - but first I had to just say I've just seen this film and I haven't laughed so much in a cinema in ages.

THIS! FILM! IS! AWESOME!

Did everyone else catch Rocket Raccoon adjusting his crotch before the big final ship battle? Every guy knows that's what you'd actually do - you don't want discomfort distracting you when your life is on the line. But how many films actually show a racoon tugging his trousers around to rearrange things?

Also, I'm amazed how they manage to get away with such a staggering body count and still pull it off as a funny action film.

Also, Karen Gillan is great in her brief scenes and - are we allowed spoilers here? I'm figuring that we must be by this point but I'll wait until I've read the thread before I post things openly so:

I'm glad that she survived. Why kill a fun villain when you don't have to? Especially if they survive by cutting their own hand off! That's a tough villain.

Also, Drax was FAR more entertaining than I expected him to be. I thought he would be your basic dumb unstoppable tough guy - such a delicate touch he has with humour. He's great! I love the "green *****" line.

I'm going to read the thread now and see what other people have to say. I expect it to be full of people saying how awesome it was - back soon! :D

K.

EDIT: I just realized that one of my words above has been filtered by the censors here. It's an actual non-vulgar word. Adding in the asterisks makes it look like I've written something really rude! I haven't. It's a word for prostitute.

Okay - back. Not as much picking out of favourite moments as I expected. SO HERE ARE SOME OF MINE! :D :D

Also, I'm going to assume that if someone has read this deeply into a thread on a film everyone is talking about having seen they're not that spoiler-sensitive and sticking everything in collapsible boxes makes things hard to read and quote. So I'll edit this and put them in one if people really want, but otherwise:

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

I love how the Collector was seedy and creepy as they come, with his slave girls polishing everything and his almost perverse way of touching his possessions. He's like some sort of disgusting embodiment of the concept of covetousness. It's great when someone who isn't the villain of a film is still invested with such dark disturbing qualities. He was almost worse than Ronin when you actually watch him as a person.

The scene where Groot spears around eight enemies with a branch, bashes them REPEATEDLY against the walls was funny enough. And then you got THAT SMILE! The audience pretty much went to pieces at that moment.

Dance off. - All I need to say for this one.

Kevin Bacon - Again, all I need to say for this one. Actually, I also want to say I almost cried at "who put the sticks up their asses?" Okay, those two things are all I need to say.

Sexy green girls. Sexy blue girls. Sexy red girls. I can't help but think the director just said: "find me beautiful actresses. Then paint them every colour you can!" (And they are actually beautiful, not just Hollywood implant and liposuction beautiful, which makes a change).

Starlord kicking the little aliens near the start. And then forgetting about... what was her name?

Yando has a knife missile! Everyone who has ever read a Culture novel by Iain Banks needs to see this film just to see what a knife missile actually looks like. TERRIFYING!

Drunk Rocket is just heart-breaking.

Okay, I'm done - I just had to share some of my favourite parts. But really, it's all favourite parts. An AMAZING film. So much fun! :D

By the way - did you all catch the easter egg after the credits? Classic. :P

By the way - did you all catch the easter egg after the credits? Classic. :P

No! I only saw the first one with Drax cleaning his knife. There were more? I assumed once I'd seen that it had finished! How many were there? :_(

Howard the Duck mostly

I almost died with the "Nothing goes over my head! My reflexs are too fast, I will catch it!" I didn't think having Bautista working very well, but he ended up being about perfect for the part.

He was great! So softly spoken in places and with such a polite smile on occasion. I also love his inability to handle metaphor and his resentment at being called a thesaurus. :D

I saw the trailer for this ages ago. I know nothing about the comics it's based on or what the film would involve, but the trailer was so good I avoided all reviews and discussion about the film. Now I'm just catching up. I've just read the film reviews from a couple of newspapers (The Independent, primarily) and they pretty much panned it. But here's the thing - they appear to have been utterly blinded by their preconceptions. Two of them refer to Drax as (respectively) "a dumb brute" and "barely more articulate". They seem to have reacted with a stereotype of big dumb brute and completely blocked out the actual dialogue he comes out with! Inarticulate?!?? One of his schticks is his precision with terms and the way he talks. I love the "You show great spirit / You are an imbecile!" switch around. And the scene where he realizes how he's let his anger be a mask for his grief and what it's led him to... It stuns me the ability of some people to see what they expect to see rather than what is there. *rage*

Finally saw this movie earlier today. And loved it. I was cracking up almost as much as when watching the Iron Man movies. Heck, I'd love to see Tony and Peter get into a conversation; Peter's pop-culture references might be dated, but he's not the "nice guy" that Steve Rogers is.

