What exactly does FFG Star Wars License Cover?

By MooseMCA, in X-Wing

-Obviously the Original Trilogy

-Expanded Universe (ie Legends) books, comics, and some games

-Prequel Trilogy? (I saw a picture of Anakin's Jedi Interceptor in the Age of Rebellion RPG book)

-Sequel Trilogy and Spinoffs?

-Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons?

Just curious. Cheers!

It would be safe to say that it covers all of Star Wars.

We have no way to know what the specific terms are. It is likely that it covers all eras, but we really don't know. I do think I remember seeing a picture of HK-47 from Knights of the Old Republic in a FFG product, somewhere.

We do know that the sculpts for x-wing miniatures require approval from Lucasfilm.

And, of course, whatever it says now, the entire license may change when it is time to renew it because of Disney.

Anyone that claims they have any idea is full of it.

The only thing we know is that it doesn't cover board games.

What a shame. I'd love to see a Star Wars-themed board game made by FFG!

Someone on the uk page mailed them and put a screen shot of the reply..

they can do what they want basically all encompassing license, to do with star wars

if i could find the pic i will upload it

Yeah, what coolfishboy said. Someone on the X-Wing UK Facebook page sent them an e-mail and the response was a simple "We have an all encompassing licence."

I think it's safe to say FFG will keep the licence. They own Flightpath, meaning Disney can't hand over X-wing to a second-rate company. If they want to keep the X-wing money spinner they'll have to keep working together, which I'm pretty sure they're both happy to.

Yes, for miniatures, roleplaying and card games only though. I believe Hasbro have the right to board games... which is a shame, as all they seem to produce are things like themed versions of other games (like Risk, monopoly etc), while I am sure FFG would be able to make something which would try and evoke the feeling of Star Wars a whole lot better.

I think the reason why we have pretty much exclusively seen original films stuff (with some EU stuff sneaking in, but mostly from the same era) is because 1) I think it is the most iconic for most people that will buy these things 2) I get a sneaking suspicion is the FFG staff's favourite "era" and 3) any post original trilogy stuff is a bit up in the air at the moment with the new films coming out. I think the only "New Republic" era thing that has featured so far is the E-Wing, and I have a sneaking suspicion that may in part be because they have run out of Rebel fighters to do (while the Imperials still had several dumb TIE variants to work with).

If the game continues long enough with new releases I suspect we will see stuff to tie in with the new films and/or stuff from the prequel films. However, they are still not going to be as iconic as the original trilogy ships.

According to some news that came out earlier this year Disney has limited all the companies making star wars stuff to the original trilogy era and eventually the new trilogy era. The clone wars is off limits now. There was an implied cut off date, anything from the other eras the companies was working on up to that point they could continue to produce and release but after that they have to switch over or lose the star wars license.

Hasbro especially got the short end of the stick with this as they had a lot of clone wars era stuff lined up and had to cancel and even remove some product because of it. Disney wants no distractions from the new movies, there is a big original trilogy push starting this year leading up to the new movies.

All that taken into consideration I doubt with X-Wing we will see anything that isn't from the movies, rebels cartoon or post Endor EU. FFG obviously has a different contract with Disney than the other companies, they can still make stuff (E-wing for example) from the post Endor era. Hasbro, Gentle Giant, Sideshow and others were told specifically no more EU or Clone Wars, PT era items. I would expect to see FFG pulling more ship designs from the X-Wing and TIE Fighter PC games, Star Wars Galaxies and even the RTS games that came out (Rebellion and Empire at War/Forces of Corruption).

There are a couple other small companies making some stuff that is from the post Endor era as well, but supposedly there is a cut off point there as well. I've heard some people say they were told it ends with the first Thrawn trilogy books or 8 to 10 years after Endor. But I've never seen anything concrete to confirm that, it's just been people saying they talked to so and so at a convention or something.
