Has anyone else found that Vassal (generally) plays significantly differently to normal games/tourneys?
Hard to put my finger on what it is (maybe better quality opponents on vassal?) but games and general moves seem a lot more orchestrated and predictable on Vassal.
My guess is that it has something to do with the birds eye 2D overview that let's you see the board differently than your 45 degree real life standing over the table.. That combined with the ability to accurately predict/see ship placement distances vs asteroids and opponents ect.
Another thing I have found odd is that when I play a lot of Vassal my normal game suffers for the first few games until I get my head back into the movement templates.
Vassal has definitely improved my overall game due to quality opponents, exposure to various builds, tactics and formations but it feels strange switching back and forth.
Vassal
I just recently started playing Vassal and I can say YES. it plays very different and takes a bit to get use to the spatial awareness from person to screen.
I find myself missing the accuracy of the Vassal movements and the complete lack of accidentally bumping a ship out of place when I play on a TT.
It's definitely a different experience, not better or worse, and close enough to the real thing be a god send for those of us who don't have a strong local showing of X-wing.

Agreed on it being very handy for getting more games in than life would otherwise permit!
One thing I do really like about Vassal is the ability to practice asteroid placement, intial formaition and setup for the all important turns 1-4. I know you can do this on your kitchen table but it's much quicker, easier and cleaner on Vassal.
