Capital Ship game?

By ArcaneSpringbrd, in X-Wing

Count me in. I loved BFG and always wanted something similar to it in the SW universe. It could run on the same Attack Wing 'engine', but would need to be cleaner, WizKids were so close with the Trek game.

I am ready to donate plasma or other bodily fluids if necessary to fund my purchases.

Well guys, we'll find out soon enough in 2 weeks won't we;)

I'll say this though, if they release a Star Wars fleet armada game this Rebel scum will gladly switch sides to serve the Empire:)

The manouvre templates used for huge ships - with slower turns, 'fish-tailing' etc, etc. make more sense for capital ships, as does the 'energy' shennanigans.

Would love to see a cap-ship game, though

Having played Battlefleet Gothic for a bit, I can safely say fleet combat is damned good fun. I think if FFG decide to go down this avenue, it would be good for them. There's been many threads asking for a fleet game, and I don't think it would drag players away from X-Wing.

Star Destroyer - Miniatures game...sounds cool. Count me in :-)

Wow. They ripped X-wing so hard. You'd think even with permission to use Flightpath they'd have made at least a little effort to make it different. Hell, they've even got identical dice...

Indeed. BFG was another game which got the 'feel' of capital ship combat right.

Scale would be important - I wouldn't mind basic game pieces being Falcon size plus, because if you do a star wars capital ship game, I'm sorry, but the basic set has to have a star destroyer in it.

It IS the star wars capital ship, in the same way the X-wing or TIE fighter are the iconic fighters.

Yup. I think there was a 'muahaha' type cackling because of the whole dial mechanic shennanigans. The whole thing felt kind of 'thrown together' at short notice - the bits feel more tacky and the models were literally the heroclix pre-paints (which are awful).

I would love to see a cap ship game for Star Wars.

For fighter squadrons, I like the idea of multiple small models on a small base, similar to how Attack Wing does it.

That'ed be how to do it. Unlike most of the STAW Models these are **** nice. After the Wizzers saw that STAW made some decent profit they have actually started to have all new models made that look good. These little fighters for example are fine and brand new to the range.

I just watched the space battle scenes of the Battle of Endor last night. The capital ships just flew along, slowly, past each other going to broadsides. The excitement came from the snub fighters whizzing past and through the capital ships (or into them in Arvel's case...)

If they can capture that combination of massive lumbering Star Destroyers and Mon Cal cruisers, along with the high speed chases of the fighters, I'd be all for it.

But yeah, after X-Wing is tucked into bed for a bit. No possible way I could afford to do both at once.

What have attack wing done that makes it more capital shippy?

Not a **** thing... except say that all of the ships are the big ships from Star Trek.

One thing I think they did right was reliance on crew/equipment to make ships more effective.

It's pretty common to see 120-point games with two ships on each side with three crewmembers, two secondary weapons, and an upgrade each. Gives a good feeling that there are large crews on the ships that give them multiple options.

Can ships in attack wing fire multiple weapons a turn? Do they have differing fire arcs?

If so, how exactly do they handle it?

One of the problems I keep seeing with the idea of a flight path capital ship game is that big ships should be able to fire several different weapons each turn and in many different directions at different targets.

They could develop a different system easily enough.

No my man, it works like X-Wing.

BFG was a f***ing amazing game. Ah, those were the days...back when GW could actually write decent rules and their squad boxes *only* cost $20 or so...

If you want a strategic capital ship game, go get the old Rebellion or Empire at War games.
