23 point xwing.

I have a list of x's with a flanker. And 23 points left. Should I:

Red squadron pilot. Ps 4, 23 points.

Tarn misson, ps 3 but ability, 23.

I suppose you could use a rookie with a 2 point upgrade.

Which should I choose (mainly between the first two options but in open.) and why?

I think Tarn's ability is well worth the 1 PS you lose.

Tarns ability is well worth the one lower PS. Definitely use him.

As others have pointed out, you're gaining much more with Tarn than you're losing. If you could somehow, squeeze another two points from somewhere for an R7, even better, but even without the astromech Tarn's probably the better option.

I don't think you can ask a squad question without someone telling you to put in something that is not released yet.

No, but I play around with proxies sometimes. Or I hear Vassal is neat.

But this particular gem has been around for a month at least, I remember reading about this nasty little dude right here on the forums...

Rookie pilot with R2 astromech. X-wing... Nuff said, and the R2 unit making all 1-2's greens. 22 points.

I saw 23 points in the title and all I could think was Tarn Tarn Tarn. Tarn with R7 gets even better. He is low pilot skill, but has one of the most incredible action economy abilities. In a one on one, he gets a major boost above his normal value. Sometimes you don't even want to shoot him. Great core for a list if you are looking to flank with someone else.

Rookie w/ R3-A2 is also a decent flank piece at 23pts. Properly executed he'll come in from the side, allowing him to use the 1 bank to destress and follow his initial target.

Rookie with Flechette Torpedoes. 23 points and you get a nice little long range attack that, timed right, can really help keep an opposing ship out of the game for a turn. Especially useful in jousting situations.

PTL is mandatory on Greens.

PTL/Predator OR outmaneuver is the correct build for that fighter above.

Played Pred/PTL on them on vassal and it is indeed potent. PTL remains king of the upgrades.

....and I would take this A-Wing over any of the X-Wing choices anyday. Fly it like an Imperial Squint and they wont let you down.

Although Rebel Aces can make it much better a PtL Green can still make your annoying flanker.

I already have one flanker. I'm not sure about 2 flankers when the center is only a b and a z.

Tarn is a great choice, but so is Cracken.

This is so true. I've also seen this a number of times, and usually when the OP asks for help with a list, it's for a tournament coming up in the next week or so. Try and offer advice that might actually be useful guys.

PS: Popn618, go with Tarn. Don't worry about his low PS, it'll give you plenty of opportunities for the opponent to attack you and bring his ability into play.

Ok, now you have 23 points left but "What does the rest of the squadron look like?"

I say that because you've already mentioned having a flanker as a response to any A-Wing suggestions. While I don't think anyone would really argue against Tarn instead of a Red it may be there are better options available although those could depend on what you have to use. I mean some version of Blount or Cracken could be nice to have depending on what else you have.

Blount + Assault Missile + DtF (or Deadeye if you like) would give you a splash attack to help deal with certain issues and DtF could be used to pull crits off of more damaging ships. If you ever run into Stealth Devices he's also nice to have.

Cracken + Hull Upgrade + 1 point upgrade (maybe VI?) could give you a ship with X-Wing like survivability that hands out actions to other nearly by allies.

Although you may be giving up 3 primary attack dice there are a lot of other ways to fill 23 points in a Rebel build.

Vassal community is pretty big and has a good presence on these boards...and is playing with all the Rebel Aces Cards.

Maybe he isnt playing in an actual tournament OR on Vassal, I do believe peeps will sub in Rebel Aces rules in casual games all day long. So basically, it makes MORE sense to suggest Rebel Aces since the ONLY games they aren't used in would be actual Tourney games.

Unless the OP states that he wants suggestions based on currently legal tournament cards (he didnt) suggestions including said cards are just as valid as anything else.

Complaining about those suggestions is more off topic than the suggestions about Rebel Aces themselves.