I'll admit to not being really up-to-date on the current run of Guardians of the Galaxy, but I had no problems with the film, and found Drax to be a lot more enjoyable than I thought I would. I'll confess to not being the biggest fan of Zoe Soldana, but she did a really good job with the role of Gamora and averted my concerns of the character being reduced to nothing more than eye-candy. And of course Rocket, who was just frakkin' awesome.

I was sitting next to a group of teens, who looked at me funny when I cracked up at that particular tidbit. For me, it was well worth sitting through the credits for.

I hadn't even considered Tony Stark and Peter Quill matching wits. That would be a conversation you could roast marshmallows against.

My money is actually on Peter Quill because as well as the wit, he has a certain sort of genuineness about him that could cut through Stark's cynicism.

The end credit scene was crazy and I will not spoil it here. For long time comic readers it will be awesome. For non comic readers, well I have no idea what their reaction is going to be. I sat there with my hand over my open mouth for a few seconds before I could stand up and leave.

So I go through half of page one thinking there was an actual Edge of the Empire movie and I'm like.. OMG OMGMGOMGOMGOMG OOOHHHH EMMMMM GEEEEE!!!!!

Then I find out we're talking about Guardians of the Galaxy. Derp...

LOL

The vast majority of film critics 'review' movies the way that video game reviewers covered Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2.

ie. they don't bother watching it and make stuff up.

Peter's pop-culture references might be dated

I assumed the entire point of Peter is that he's forever stuck in 1984 :)

As for the film, I'm just gonna steal so much of it for my EoE game...

Time for name that spec for the characters I would think.....

Quill is Smuggler all the way; Scoundrel, with Thief and Pilot specs. He's arguably a better pin-up boy for the career than even Han Solo.

Gamora is Marauder with maybe some dips into Gadgeteer.

Drax is Hired Gun: Marauder and Heavy. Probably some Enforcer just for the Intimidation abilities.

Rocket is Gadgeteer/Pilot/Mechanic.

Groot's abilities seem to be about what he is, rather than what he knows.

I would have given Rocket Outlaw Tech/Gadgeteer... and Gamorra a combat-focused Assassin...

Peter Quill, I agree, as basically any of the Smuggler careers... most likely Scoundrel as the all-rounder.

Drax, definitely Marauder/Enforcer.

Groot? Well... Groot is Groot...

10 minutes to launch. We shall see what I think.......

I'm kind of hoping the next flim shows Gamora in more a tactician/strategist role. Either taking control of the team and coming up with a plan to save Quill from some mess he's stumbled into or perhaps rallying and leading some outside force to save the others from some disaster. I just pray they don't throw some Quill/Gamora/Outsider or Newcomer love triangle thing in.

LOL. I'm sorry you were fooled. I think the point is that GotG pretty much is EotE in spirit. Have you seen it, btw? I'd hate to spoil things for anyone by talking about plot points, but I'm thinking everyone in this thread is coming in after seeing it...

Have you seen it, btw?

Haley can't 'see' it, unfortunately :(

But I hope she can still go to the cinema and enjoy it. I think she'd enjoy it.

There was only one thing that I hated about this movie. That it reminded me that Warner bros. can't make an awesome Green Lantern live action movie. Guardians was on earth for what, 10 minutes? You can do a comic sci-fi movie in space. At least marvel can.

Hmmm...favorite moments?

Pelvic sorcery! Awesome!

Oh, I'm sorry Haley - I didn't realize. It has near continuous dialogue and the characters are all pretty distinct. A big part of why I liked it was the almost unending banter between the main characters. Other than a scene near the beginning where Starlord is dancing and kicking some aliens, I can't actually think of a scene where the characters aren't mouthing off in a constant stream and carrying the plot forward verbally. I hope that helps if you do go.

Not really sure how common it is but there are theaters within a reasonable distance from me with Descriptive Video support. Fortunately, GotG is available in one of them! My chauffer... I mean my brother and I(and the other players in our EotE game) are going this afternoon!

If you see a girl in an IIMAX theater wearing headphones instead of 3D glasses, say hi! Be nice to the three goons sitting with, though. They're the over-protective sort...

I saw it with my son yesterday. I went in thinking I was going to be blown away due to seeing lots of reviews and comments similar to the ones in this thread. Plus, as a child of the 80s myself it should have been right in my wheelhouse. But it really didn't hit me the same way. I'm not saying I disliked the movie; the problem is that it really made no strong impression on me one way or another.

Maybe the problem is that I'm not that familiar with this particular branch of the Marvel universe? I dunno. I do remember reading the Infinity Gauntlet series back in the day and I was excited to see Thanos. And I actually liked Ronan and Nebula in this as well.

One review I read said that it was like Star Wars but all the main characters were Han Solo. They meant it as a positive thing but I think it's actually a negative for me. Anyway I wanted to love it a lot more than I actually did. Maybe it will catch on after I see it again down the road. I hope this doesn't mean I am a cynical old man now -- I loved the Lego movie, that has to count for something!
