Curran Horn Question

By shaner, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi folks,

There is a disagreement in my group concerning Corrans pilot skill. When you begin the end phase and you can make his extra one attack, does he roll one extra attack die or all three normal attack dice?

I assumed all normal allowed attack dice seeing as he loses his attack in the next round. Some folks felt that this was way too powerful and that he must only get one extra die.

Any help would be appreciated.

Corran Horn's End Phase attack is a normal attack in all regards, including available weapons, available tokens/active Elite Pilot Talents, range modifications, defender special abilities, etc. Note that it happens at the beginning of the End Phase, before the "clean up" bits (so if the defender has a left over focus/evade token, he could still use it against Corran's attack).

You resolve it as a normal attack before any focus/evade tokens are cleared (if there are any leftover), so all his attack die plus applicable range modifiers.

Thanks. That's official then? Have to be sure...I'm being challenged by much more experienced players.

Yes that is official, it says to make another attack, and an attack is defined in the rule book very clearly. You choose a target and roll all applicable attack dice, and the defender defends as normal. Do your friends think they don't get to defend it or something? I don't get how they think it is too powerful...

Shaner, remember: if Corran attacks in the End Phase (and that is an if: he's not required to do so every turn), he CANNOT attack in the following round. That's the trade-off. Do I attack now, and sacrifice an attack next round, or do I save it for a potentially better shot next round?

Awesome. Thanks for all the help.

This forum will be a great tool for learning and making legal and viable lists.

You want to try something fun? If your opponent likes flying large ships, take Fire-Control System on Corran and Marksmanship...it'll give him a Target Lock he can use during the End Phase, and Marksmanship counts as an offensive Focus for both of his attacks...you can leave off the FCS if there's no large ships, as you'll be less likely to need it, but I rarely take Corran without Marksmanship, or some way for him to get more than one focus token.

I'm a little surprised that these "much more experienced" players have a problem with this. Corran's card is pretty clear. There's no mention of a 1-die attack. Where did they get that idea? It's a full attack - all 7 steps. And yes, it is powerful as it will give him two full attacks in the same round, but nothing in the following. It can make him pretty devastating and also pretty vulnerable if you don't do it right.

Just because someone has been playing a game for a long time, it doesn't mean they've necessarily been playing it correctly. There's the chance they've just been wrong for an awful long time.

Keep a copy of the latest FAQ printed or on your mobile device. It's a big help in clearing things up! You can find it here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=174&esem=4

Thanks. You folks have been a great help. Now I need to learn how to make good competitive lists. There must already be a thread for it...so the search begins!

Yep, so very true. A mate of mine has been playing for over a year and thought he was the top gun, but has never bothered with looking at any of the FAQs, ever. Got a bit of a surprise when I cleared up a few of his ongoing errors. I'm not saying I'm the most knowledgeable player in the world, but you can sure learn a lot from reading the FAQs and the threads here.

And, Shaner, if you're looking for list ideas, there's usually a dozen or more that pop up here every day. :)
