Edge of the Empire: The Movie (or clearly, the best Star Wars movie in years!)

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Wow. That's all I can say.

Who am I kiddding???

I LOVED this movie. I *hope* they make books... without pictures, I mean. I want to read and know so much more!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, I don't know if I'm cheating by writing this but my brother and I are seeing who can go the longest saying nothing but, "I am Groot."

BTW, my main motivation for going to the theater was just to see it now because I'm impatient. But, it was so worth it. The sound SO immersed me! The sound effects, the movie soundtrack, the old songs... I am Groot.

(and given how well this film's done in the opening weekend, a sequel is pretty much assured)

At the credit roll, it actually said the GotG would be back. That (and the box office) make me pretty confident that's all part of the plan.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it. It is, in my ever so humble opinion (ahem) a fantastic movie. And yeah, someone asked me how I was today and I just said to them: "I am groot". They just stared at me as if I were a madman. Hopefully they will go and see the movie and realize I am not.

But if they don't, well... I am Groot! :D

I would love a Guardians of the Galaxy novelization but it seems like the Marval movies don't get novelizations anymore. :(

This sucks.

By the way, that image with the lineup of Marvel movies is not true. It's a fake image somebody started circulating during Comicon.

Anyway, I loved it! It definitely has raised the stakes for a Star Wars movie. I loved the creativity in the vehicle combat sequences--Quill shoved his tug pod ship into the enemy fighter and used its claws to control the ship and shoot!

Rocket and Groot were fantastic! I admit to being a little disappointed by Karen Gillan as Nebula. She looked incredibly cool, but I don't feel like she had enough personality, or enough of a dramatic fight to be really memorable.

And how about Groot using "Last One Standing" when he skewered all those minions?

I was actually surprised that the heroes got through the end of the film with the Infinity Stone, because so many of the latest Marvel movies have been about Thanos getting his hands on those!

I'm definitely seeing this again in a theater.

And how about Groot using "Last One Standing" when he skewered all those minions?

I was thinking Michael Rooker and his Magic Whistle Arrow against 15 goons, but yeah, I agree that Groot gets one too! And that happy look Groot gives afterwards - brilliant!

Movie aside, who is making a version of Quill's ship in their games?

I think Groot is some kind of doctor or medic/Marauder or brawler combo

Groot is a HG/Bodyguard.

Okay - I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that there's a superhero called the Black Panther, and that this has nothing to do with Hewey Newton et al. Because if I'm wrong, that's going to a very weird movie to fit into the series. Verrrrry weird.

Marvel Comics went very odd during the 60's, trying to latch on to all the various social changes sweeping America. And yeah, Black Panther was the king of an African country that was fabulously advanced and technologically sophisticated, as well as being a kind of social utopia... But hey, it was the 60's.

The first black superheroes were all about that. It took a while to have a black guy who was just a superhero who happened to be black (it might have even been the Falcon, I think).

I'd be happy to see a movie about Luke Cage where he was sent forward through time to 2014 but still thought it was 40 years previously. I'm always surprised they didn't make more of Captain America finding it difficult to adapt to to the new millenia, seeing as how he comes from a post-war America with very different social mores.

Groot is a HG/Bodyguard.

But most of what he does comes from what he is rather than what he's learned.

As someone pointed out, species is largely cosmetic in the FFG SW games. (Even D&D has racial feats, whereas in 'One Ring', your race determines everything, from your class, your powers, your background, even your magic items).

To actually represent a character like Groot, I think you'd need to have some kind of racial talent tree that covered all the stuff you could do if you were a walking tree.

some kind of racial talent tree

I see what you did there.

GotG best film of the year, well scripted great effects, and as someone else said hot girls in every colour. Too many best momemts to choose from....laters i'm off to see it again :D

Movie aside, who is making a version of Quill's ship in their games?

I loved the Ravanger ship designs, but I don't know how I'd stat the Miano and the like. Definitly Sil 4, speed woud be 3 or 4, handling either 0 or +1 (Quill is the only one seen doing major acrobatics with it, but he is an outstanding pilot.) 4 forward firing mass drivers of some sort, no shields that I could tell, but at least armor 4... I really need to see the movie agian to form a stat line, or just the scenes with the Miano and/or the Ravangers. I'm also intrested in the two Ravanger corrvettes/frigates used against the Dark Aster. Pity the only had one part in the battle and were never seen again.

Also, the latter image is now my background image. :)

At one point it started to get really obvious that every scene with the Nova Corps had an incredibly beautiful woman just standing in the background (holding a clipboard or something)!

Yep, that was the one, pretty much instantly ensured I wouldn't. Because given the general quality of movies, it's a good bet it would suck. Now that I've seen the film, reviewing that trailer confirms what a terrible trailer it is. I'm not interested in seeing a raccoon with a gun riding a tree for its own sake, in most movies that would be just a gag, and I'm not into gag "humour" (if that's what it passes for). Spewing the rap sheet and some security guy saying "what a bunch of a*holes" isn't exactly compelling dialogue and doesn't tell me why I should care.

Thankfully this thread existed and made me rethink going.

Well all I can say is that I'm completely thrown by your thinking that's a bad trailer. To me it captures the tone of the movie extraordinarily well. It also told me almost immediately that this film would NOT be like most other films - the way it makes obvious that the heroes are not being backed up by general Hollywood hero-freebies. (By which I mean the way heroes in such movies always get automatic cachet by others in-universe just because they're the heroes to us), that there was a significant degree of irreverence in and toward the characters, that it didn't take itself too seriously andif the trailer itself makes me laugh so much... I genuinely don't get why a racoon on a tree says cheap gag to me. I saw it and thought it looked great. It never occurred to me that it was going to be a throw away laugh - it seemed obvious from the police line-up that the racoon was going to be a main character. If the film had been some sort of Disney movie, then a talking racoon might have said: "comedy side-kick" to me, but in this there was nothing to suggest he would be to me.

Not writing so much to argue, it's just one of those cases where I genuinely cannot get where you're coming from. The trailer has the feel of the movie down pretty much perfectly, to me.

In fariness, I thought it was a terrible trailer too. All my buddies have seen the film and love it, but I've refrained simply because the trailer just looked stupid.

I'm going tomorrow night though with relatively high expectations.

By the way, Star Lord's ship the Milano was named after Who's The Boss star Alyssa Milano. :)

If you didn't get the Who's The Boss reference or didn't stay for The Stinger, here - this might help:

Progressions,

With Nebula, again she'll probably see more development in the sequel, especially now that the groundwork for the Guardians has been laid out.

As for Thanos, I know it's been a common fan theory since the stinger for Thor: Dark World, but there's actually no evidence that Thanos has any of the Infinity Stones at the moment.

Tesseract (Space Gem) = safe in Asgard's vault

Loki's Staff (Mind Gem) = Hydra has it

Aether (Reality Gem) = last seen with the Collector

The Orb (Power Gem) = safe with the Nova Corps

Soul and Time Gems have yet to show up, though I suspect they'll make an appearance well before Avengers 3, which is presumable when the Mad Titan will make his presence known to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I know the theory is based upon Loki finding "discreet" ways to send the various Infinity Stones off to Thanos based on where he ended up as of the end of Thor: Dark World, and maybe this is just my read of Loki, but he seems to be the type that's willing to thumb his nose at Thanos and his alleged revenge now that he's in a pretty secure position.

This would make Star Wars VII perfect.

It would make me cry.

Nevermind. Deleted my post.

Anyone have any idea what talent tree I could add "pelvic sorcery" to?

Would Rocket be a tactician?

Drax would be a marauder?

Groot a bodyguard?
